Farming Season 2015 by stagger: 7:08pm On Feb 14, 2015
Hi guys. We are in February, which is just two months away from the start of the rainy season. Those of us in the northern part of the country have not seen a drop of rain since November last year, so we are eagerly waiting for the rains to commence.

What is the aim of this thread?

a) To get those who have never participated in agriculture to use this vocation to change their story this year.
b) State the practical facts on cultivation of staple crops such as maize, cassava, vegetables, etc.
c) Dispel the myths surrounding farming.

Please the experts here should help us out with the following information:

- What does it take to operate an account with the Bank of Agriculture?
- How does an intending farmer get registered in the national database of farmers, and consequently get the e-wallet registration done?
- Accessing farming inputs at government controlled prices using the e-wallet.
- Obtaining seeds. The how, where and when.
- How to start mechanizing the farming process. I seem to have noticed too much emphasis on use of farm workers, manual weeding, etc. Surely we should have moved on from these manual processes.
- Any other relevant information.

Hope this thread will go well. Please no quarreling here. Exchange of ideas are welcome, in a clean manner. We shall all succeed.

Thank you.

I'm also following and I think this will prepare many of us for the very nearest future. Those who have valuable information should, please, feel free to share with us.
Re: Farming Season 2015 by stagger: 2:04pm On Feb 15, 2015
I will take the first step by visiting a branch of the Bank of Agriculture, the Fed Ministry of Agriculture and 2 river basin authorities. Purpose of visits are:

a) Requirements for BoA account opening and loans.
b) More information about the e-wallet and biometric farmer registration.
c) More info about the Nagropreneur scheme.
d) Land lease.

Will also call the IITA to inquire about the new wonder maize seedlings reputed to deliver 5 to 6 tons of maize per hectare, while requiring little rain and being highly resistant to Striga. Update within the week.

Sorry, but this is not the purpose of this thread. I believe there is a cashew thread where you can ask this question. This thread is strictly for those who want to farm staples this farming season.

I WAS AT BOA IBADAN ON MON.THE FOLLOWING ARE MY FINDINGS:
1.U NEED TO OPEN AND OPERATE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM FOR 3 MONTHS AND THE HOLDER MUST HAVE 20% OF THE LOAN REQUIRED IN HIS/HER ACCT.
2.START OFF LOAN IS 250K WITH 2 GUARANTORS (1 CIVIL SERVANT AND ANY OTHER PERSON)LOAN PAYABLE IN 18 MONTHS WITH 12% INTEREST FOR AGRIC AND 20% FOR BIZ.
3.ACCT OPENING IS 3K WITH 4 PASSPORT PHOTO.
4.ANY LOAN ABOVE 250K IE MAYBE 1 - 100M NEEDS A COLLATERAL WITH C of O.
5.LOAN IS GIVEN TO ON GOING BUSINESS.

Thanks.
When I went to a BOA sometime last year, I got similar info.
In fact, I was told that for 250K and above loan, the collateral has to be a building with C of O (either the farmhouse or other building for the business). In other words, land itself cannot stand as collateral. I forgot to ask if stocks in the capital market can be used, but I doubt it.

The only other problem I have with BOA is that I cannot access loan as a startup.

Here the period is 6 months, and the branch of BoA administering the account must be the one covering the jurisdiction where your farm operates. Initial loan is 150K. If paid back in time and all goes well, a second loan can be given. The 3 months tenure is for NCGA members or for some other farming cooperative. If you are not registered, you will have to run the account for 6 months. No need for collateral, but you must put down a certain percentage equity as well.

Collateral not needed except loan exceeds N1m. If you use land, it must be one that must be of commercial value (has all land papers and in a prime location). Must have a physically verifiable farm.

Account transactions must mirror loan to be taken. For instance, you cannot be paying in and withdrawing N2,000 or N3,000 and then show up to demand for N1m loan.

Next stage of my inquiry is two-fold:

a) Land lease from river basin authority covering my intended usage state.
b) Registration in GES e-wallet scheme for 2015.

After this, I will pay a visit to a maize demonstration farm to see if the new maize seedlings touted to deliver up to 6tons per hectare are actually in use and delivering according to specs.

The 2 varieties were announced last year. So I want to do some fact finding for myself to see if it was just propaganda or if it is for real.

Nice job sir, but pls what of those of us in govt paid jobs that have farms is it possible to obtain loans 1m and above and be able to pay back by installments(both principal and interest). Oga stagger am very much interested in that GES e-wallet scheme o. I hope u give us feedback soon.
Re: Farming Season 2015 by stagger: 10:15am On Feb 23, 2015
Under the GES ewallet scheme, farmers get access to subsidized inputs and seeds which they pay for using the mobile money facility from their phones courtesy of the Cellulant platform.

Now there is a registration window which opens just before the farming season. This is at ward level so you are supposed to register in the ward closest to your farm. After registration, you will get a text informing you to go to a collection centre to pick your inputs.

Now the news all over town is that it has eliminated the fertilizer cartels and the corruption in the system. The rumours are that the corruption has simply metamorphosed and changed format. I won't say more.

Like I said, this is a practical fact finding, do-it-yourself mission to ascertain the true state of affairs. Stay tuned.
Re: Farming Season 2015 by Lesgupnigeria(m): 2:15pm On Feb 23, 2015
@stagger and co.

Well done. The best alternative to get access to loan is.to.join NCGA.

Accessing the loan will require that you put down 10% equity of the amount you wanted to borrow.

If you want to join the cooperative, you can send a message to me to get access to the contact of NCGA executives for proper registration.

Registration is around 6k/annum although this varies from.state to state.

Hello sir, I truly enjoyed your posts on that cassava thread, you are more practical, and straight to point hence my decision to follow you. Though my following you was born out of my quest to know who this stager is then I stumbled on this thread.
Please I want to know if the window is still open for this ewallet thank you. You are more of a book!
