This is the best thing that could have happened to him. He should leave the club and try to make it elsewhere.

The only issue is if ETH had sent him on loan last season we probably might have gotten up to 5m or even more for him. Instead he just kept him on the bench for months.

Remember I said that those youth players will cannibalise one another. There are just too many of them playing similar or the same positions.

If one accepts that Mainoo and Mejbri both have more natural talent than Iqbal then there isn’t just enough team slots for them to develop.

Charlie Savage will also be offloaded. Mainoo will remain. Mejbri is the one that is uncertain for now. He too is getting to make or mar time.

Next season Gore and Hansen-Aaroen will be on the clock. Probably a loan and then by 2024 decision time will be close.

I'm certain Hansen will remain, that boy is a killa

Is Mejbri and Mainoo truly better than Iqbal? I thought Iqbal was highly rated in the youth team?

Still one of Portugal's best players yesterday, the fact that he didn't score or assist won't change that.

Iqbal missed his 1st scholarship year (age 16-17) due to injury so i didn't see him play. His 2nd scholarship year (17-18) was quite good but Mejbri who was clearly better was playing Under-21 while Zidane was playing Under-18, though one can understand that Iqbal was just recovering from a full year out with injury. Plus Iqbal was still quite small then. He got bigger over time though and 2 seasons ago he and Mejbri were about the same level and then this last pre-season he had a better pre-season. Mejbri has been the more dominant player in the academy overall.

Maino's case is different. He is 2 years younger than Iqbal and has looked better than him most of the time they have played together. When i first saw Mainoo he was playing AM for the Under-18s and didn't look too impressive until i found out he was only 15 and was not meant to play there yet. The next season when he was 16 he was dominating the Under-18s as a CM and when he was 17 last year he was dominating his individual matchups against 21yr olds.

Iqbal has probably been the more aesthetically pleasing to watch but in terms of dominance in the academy Mejbri and Mainoo have been it. At Under-18 level the only way opponents could stop Mejbri was to slide tackle him. Same in his first Under-21 season. It would be interesting to see what happens with Mainoo and Mejbri. If they also fail to make it here we should probably close the academy and build a shopping center over it.

Thanks for explaining better! But £1M for Iqbal is just too small. I feel like Ten Hag is desperate to raise the amount of money available for transfers and clubs will be looking to take advantage of this.

This deal will only make sense when I see what happens with Mejbri and Mainoo.

He has been rated since his ajax career. It was just that one year suspension for doping that made his news die down in the media somehow. If he was free like last season many clubs will have been rushing him now.

They weren't just all about getting chances and scoring goals. These dudes were intense.

That team should've won the treble also.

Same overhyped team with non-existent tactics that an average chelsea side took 2 extra-time?

Onana can be erratic. The wires in his brain get mixed up sometimes. A GK like Diogo Costa is a safer bet.

The only positive explanation is that ETH believes that Iqbal has potential but that it will be difficult to develop it at United with the limited slots in midfield. There is probably an informal agreement on guaranteed playing time at Utrecht. The sell-on clause also means that if he ever becomes a star there we will be in a prime position to either buy him back OR at least make some more money off it.

Utrecht being ETH's former club and ETH sharing agents with Iqbal makes me believe that there were some detailed discussions along the lines i just mentioned. Otherwise, we are back to the deal not making any sense. grin

It is very likely that Caicedo would not have developed the way he did at Brighton if we had bought him then. The same with Bellingham. Those players went to teams that could develop them and importantly give them game time. Also remember that even Brighton saw that Caicedo was not ready in the first season and loaned him out for game time.

A player like Amad for instance made a mistake joining us when he did. I would not advise any teenager to join us. Our scouting is not the best but even our player development is dreadful.

For example, our academy LB Alvaro Fernandez spent last season playing for a team that uses wingbacks. He did really well but what does that really tell us about his ability to play LB at senior level, and what does that teach him about the defensive solidity and positioning required as a LB. Mejbri spent the season playing for a Birmingham side with probably the lowest possession in the Championship, utilizing Sam Allardyce style kick and follow tactics. Apart from chasing after loose balls there was nothing else required from Birmingham midfielders. How does that develop him into a United level player.

Your argument is sound. The club needs to be restructured, no doubt about that.

Also hearing rumors this move was planned as far back as January this year.

Seems like ETH is poaching Zidane for himself. If he's still at United when Zidane blows, signing him back won't be hard. And if he's at another team, there won't be any difference.

The only way EtH won't benefit from Zidane is if Zidane flops. And you can bet they'll give him loads of support and game time at Utrecht.
