Wale was a guest at the White House yesterday for a “beating the odds” summit which aims to encourage kids to sign up for college.

While most will applaud Wale serving as a positive role model for American youth, a lot of Americans chose to criticize Wale’s choice of dressing rather, which was a custom made Igbo attire popularly known as Etibo made by Zini Couture, who also makes attires for Olamide and the YBNL crew.

He was criticized for not looking ‘professional’ enough.

Unfortunately for the (probably bigoted) critics, Wale actually changed into that attire for his performance. While giving a talk during the lecture part of the summit, he was dressed conventionally in dress shirt and slacks.

Not like there was anything wrong in the Etibo anyway.

Wale’s response to the criticism was,

Presentable? I performed in a Nigerian native top & hard bottoms. @Zinicouture is presentable. Suit to perform? No.

Must we follow Americans in all they do?
We are the giant of Africa.........pls CNN should re-broadcast it to their hearing, just in case they forgot.

Etibo is NOT igbo

In links below from books dating as far back as the 1980's it is clearly stated as Kalabari (part of ijaw) attire.
The name comes from Eighty Bob (Shillings) per shirt.

If someone states Nigeria is in east Africa I'm sure it would be an issue.

Congrats to Wale for repping Africa smiley

Waited for a comment like this. While some Americans criticized Wale for wearing the nigerian dress, you are now criticizing the op for calling it igbo. Smh

The attire is on point, haters can go and quench!

These Caucasians don't want their chocolate skinned country men to associate with their roots, thats why they masturbbate at bad news from sub-saharan Africa.
