I don't think some know the meaning of 'public' school. I have always said it long ago, religion, ANY religion should be kept out of public schools. If anyone wants to wear anything relating to their religion or recite anything, go to a religious school. Simple. There are several religious schools around. Why should you import any religion into what belongs to the public? Note, public includes atheists too.

We all want a united Nigeria, yet at public meetings, we ask people to pray according to their religious beliefs. Psychologically, it divides. Now Nigeria has degenerated to a stage where we don't trust ourselves. We select muslim/christian leaders or vice versa. If we are serious about moving forward, we better make religion private. Many advanced/advancing countries don't have religion in it's public sphere. People practise in private and that doesn't make them lesser citizens.

I have read a lot of Christian literature in my life
But Christians appear to rejoice when Muslims rights are infringed

Oh cry me a gully. Christians aren't the ones infringing on your right to life, take that shyte to ISIL's desk. Also if you are incapable of seeing the irony where Fashola, the respected and beloved leader of the state is a Muslim too and doesn't try to contravene the decision, then you know that you are the one with the problem.

Yea...boss, Nigeria is a secular state, this is what I have trouble trying to convey to even intelligent Muslims. You can't pick and choose your adherence to the constitution, there is a good reason for that. Silly Muslims who see this as a RIGHT need to be orientated cos that's just a fallacy in a secular state.

Lemme make some point clear 2 u

1. We are in a country dat supposely supports freedom of religion. D muslim here is only saying; Look, my religion says I should cover my hair ( use the Hijab once I attain puberty) just allow me to practice my religion since my country is not against freedom of religion.

2. D muslims here ain't saying everybody (Christians & idol worshippers inclusive) must use the Hijab

3. Head-covering does not in anyway go against any religion here (Nigeria). Infact, if u know ur Bible very well, the word "Veil" shouldn't be a strange thing to you. #AcientChristianity... Peace unto you bro.

Noooo, we are in a SECULAR country. NOT A RELIGIOUS one. Your safety and right to practice your religion is guaranteed and nothing else.

Dress code for a government school must be impartial to ALL students, if Muslims are allowed Hijabs by Jove my kids should go in their pajamas cos my religion gives them the right to.

Once again I say, Nigeria is a SECULAR state, meant to accommodate all her religions and treat them equally (nevermind the truncation of the constitution by Sharia law in the north)

Yes!!!
The difference is that they are ONLY required to wear it to church
They are NOT required to wear it to the market, shops, hospitals
So their wearing it is an EXCEPTION for only a few hours a day
As for the Hijab, wearing it is the NORM - school, market, bus, hospital, park etc
They are required to wear it at all times outside the home

Let me ask this, is there a place where women are not required to wear underwear?[quote]

Sorry try using another example as the one above is absolutely ridiculous and illogical.

Are underwears meant for the open??

So if underwears should be underwears in the real and original sense, should hijab? Being that it's also an underwear be the most exposed?

I'm not a christian neither am I a muslim so I am indifferent and also neutral here. I think what you Muslims should do is to find a way to make sure the Hijab being worn is the same colour as the school uniform. There is a reason it's being called "School uniform".

u are now coming down a little bit. And who told u d hijab worn is of different colour?
The hijab is d same colour as d uniform. Its their right, dey shld be allow to wear hijab

I hope I'm chating with Adult .... I said IRK as a religion studies teach Islam and Hijab is Islam then how would a muslim student (affected student) be taught Hijab is a model of dressing for a muslim girl/lady/woman then such is banned from her school ..... Lagos state Public school is religion intolerant and Lagos state can never win this struggle !!!

Later they would say Muslims are stubborn , why wouldn't muslims all over the world rise to these maltreatment and ill judgement !!!

How could a school destroy the tenet of modesty a home imbibed on a girl ...... A school as an agent of socialisation should promote the tenet of modesty from home and not barred the positive value system a home imbibed on their children !!!

If I were a lawyer, I would take up this for free ... I have high interest in this case .... Lets watch what will happened in Appeal court !!

My friend, you don't get it. You as a Muslim have a right to freedom of worship. But you must understand that religion is akin to one man's meat been another man's poison. What you tolerate in your religion may be offensive to another person's religion and vice versa. That's why a balance has to be maintained especially in PUBLIC SCHOOLS where different religious adherents gather to learn. Insisting your little girl must practice the IRK because it is taught her right their in school means she too must practice se.x in school as taught her in Biology.

If you want your child to live a completely religious life, have her admitted to one of your religious schools, NOT A PUBLIC SCHOOL THAT HAS CHILDREN OF BELIEVERS AND NON BELIEVERS AS STUDENTS.

IF YOU GUYS CONTINUE LIKE THIS, SOON AND VERY SOON, ATHEISTS WILL APPROACH OUR LAW COURT AND DEMAND GOD'S NAME NEVER TO BE MENTIONED IN ANY PUBLIC GATHERING INVOLVING THEM, NOT TO TALK OF WEARING RELIGIOUS ATTIRE THEREIN. AND IT WILL BE GRANTED THEM BECAUSE IT'S THEIR RIGHT!

LAGOS STATE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE NOT RELIGION INTOLERANT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT WORSHIP CENTERS.!!

Christians persist in preaching inside commercial vehicles
This is something that is forced upon me even if I don't look up from a magazine I am reading
But someone wearing Hijab will enter and leave the same boss without making any fuss

Next time a Christian preaches inside a bus and you don't like it, STOP HIM/HER FROM PREACHING. IT'S YOUR RIGHT!

So why do we have
"So help me God" in the National Pledge?
Or is CRK not taught in public schools?

Why is it that Muslims never object to whatever Christians want while
Christians get agitated whenever Muslims want anything

Let me see how objective you are
Can we have?
Workdays as Mondays to Fridays 1st half of the year and
Sundays to Thursdays - 2nd half of the year
OR
Workdays as Mondays to Fridays odd number years
Sundays to Thursdays - even number years

I have been following your ranting for 2 pages now, i feel I must reply you once.
1) the Saturday and Sunday holidays were not made because of Christians. Saturday is a weekend, while Sunday is the start of a new week. it is usually work free in most parts of the world, it has nothing to do with religion

2) Nigeria is a secular state, it does not endorse any particular religion. so you cannot bring your religion to a school were other religious worshipers congregate!. if the Muslims must wear hijab to school, them the seraphin av cherubs should be allowed to come without shoes, the ifa worshipers would come with red cloth and cowries around there neck. what kind of school would we have?

3) you keep going on and on about a national Christmas tree, as if we do not have a national mosque built with tax payers money too. or Nigeria does not belong to OIC against the will of Christians. so when you talk about exclusionism, you do not have a point.

4) lagos state governor is a Muslim, but one who is not an extremist. the rational part if his brain is still intact.

5) talking about exclusionism, why don't you allow people to comment of your Islamic threads on nairaland except they swear allegiance to your Allah? or do the Christians also prevent you from commenting on their threads? you Muslims just don't know how to coexist with other rational humans

Nigeria is a secular state, meaning you should not bring your religion to school period! you can't wear a hijab to school, same way you cant wear a rosary or chaplet.

May God really save us in this country, iv read a lot of post here and all seem to be for the hijab ban. Im sorry but in my opinion I believe most of us here are judging based on the current crisis going on in the world as to how islam is potrayed as violent and conservative. We forget that long before now students have being wearing hijabs to schools without complains. Its part of the religion. Every morning from mondays to sunday christens do thier morning devotion, on asemblies mon to thursday they pray on asemblies leaving just friday for muslims. If we really must grow in this nation we need to understand how to tolerate our differences by understanding objectively the reasons behind issues perhaps we would begin to see how all the atrocities being displayed over the world are extremly anti-islam.

Hijab these days are used more by Islamic extremists to make the emphasis: "I am a Muslim." Hijab became more popular among Nigerian Muslims after the 12 northern states took to sharia criminal laws, and OBJ govt did not stop them.
