Shyee:

I read somewhere that Naija cgpa tend to weigh more than Canadian's

I earlier said :

pchax:

Baba it is not as direct as that ooo... Of course, that is a simple way to convert but grading systems are different. They have the A+, A, A-, B+ and what have you and each of those grades carry different weights. While in Nigeria it is just the plain A, B,C,D etc. A professor there once told me that a Nigerian 3.50/5.00 is roughly equivalent to their own 3.2/4.0. But if we do the maths normally a Nigerian 3.50/5.00 is equivalent to 2.80/4.00.
So my advise to the OP is to check the departmental site of all his interested Uni's. Some have different countries and their grade point conversion scales. Some just look at your last 2 years course and check out the number of As and Bs.
In summary, grade point conversion is not as easy as it seems. Cheers!

Just for the records, Naija cgpa doesn't weigh more than Canada's own. I guess it was the bolded part above that confused my brother shyee. To put it more in context, during my search for admission I met a Nigerian Professor that teaches in a North American school. I told him I graduated with a 3.56/5.00 and I think my chances are slim. He said I shouldn't worry, that it is still a second class upper and a second class upper is equivalent to a 3.10 - 3.40 on their own scale.
My the main intention of my earlier post was just to say that grade conversion is not simple arithmetic. Infact there is no global formula for grade conversions. Having said that, I wouldn't advice someone with a 3rd class to apply for MSc straight.

Cheers!

I dint apply thru an agency, I gave her my CIC account details...she logged in and uploaded it herself...gave her list of what she needs to upload.

My advice, DO NOT USE AN AGENCY!!!!!!

Snappyfingaz:

Sorry to intrude... How did you manage not to see the statement of account you applied with? You applied through an agency?

This must be the fastest moving part of this forum's series. It's normal tho; that's how records get broken.
Sorry, if I'm digging out a buried issue. I think a school with relatively low competition in the intended course will admit a 3rd class degree. But such schools are very hard to find, especially in a developed country like Canada. It could be true that there's no ratio or formula for CGPA conversion because really, there's no valid basis for comparison between our education system and Canada's. So what they look at are the prerequisite courses for the programs. Even if you didn't pass them as required by the program, and there is room to still consider you, then you may be offered a provisional admission into a program (sorta like a pre-masters), which is not the real program and is NOT FREE. Every school has its own strategy so don't bank on these concepts I'm suggesting. When it comes to issues of low CGPA, it's better to mail the department directly. If you're lucky, they'd tell you your chances straight up without requiring you put in an actual application, which is usually NOT FREE.

This is not for debate purposes, they are just my thoughts and I hope it answers the question someone came here asking about his chance with his 3rd class.

That being said, I know of some people that got admission into dip and adv dip courses in Canada.

Meanwhile, CIC is still hanging our list o. No medical call yet. *fingers crossed*

Naija ppl don go speak pigin for MUN and now dey are demanding for IELTS/TOEFL from nigerians saying we hv complicated languages... grin grin
Nabylet:

Yes, mun asked me for toefl last week Friday, after series of emails and arguments to waive it for me, I called the assistant registrar and he said Nigeria is a complicated country with plenty languages. That even though our language of instruction in schools is English, we don't speak it outside the classroom and in personal/social interaction - that's exactly what he said... I just fashied the school.

Any which way, my grade conversion formula is specifically written on one of the Canadian's university website. Maybe MUN, MANITOBA... Well, it could be googled.
End Point is, the lady that asked the question still got hope.

Is that a first class or 2"1 in your uni? When it comes to CGPA for admission, different schools look for different things. Let me take my course as an example (Computer Science). When I was communicating with my potential supervisor, she asked for some specific courses like Principles of Compilers, Data Structures and Algorithms, Object Oriented Programming and 2 or 3 other courses. Luckily for me I got Bs and As in those course regardless of my 3.56/5.0.

Also, some people look at last 2 years of study and see how your grades were. The thinking behind this is that your last two years is more of a specialized version of your course. For example, using my course again, in Level 100, I did Physics, Chemistry and some other basic courses that don't look like computer. As I got to Level 400 and 500 all my courses were basically focused on my degree. So some universities just focus on your last two years cos the foundation years do not speak much about your particular degree.

Some Universities just look at all the countries in the world and their degree classes and look for broad equivalent. For example, a degree classified by Sehr Gut in the German educational system is equivalent to a 2"1 in the UK (or Nigeria)

Below is a kind of degree equivalences that different schools use:

University of Alberta
University of Calgary (You would notice for Nigeria they said a 2"1 or 4.0/5.0. That should answer your question if you want to apply to calgary).
University of Dalhousie
UBC (my favourite school in Canada. Only if Vancouver is not crazily expensive to live in)

Best bet, kindly mail their graduate secretaries. THEY WOULD RESPOND.
