CSTRR:

Four of my former classmates in Nigeria are currently Graduate Teaching Assistants in America as a condition for their full tuition scholarship.

They did PhD right after their B.Eng in Nigeria, and are on track to become fully employed by their universities when they are done with their doctorates.

Absolutely brilliant fellows that Nigeria does not have enough of.

Teaching assistants you just said.

Come on now, that's entry point for lecturing.

Your mates must be young - easily under30.

They have made at least 2:1, written GRE/GMAT no less, and they have been given a position a faculty based on the kind of endowments said faculty receives.

Majority of the rest of the lecturers would not be given such opportunities.

Know this and know peace.

They aren't in Nigeria out of patriotism.

They are because nothing else would work for them.

Maybe when they go abroad they'll be able to strike for 6 months and get paid whilst doing so.
You think you are smart by half

You know the institutions abroad works better and that is part of what ASUU is asking for the institutions here too be funded to compete with the saner limes

I'm smart enough to recognise the lecturers are not employable in the western world and are simply bluffing.

Lecturer in physics wey never near lab in 10 years thinks he can bluff his way into University of Iowa or University of Manchester.

What a joke.

And to make it worse, different countries are opening skilled talent Visa initiatives.

France, UK, Australia, Newzealand, Canada, and now recently Germany which will start theirs in December.

This is the knowledge century.
Nations without skill will suffer.

Nigerian banks are already crying due to mass emmigration of senior developers abroad.

And you can't just employ any Jack and Jill that just started coding to handle critical backend infastructure or handle load balancing.

If the Nigerian students they trained are taking up jobs in North American academia and industry, it is the lecturers that cannot see jobs?

Many of the lecturers that most likely did their postgraduates abroad.?

You are joking.

They should leave, ASUU should stop using this to blackmail anybody.
As if increase in Salaries will stop them leaving. Those of them still here are those not capable of leaving, not accepted abroad or those earning a lot more here.
Exporting talents is part of our business , and it must continue unless Nigeria becomes developed country, which will not happen soon.
People are always waiting to step in where others left.
Where in the world would these. Lecturers insist on full salaries after voluntary staying off work for 7 months?
They won't leave. If you are dusting your CV to replace the outgoing lecturers, look for somewhere else, you will see no vacancies.
Are they not part of the rot? They want to export their bad manners abroad?

With all your education, you don't know the meaning of "skills shortage?"

When Man Utd replaced defenders like Jaap Stam, Gabriele Heinze, Gary Neville, Denis Irwin, Jesper Blomqvist and Patrice Evra with the likes of Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Darmian and Luke Shaw, has the quality of the team been the same, even though technically, one footballer replaced another in those positions?

Can you compare the skills being turned out in Nigerian universities with the equivalents being turned out abroad? Are the skills qualities the same?

What is skills shortage? You don't know the meaning mister!

I think it is better for them to try another Country and understand that their attitude to lecturing job is not acceptable in another Country. Just that it is painful but most of us knows that many of our lecturers are lazy and not committed. Commitment is not about how much you are paid But for the Passion for the job you are doing. I have said my own. you are free to your understanding of what i said.

If u sent away ur most senior lecturers and professor, there won't be knowledge transfer and mentorship....u People will be teaching rubbish ...Imagine professors with highest research and publication all left....who will train the PhD? U Agbado people no geh sense walai....
.
For practical technical courses that required experienced tutors to teach advance concepts, who will train the students,? who will handle practicals procedures?
E.g Most of Nigerian medical consultant are leaving, my uncle is one, if experienced consultant and specialist leaves, Believe u me, ur next generation of medical consultant will be trained by half baked doctors, they won't be competent and that's disaster to medical field and more death to u people....that's the problem with knowledge transfer that will ensue...and all sector will suffer in Naija at this rate
leave all these boring rhetorics. Specialist and experts didnt start leaving the country in 2022. It has been happening since 60s,70s,80s,and 90s.

Whoever leave will be replaced. there re a lot of PhD holders that will gladly replace them without making too much noise

Education is not valued in NIGERIA so you dont expect the teachers to be well paid. Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland they pay teachers and lecturers higher because they know the value of education. When you have a president that didnt go to school ruling over professors what do you expect to happen? When you have elites, intelligent students who have been on strike for 7mnts , professors and lecturers not paid YET shouting EMILOKAN. Then you know there's a BIG PROBLEM.

The truth is that NIGERIA is sitting on a time bomb but we dont know the timing, however it's still gonna explode unless we get someone to disarm all of its modules before its countdown timer expires. WHO IS THIS MESSIAH?

Government should face reality and be sincere with Nigeria and Nigerians.

Higher education is not free anywhere in the world. Basic education, primary and secondary education are free but higher education can never be free. Not even in the so called advanced countries.

Government should allow universities to run themselves,

admit students on their merit,

scrap jamb,

pay their lecturers,

charge school fees,

bring back the students loan board,

institutions should grant scholarship to indigents students,

govt should hands off appointment of VC,

free hands to VC to run their schools,

university education is not for everybody,

who cares about university education abroad.

lecturers should stop selling hands out of 10 yrs back to students.

sex for mark is dismissal.

This is how to stop senseless strike and crisis in our institution of higher learning.

Harvard university, Oxford university etc are private and privately run.

Government running university is a scam and stealing of resources.
