I intend to constantly invest a certain percentage of my salary on stocks for few coming years. But am confused on whether to make individual investment or go through Mutual Fund managers. I have been investing individually with my small funds before now but haven't tried mutual fund before.

Please your experiences and advice on Mutual funds in Nigeria will be greatly appreciated.

I tried mutual fund in standard chartered. After charging me 1000usd for mutual fund manager who monitored nothing. I was pissed. At the end of the 1/2 yr tenure, I spent 7000usd but received 6420usd after profit.

I had to cut the engagement because no one was monitoring the investment only concerned about their charges.

Pls know that I wasn't informed I will be paying for a manager, I just saw it withdrawn from my account, when I contacted the manager, then was told its their charges.

I wouldn't have if I knew they charge such.

I will still come back to fight them, not over, let me take care of business here first

I have invested in over five mutual fund they dont declare dividend that makes sense it is more of ponzi scheme especially DVCF OIL AND GAS no return in last four years. If you want to invest try ARM (mutual fund) first bank (mutual fund) and union trustees mixed fund. These are the ones i am a little bit happy with.

Have had some pleasing results from ARM and FBN Capitals. However you will need to check the value of you investment often as it rises and falls relative to the general capital market. Both have a variety of funds you can subscribe to

They are all official scams. No one cares if they payback to investors, any return on their investments. My experience is with zenith ethical fund and first heritage fund, owned by zenth bank and first bank respectively. That of zenith bank was even better because when I liquidated the investment after 4years without interest or dividend, I got back a sum close to what I invested. That of first heritage was a total waste of money. Infact after 5year, no interest, no dividend, my capital depreciated by over 20% while the fund managers keep getting richer and driving the latest corollas. My brother, just invest your money in treasury bills or fixed deposit untill you find some other way.

You are very right bros, more like ponzi scheme.

I invested in Intercontinental funds in 2010, there is no increment whatsoever.
Now they ve changed to ACAP or so. They deliberately made almost impossible to sell.
I called them that I want to sell mine, they said I should come to Lagos (from Abuja) to come and collect my original certificate, (that they caant send it via mail and I can't authorise some other person to collect for me).

@ Op, if you have money you can use it to buy land and keep, its surely better than fund

Your comments remind me of the movie assault on Wall Street. Bloody movie! I invested in a joint Mutual funds with my colleagues back in University. No increment whatsoever and now what remains of my initial investment can no longer buy touch-light Nokia.lol

Standard charteerd is quiet professional and very ethical. I'm surprised to hear this kind'a report.
I think this is subject to confirmation.

@Op. I suggest you read more on

"Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.

Benjamin Graham taught Warren Buffet all the investment skillz he's got going for him today..

In stocks, its advisable you go for penny stocks and be sure to use market flunctuations to your advantage and always seek a margin of safety..

The truth of the matter is, if you are an investment banker and you are making real cool money, you don't need to shout about it and you don't need other people's money to help you make more money.

its only people that don't make money that use peoples money to run advert and do marketing. When you make money you don't need marketing or advert, your good works would find you out..

Beware of Marketers and juicy adverts.. Beneath it all is grand conspiracy...

We all saw how Intercontinental bank and oceanic bank were operating like they were healthy banks, but they were real toxic and walking corps..

Be smart.

When you know what you are doing, there is no risk.. Warren buffet!

Risk comes as a result of lack of knowledge because knowledge is the Power..

You must be knowledgable about your about what instrument you invest in.

Stocks
Futures
Indices
Gold
Crude oil
Currencies

All this instruments have their unique characteristic and no one mutual fund is knowledgable on them all.

You can trade gold yourself abroad and monitor the fluctuations that arise as a result of demand and supply. Use the fluctuations to your own advantage and seek a margin of safety..

Here's an investment strategy from the renowned Warren Buffet..

The basic ideas of investing are to look at stocks as business, use the market's fluctuations to your advantage, and seek a margin of safety. Thats what Ben Graham taught us. A hundred years from now they will still be the cornerstones of investing

Warren Buffet. Sage of Omaha.
Oracle of Nebraska.

Investment, more than any other occupation, is a continual calculation, an instinctive exercise in foresight. You must "ALWAYS" be on top'a your game mehn!

@ P. Stacks, I get it, so does it mean am not suppose to invest because I had zero knowledge about the risk et all. Why do we have an investment manager?

Having no knowledge shouldn't be why I won't get any profit from it. Like I said, there were some discrepancies the way it was handled.

This is business, I hire you as an investment manager and expect you to do your job.

I stopped anyway, but going to more professional bodies until I sort out my knowledge and skills on this, meanwhile my money won't remain idle in the bank

ARM mutual funds, especially their Discovery Fund, are the last investment outlets I would advise anyone to put their money in. They will more than disappoint you. I'd sooner give my money to a confirmed 419ner first.

What it just means it that you do your spade work correctly. Get qualified investment managers. Goldman sachs has traders that posted all profits and no single loss in a period of 3months. You can google it up! Say from march to june. All trading sessions and no single loss recorded, that is genius, that is wizardry, that is perfection. You can source for such traders and you'l smile when its time you reap your dividend.

Going through their website. A bit worried about our Local investment managers, they just want to take their share and leave you to your faith.

Another scenerio i had with GTbank, when FG stopped the interest rates on fixed income, i had an 11.,5% interest rate with GTB, they role over every 6months, when the interest rate stopped, no one informed me but they were using my money for what i dont know. i was furious when i found out after a yr, thankGod i got my Initial deposit. i will try and make out time from work to know a little about this investement.
thanks again

Mutual funds are not too bad at least investing and pulling your funds are quite easy and they perform just as the NSE. i had a little money with StabicIBTC before the Financial crisis and i lost about 20% of the investment while most people who invested in stocks directly all lost at least 40%. so the bottom line is that, it is better than savings, less risky but also lesser returns compared to blue chip stocks. the choice is yours

blink182: Mutual funds are for lazy investors hence you shouldn't expect much.

Not true at all.

Mutual funds avail small and big investors the oppurtunity of bring their funds together for a fund manager to manage for them. Most mutual funds managers allocate the funds under the scheme into 4major areas of investment namely, 1. Real estate 2. Money market 3. Govt bonds and other long term instruments 4. Capital market to spread the risk.

The returns are commensurate to what you invest as you receive dividend as at when due. However, mutual funds do not give bonuses.

In Nigeria, the activities of all mutual fund managers are under the supervision of the securities and exchange commission SEC.

I work for Union Trustees and we have one of the best mutual funds around! cool

ALWAYS GET A LAWYER TO REVIEW THEIR INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT FIRST. CANNOT OVERSTRESS THE IMPORTANCE. A LOT OF THESE FIRMS KNOW HOW TO CHEAT ONE OF THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY SO YOUR LAWYER NEEDS TO MONITOR THEM!!!!!!

In my experience

Mutual funds do well in a boom economy

In a recession you suffer more because the managers still have to collect their fees

Put your money in a TB for now

Build up your knowlege

Do some real estate- there are good deals around if you are patient

people just dey shout treasury bill anyhow, shebi na the same government wey the finance minister talk say no get money again go pain the coupon at the end of the tenure. Nigeria is among the countries with highest % ROI in treasury bill. And from what I have known about treasury bill, the % goes up especially in time of crisis. Greece could be an example here. Maybe the reason for the high % ROI is because the govt is going broke as the finance minister lamented, so the high % is to attract more investors. Im not saying no one should invest in TB, rather you should know well what you are investing in. And when you invest, dont go and sleep. Get newspapers, stay updated regarding your investment and when its not performing as planned within your set time, omo cut your loss and move on to the another investment. Na your money, it has to work for you and not for others (banks).
