Guys,
I am new on Nairaland and have been going through the trends although a bit lengthy and difficult to read all. I applied to four fours in Canada for my masters in Economics- University of Ottawa, University of waterloo, Brock University, Wilfrid laurier university and did not get any of the admission. I have very good grades and finished with 4.49 in school and have about 4 year experience in a good company. I am wondering what I could have done wrong and was very pained when I didn't get any of the admission. Can anyone here advise me.

I don't think you did anything wrong perhaps, they had many strong applications and your letters of recommendation were not strong enough. You could give it a shot again and try talk to the graduate program director before applying. May I ask what school you finished from?

Please House,
Can anyone please suggest the best Bank Master Card to use with a reasonable charge(s) on withdrawal in Canada.
I have an account with the following banks: Stanbic, Fidelity, Skye, UBA, FCMB, GTB, FirstBank.
Also,what is the best means to transfer funds to canada? Form A or Dom Account. I'll appreciate you kind responses.

Cheers

I studied Economics in school and applied for masters in economics, I understand your point but I had expected that to should be easier for me since I applied to the exact same course I studied in school.

@Bao1004
Sometimes it's not all about the CGPA. It's about the course content of your transcript.
If the school feels you haven't done enough in your UG to grant you access into the masters you will find it difficult.

My friend had the same GP and is a civil engineering graduate but has bn applying into chemical and petroleum engineering in canadian universites.
None has offered him admission just because his course content do not cater for a masters in his proposed field.

You could check your course content and judge yourself if it'll give u an advantage

I can't say.. Ask JohnDuke259 and toboy, they used courier services too. I don't think it will affect.
I didn't know thats what was referred to as collection slip. I asked if he was referring to the collection mail sent to me, he said No.
When it was almost leading to an argument, I brought the papers in my bag, he saw the passport copy with receipt, and said that is your collection slip.
I wasn't told during biometrics that the paper is important, thank God I took it along.. And it has not been mentioned on this thread

I don't think it will affect it.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot. Well, I thought I wrote a fairly good SOP but I can't say it's good anymore cause I didn't get in. Hopefully, I would try Again but next year September is far mehn. Sad
thesoj:
@bao1004

As @TheBae said, absolutely do NOT plagiarize your SOP. Make sure you write it all by yourself. It will require a lot of thinking and self-discovery, but it will be well worth it. When I was applying to grad school, I remember it took me one month to get to what I considered a perfect SOP that truly represented me. The experience of writing the SOP shaped both my writing skills and my knowledge of self. Do not hesitate to have someone that knows you well (and/or is a really good writer) read and critique it during the writing process. The quality of the writing and grammar, not just the content, has to be very good as well.

I'm so sorry to hear that you weren't accepted at any of the schools.

Did you write an extremely compelling statement of purpose? This part is critically important, no matter your CGPA. In particular, did you in your SOP express passion for why you want to do an MSc in said school and did you explain how your work experience and other experiences have shaped or will shape your desire to study further? Did you explain, in nuance, what part of economics intrigues you and why? Did you explain what it is about their school and which faculty members' research work piques your interest and why? Did you explain what it is you have done that shows your passion for economics?

US/Canadian schools really like passionate people, and you have to let that shine through in your application. These schools would admit a candidate with inferior CGPA if he/she shows significant passion and potential (which makes sense). It is not too unusual for a high CGPA candidate to be declined admission (due to other competitive candidates), though it is a bit unusual to be declined by all four schools.

I suggest you apply again. You have a very high chance of admission by several schools should you decide to let your application flow with passion this time. I apologize in advance if my presumption about your SOP is wrong.

Also, did you make sure your recommenders wrote very good (but realistic and non-psycophantic) recommendation letters on your behalf?

Cheers. E go beta

Do you think any serious applicant wouldn't write a very good SoP? I'm just thinking his recommendation letters could be the problem.

Re: Travelling To Canada Part 8 by TheBae: 9:24pm On Jul 22, 2015
"Good" is relative. What you think is good might not be good enough. Not everyone knows how to draft an outstanding SOP that's why people seek 3rd or 4th opinions. Recommendation letters are also important but SOP is like the major "sell yourself" part of the application.

Thanks for the encouragement, I do appreciate and I hope to try again even though most of the schools in Canada for commercial courses like economics resume September and that's pretty far, I had thought my SOP was good but maybe that was my judgement and will have to revisit it.. The schools didn't give any particular reasons so difficult to tell where the problem came from. If I think I will need help and guiadiance on the SOP so I can sure if I did the right thing in the first Place.
