A friend is pouring in a lot of money in machinery and equipment to set up a fruit juice packaging company in Nigeria. He seems to have his research done but from the perspective of Folks in the country, what do you feel about the current fruit juice brands in the country?
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Seun(m): 7:44pm On Mar 24, 2006
what do you feel about the current fruit juice brands in the country?

I know that Chivita pineapple juice tastes better freshly squeezed pineapple juice!
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Zahymaka(m): 9:01pm On Mar 24, 2006
It'll be nice. Let's just pray it doesn't fade out the way Crush did when the owners unwisely sold out to Coca Cola [they were beating Coke then in Nigeria].
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by samm(m): 9:29pm On Mar 24, 2006
Was crush a juice drink or carbonated drink?  I think it was a carbonated drink.
So Chivita brand is one of the best in the country.  They say they don't add sugar and other additives like the other manufacturers do. Maybe that is why it tastes so good.
Which other brands are there and how are they doing?
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Skidoc(m): 9:37pm On Mar 24, 2006
How come Chivita sounds like Chiquita? Hmm, Nigerians and their copy-copy!!!
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by omon(m): 12:27am On Mar 25, 2006
Forget copy copy. It is only a strategy. Even the best business men in the world copy others. Check out Richard Branson's 'virgin cola'
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by larger20(m): 1:37am On Mar 25, 2006
I suggest frenchise for him. Dole is a great juice in North america. He can ask them about possible frenchise biz and they will give him some money too
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by gigitte(f): 10:56am On Mar 25, 2006
im pretty sure chivita has absolutely nothing to do with chiquita, is there any semblance of females on the packaging i think not, it probably has to do with chi, the ibo chi? and vita for life. after all there are other chi things too like poultry i believe

sha sha about fruit juice packaging, does he want to package fruit juice or sell fruit juice, either way i believe there is market for both, but the market for packaging is desperate, lol, naija does not really know how to package anything. check out that naija five alive packaging, quelle horreur!

What are you talking about? Females on the packaging? Chiquita is also a fruit packaging company here, so I don't know what you are talking about!
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by gigitte(f): 11:08am On Mar 25, 2006
lol sorry my brother i did not know, chiquita means girl in some language, but the chivita not come before chiquita
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Skidoc(m): 11:24am On Mar 25, 2006
Ok my sister kiss back to topic. Fruit packaging, that's a good business plan, only if you can spend good money in advertising strategies. And then your products must be sweet! Forget about the current ones in the country, Food produce will always sell fast no matter the number of competitors provided you advertise very well and the juices are sweet. There are virtually no loyal customers when it comes to things like this, once they see that yours is sweeter than the previous ones, they are quick to drop them.
Get interesting adverts on TV, Radio, Papers, etc. (The type of TV ad that people cram and dance to when it’s on). You can even do Buy one get one free, bonanzas, etc. and before you know it, your juice brand has become a household name in Nigeria. cheesy
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Seun(m): 1:25pm On Mar 25, 2006
I'm waiting to see how you'll make your juice sweeter than Chivita.
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by Skidoc(m): 2:00pm On Mar 25, 2006
Samm, you can do it! Is Chivita the sweetest juice in the world? angry How does it even taste, I would like to know so Seun send one to me. I'm sure it doesn't even taste half as good as most of the juices here. angry
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by otokx(m): 2:42pm On Mar 25, 2006
chivita is the best fruit juice packaging company in nigeria currently with very strong brands.
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by jajaopobo(m): 9:42am On Mar 27, 2006
The fruit juice market in Nigeria today is very saturated. Chivita is just one brand out of hundreds and to say that it is the best is very debatable. Since there is a lack of accurate market data in Nigeria, one cannot even say that it has the largest market share. However the brand is relatively poplar and was introduced very early on in the development of the Nigerian juice industry and at a period when Obj had just banned imporation of such. NBC's offering at the time (local 5alive) was not up to par and Chivita became and still remains a worthy alternative.

Now, if your friend wants to enter this market at it's advanced stage, he must know that he will be fighting an uphill battle to gain market share from these well established local and imported (illegaly of course) brands. His best bet would be to study the Nigerian market and adopt a marketing strategy/product identity that will exploit any hitherto unexplored niche. For instance, he may want to consider packaging 'Kunu' or 'Zobo' - both very popular but yet unpackaged local drinks in Nigeria, or he may want to present the same old pineapple, orange etc falvours in different forms (though i fear that this strategy may already have been fully exhausted).

So there you have it. Think about it and make up your mind.
Re: Fruit Juice Packaging In Nigeria by samm(m): 2:06pm On Mar 27, 2006
A lot of good points. I see that Chivita drink can be said to be one of the most popular drinks in the market. However, I see them not as a competition but as a benchmark a new company has to meet or exceed. As skidoc said, a great marketing strategy and an excellent product can equally place a new product in the top spot.

@Seun, I don't exactly have to beat their pineapple juice to be a market leader. We can develop an entirely new flavor you might like as much as Chivita pineapple juice. You will continue to enjoy your Chivita pineapple juice and when you feel like something different you can try our distinct flavor. You Gotta Love Great Choices!!

@JajaOpobo. Your idea is most original. We had earlier fingered three distinct flavors as our flagship product but your idea might have just given us the fourth. It will require more research including tests and anaysis but looks very feasible. Thanks.
So how popular are these drinks especially the Zobo drink? How many of you have actually tried it and what is your take on it?

This part of our business takes the 70 brix apple and pear concentrate and “ adds value “ to the product by making it into a fruit juice blend, also called a pre-blend. This will be your typical fruit juices like Orange, Apple, Red Grape, Mango/Orange, and Guava and so on. This product is made either as a 100% Fruit Juice with no added sugar, or a Nectar juice that allows sugar to be added.

These products are sold to mainly to bottlers that dilute the concentrate with water and bottle it and then sell it under their own brand name to the retail sector.
These juices are unique as you can blend as may fruit juices as you need to, to get a specific profile should the customer desire it.

This product is packed and sold in 50 lit, 200 lit, 1 000 lit and bulk as a preserved or un-preserved fruit juice. These juices have a shelf life of up to 2 years from date of manufacture in their concentrated form.

We found that bottlers prefer these “pre-blends” as it limits their risks in terms of stock holding and limits the range of ingredients needed to make their own blend. It also ensures that there are no real profile deviations from batch to batch as and how raw materials change during a season.

Below is a shortened list of our product range and flavours.
