I also personally know a hairdresser who by chance was also my twin brother that dropped out of university in 2010 too that now has like 25 mansion and property worth billions of naira to his name. His oga then too is a billionaire in $ today.

The garrulous former Governor Ayo Fayose (as reported in a few newspapers such as the Sun and Vanguard at that time) was NOT speaking to all Yorubas in general to go and become an apprentices in Aba, but he was only giving a suggestion about how to get some vibrant Ekiti youths engaged in skills by sending them to Aba to learn how to make bags and shoes instead of sending them abroad to the UK or U.S. to learn skills. He was ONLY giving his opinion and referring to upgrading the existing skills of the youths of his state and the advice was NOT for all Yoruba youths to go and become apprentices in Aba.


Like other folks, I felt at that time that Ayo Fayose was trying to patronize the Ibos on the pages of newspapers was and very myopic for his lack of local research before making that comment because there are many private world-class shoes, bags and other pure leather manufacturing companies owned by Yorubas in Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, etc, that he could have sent the vibrant Ekiti youths to. The biggest shoe manufacturing company in Nigeria is owned by a Yoruba man in Lagos and they are export-ready shoes. One of the shoe and leather companies in Lagos is also Yoruba-owned and his company makes leather boots for the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Customs, etc. Another one in Ibadan called Itele makes luxury shoes for local and export consumption. There are many Yorubas scattered around manufacturing shoes, bespoke cloths, suits, and more and they didn't do any apprenticeships in Iboland but learned the skills on Yorubaland and abroad. Recently, the Lagos Government also set up a leather hub in Lagos for local shoe and bag entrepreneurs.

Even in Kano, there are leather processing and shoe manufacturing hubs with supplies of boots being made to the Nigerian Army and Police from the Hausa shoe producers.

I'm aware that for centuries, the Yorubas have been involved in long-distance trading to many West African kingdoms or empire from the Oyo Empire and that made Oyo to be rich and had money to be able to buy horses regularly from Hausaland through the Nupe country long before Nigeria even came into existence.

Today the Yorubas also have there own systems for financing their trading or business activities through non-interest funding and other methods of collectively pulling funds together and sharing profits for centuries now.
So, there are Yoruba groups that have been known for their business sagacity for centuries now like the Ijebus, Ijesas, Ogbomoshos, Igbomonas, etc.
