Which Rivers website, it can never be an official Rivers website. A snapshot should follow your claims.

Pazienza i am Ikwerre and can surely tell you my people take it badly whenever they are referred to as Igbos, it is about the worst insult you can give an Ikwerreman.

If we are Igbos, what then was the point of ensuring we are recognised as a separate entity.

The Ikwerres and Igbos share common boundary so it shouldn't come as a surprise when words, traditions and customs are sometimes shared, but it doesn't necessarily make us the same people.

If you wanted to experience the sentiment firsthand, then i suggest you come into an Ikwerre gathering and tell them they are Igbos.

You wouldn't do that in yoir right senses.

Even if I get you a snap shot of it, will it change anything? Will it stop your Igbophobia.

You are desperately trying so hard to derail this thread and turn it into an Ikwerre identity denial thread, like Nairaland doesn't already have enough of such threads.

Here is what your ancestors had to say about your ethnicity and even the colonial masters http://www.elombah.com/index.php/special-reports/16602-ikwerre-is-igbo

On the topic:

It is going to be extremely difficult to enumerate all the 'dialects' spoken in the Igbo area.

First of all, one has to decide what constitutes a dialect. No two communities in the Igbo area speak exactly the same. Even within the sub-ethnicities (Nkanu, Agbaja, Ndoki, Ngwa, etc) there are differences from one village-group to another. If these differences are taken to define what a dialect should be, then there may be as many dialects as there are communities in Igboland.

Point is, it doesn't matter what Igbo means in your language. What matters is what it means in the language of those directly concerned.
Lol,i can't shout. Just like Olaniyi almost corresponds to 'Spoil' in Igbo language. Those people should go and respect themselves.

Udi is also Waawa. In fact, all communities in Enugu State that say 'wa' for 'mba' ('no') are tagged Waawa.

Sometimes the Waawa tag is also extended to Awka people in Anambra (who also say 'wa'), but they reject the term vehemently and actually consider it derogatory.

It is good to understand. It means igbos in Sierra Leone. I know u wud ask how come? Igbos again.

They are d slaves taken to USA. After slavery was abolished, they were taking to Sierra Leone but the slaves decided to remain there and not return but still kept their original identity. I had a class mate back then and he confirmed it.

For the records even a part of Congo speaks igbo. Had a neighbour who told me this on hearing my name. Though the spelling was different. But he told me there were people who spoke igbo language in his country.

You would have all recorded history destroyed and rendered void.

You will make up ridiculous stories of your original name being Iwhuruohna and that Ndiigbo were the ones who caused your name to become Ikwerre because according to your fabricated stories, the Igbo interpreter was asking the Ikwerres if they agreed to the terms and conditions of the white men, upon which they said "Ekwerellam" and from hence forth you lots became known as Ikwerre.

You fabricate stories of Bini migration. You lots are a disgrace.

The op did not mention ikwerre as a sub Igbo group, rather as an Igboid group which is indisputable. Let people from the non- ikwerre groups you mentioned come and counter the inclusion of their groups.
Btw who did these your migrant ancestors marry? Who did they meet in the land you presently occupy? common sense would point to them having met the people whose language influenced theirs, right? Let that sink, then pray, tell me how you own the land you claim if you are self-confessed migrants.

Very few people know about this group but there are actually an Igbo group in Limbe, Cameroon. A friend of mine is actually from that area. He was the first Igbo boy I met that told me he was from Cameroon, till date I envy the sh1t out of those people. They are lucky not be in Nigeria. Anyway, according to him his people are Igbo group in Cameroon but sadly, alot of their culture have intermixed with the Bamouns of Cameroon so their culture is more identical to them than to Igbos in Nigeria. But they still self identify as Igbo despite losing many connections to Igbos of Nigeria. Supposedly their hometown is very close to Nigeria and that's why they still maintain their identity at least according to him. I know they equally recently joined Ohaneze. There rarely much written about them on google to be honest. I went looking for more information about them and apart from the old colonization papers on them, nothing else except pictures of their inauguration of ohaneze. I do believe their ohaneze is also different from the igbo ones in Nigeria; there's more of a kingship than anything else. I may be wrong but from the picture I saw of the inauguration it looks more of a celebration for a king.

In as much as I envy those people and I wish Asaba was in their place, I honestly don't understand why they still claim Igbo since they've lost their culture, the language (trust me when my friends speaks, despite them calling it Igbo. It is not Igbo. It sound like a made up language. They corrupted the living sh1t out of that language), and even ohaneze is a king to them. They pretty much lost the identity that say Igbo so don't understand why they call themselves igbo. anyway, either way i still envy them and I ain't ashamed to say it. I seriously wish my people were lucky enough to be like them and was carved out Nigeria the last time it was carved

Why re-invent history? Look for the book, The History Of Igbos by Margaret Isichie (wriiten before the civil war)...The only Igboid group singled out for its marked difference was the Ohafia. All these you've mentioned are politically differentiated more or less! Ohafia is the most distinct in variant dialect, culture and tradition! Funny enough, it's not even in your list...Lol! 'Igboid' as it is currently used in academic circles cover the following 'languages':

1.) Igbo Proper (an all-encompassing name for all the lects spoken in the South-East, except for the Ezza-Izi-Ikwo-Mgbo cluster)

2. Ezza-Izi-Ikwo-Mgbo

3. Ika

4. Ukwuani-Aboh-Ndoni

5. Ogba

6. Enuani

7. Etche

8. Ikwerre

9. Ekpeye (the most distinct of them all).

Every academic source there is will tell you the same thing.

Op I think we should make a comprehensive list that would be all inclusive.

Awgu is a large sub-ethnic group in Enugu West Senatorial....our land stretching from Ituku down to Abia state in the south and ebonyi state to the east, oji river to west and nkanu in the north.

In fact, the old Awgu included present day Oji river and Aninri.

But I must commend your effort Op.

The op of this thread has maliciously included Ikwerre amongst the various Igbo clans.

The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognises the Igbo and Ikwerre as two separate tribes..Nigerians can always refer to the constitution whenever that need arises.

We are not surprised at the Igbos and their tendencies because other Nigerians can prove that are always a provocative tribe and have the nature of attaching themselves to other people either by hook or crook.

tonychristopher, Pazienza, emmysoftyou, babyosisi, freeglobe, Abagworo and other NL igbos should do well to inform the op.

You can deceive non-Rivers people, but you can't deceive an Okrika man! You know how we regard you Ikwerre people? Lol! Story for another day! Only an imp would dent his or her heritage for a mess of porridge or to revise history? Are you one? I hope not...

Ikwerre and Ekpeye are languages whose content are almost 80% Igbo; how they became more related to Benin than Igbo beats my imagination! When as an Okrika man I tell you I'm Ijaw, you'd see sufficient evidence of that in my language and culture! Your Ikwerre culture is basically Igbo culture!! Please don't give me that lame story of marrying Igbo women and losing your language and culture! Okrikans married Igbos too (I have strong Igbo blood), but how come we didn't lose our language and culture?

Stop fooling yourself! You should be ashamed of joining other Nigerians to abuse Igbos, when their blood runs in your vein! Shame on you!!

As for the Ndoni people they have never accepted been igbo, only time shall tell, we shall all be here and hear that Rivers state Govt deports 1,000 igbos back to south east under the administration of Gov-elect Chief Nyesom wike, Continue bringing hatred for your self..

Under the administration of former governor of rivers state Dr. Peter Odilli of Ndoni, you igbos organised a prayer for all ur igbo brothers to come together and pray, concerning there stay in port harcourt (ikwerre land) and other part of rivers state, that there is an evil plan to be carried out on the igbos in rivers state.

You were been invited to the state house of assembly for organising such a prayer with the concept of the state govt, which the so called Gov. Not only that, the ikwerre concil of elders summoned you igbos and asked you people to pay fine for organising such a prayer with out the concept of the ikwerre people who own the land you derive ur daily bread. just to name a few.

You igbos are group of confused people who have no direction, the most divided ethnic group in nigeria, you are so hated all over nigeria because of your silly attitude.

The ikwerres, ogbas, ekpeye, etche and Ndoni of rivers state are not members of your Ohaeze ndi igbo organisation i wounder why you idiots include us in your irritating igbo identity we dnt belong,

Below is a brief history of the ikwerre, ogba and ekpeye people of rivers state which the benin cultural heritage have confirmed it when they visited port harcourt (ikwerre land), Ogba and ekpeye you fools:

Chief N.M.T. Solomon (2004), native of Ikodu Ubie in Ekpeyeland, in
his narrative draws heavily from the now authenticated written
historical records delivered by various informed sources including
“Eketu (Weber) of Ubeta, assumed to have lived for over two hundred
(200) years as the oldest man in all Ekpeye, Ogba and Iwhnurọ hna (or
Ikwerre), at that time (and) was asked to narrate the history and
customs of Ekpeye people” as unfolded in his lifetime. Here is what he
said, which has been validated by the accounts of the current
generation through responses to our questionnaires and direct
interviews thereby increasing our level of confidence on the data:
Ekpeye, born in Benin, was the first of the three sons of Akalaka.
While in Ndoni, he married a second wife to gain the love and favour
of the people. The new wife gave birth to a son, which he named Ogba.
Akalaka was still in Ndoni when his first wife, the mother of Ekpeye,
gave birth to his third son called Ihruoha (Ikwerre) .

Proudly Ikwerre..

Ikwerre has 4 local govtment areas in rivers state for those who thinks its only Port harcourt, no see image below:

It is Elizabeth Isichei. And I have read her books. And no where did she claim Ohafia as the most divergent dialect.

Secondly, the list is NOT my list. This is the current linguistic classification of the lects spoken in the Igbo area.

Repeat: It is NOT my list. As a matter of fact, I actually disagree with the lumping together of all the Southeastern lects (save for Ezza-Izi-Ikwo-Mgbo) as one 'language' called Igbo Proper, while recognising the distinctiveness of the other lects. I feel if the same criteria are used, Igbo Proper could be further broken up into over a dozen 'languages'.
