Good. You'd be taking a step in the right direction bro. I did some months back. Quit a #Big4 to start my company. All you need is a Plan. And a will to stick in even when it isn't coming very easy. Plus I must tell you something you've heard over and over again...THERE ARE LOTS OF UPS AND DOWNS. You have to be able to weather all kinda seasons. Today will be very good...and the next day, not too good. The morning may be dull but a lot happens in 3 hours after midday and you end up having a great day...Like that, like that...

All the very best.

Set things in motion before you resign. Being an entrepreneur is not by proclamation. You need to have the know how and be financially capable. I see a lot of so-called entrepreneurs roaming the street of Lagos with one loaf of Agege bread on one hand and a copy of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" on the other hand.

This post make me laugh....

Reading through comments, I observed no one is actually answering his concerns.

My advise is;

You have to decisive and make the decision. Procrastinating the decision will just keep the issue lingering in your mind.

Do you have capital or access to capital? if yes, then what are you waiting for? Secondly, there are investors everywhere you just need to find them and pitch your idea.

Do you strongly believe in your idea? if yes, then commit yourself totally to it and you will surely make it. First year will be difficult no doubt, but if you hang on and pass through the difficult period, you will soon become an employer.

Are you a family man? if not, then this is the best time to leap into entrepreneurship. it is very liberating especially if you know what you are doing.

How much are you receiving as salary? can you save from it to start your business? if yes, save some money which you will use personally so you don't depend on any1

Is entrepreneurship your dream? if yes, then take the leap out of the plane. when you do, you will slowly build your self.

People fail to realize that entrepreneurship is a job and you can even have different businesses. Nigeria has groomed most of us to believe that you can only make a living from a white collar job. But guess what, it is a lie. Having your business at a young age is the best feeling.

People think only of failure. Am not saying that failure is not possible. it is and you will probably fail. if you do, you become tougher and more focused to be successful. Furthermore, just think you are successful in your business. You become a role model to so many.

In summary, assess yourself and make the decision. With Planning, hard work, smart work and determination any business you do will be successful

Hope I helped out.

Peace

My dear if your job PAYS WELL, I beg of you DO NOT QUIT. The entrepreneural market is Saturated. Almost Every graduate/non graduate is now a business person. I understand the joy of being an entrepreneur but please do your home work well before bandwagoning. #My1cent

The entrepreneurial market can never be over saturated. If it is, why do we still have so much problems in Nigeria to solve. Entrepreneurs are problem solvers- simple. By the way, is the job market not saturated with all sorts?...Bsc. OND, HND, Msc, MBA, PHd, DBA......but how many of these degree holders have you seen in the rich list. Business owners hire them..(think about it for a second)

Pls, don't quit your job. You are going to regret it later. Combine the both and quit when the time is right.

I understand what you mean. However, this cannot work for everybody especially when you have a business that will require your supervision and full attention. Doing business on the side means that you are not ready yet

Can't you get someone to do that for you while you become the CEO/MD?

With your present job, that's Multiple Streams of Income

I thought about it too. But my current job will not give me the chance to do anything else.

I travel alot. And I intend to really grow into any business I want to go into.

So I'll need to go in fulltime

Good day all. i have decided to quit my job and go into the Domestic & Commercial cleaning services business and i need advise from those in the industry.

I've always had that entrepreneurial mindset but my parents' pressure for a white collar job made me look for work and i got one in a telecoms servicing company as a project supervisor (of which the PM has left me to do his job while he still goes home with his fat check while i manage my peanut).

To cut the story short, i've always wanted to be an entrepreneur in the cleaning industry and every passing day in this frustrating job makes me feel like my life is slipping away and a passion inside me dying.

i have gained the knowledge after extensive research and due to my strong interest, i've also gone for training.

i want those in the industry, or those with the knowledge of how the industry thrives in Nigeria to help me with professional advise.

is it a profitable business in an envirinment like lagos? whats the prospect for a start up like me etc...

please i will appreciate if this topic hits frontpage so i can get good advise as i intend quitting my job by december and pursue my dream from next year.

thanks.
why can't you mix both of them, remember! Don't put all your eggs in one basket. ( but in some case you have to gamble it)

Dear Stillchris,

going into entrepreneurship is a very good thing and the life wire towards a better national economic situation. Its a good idea and i assure you, you will not regret it only if you do your home work very well.

you need to identify you target market, your market area, and what do you need to start of.

think about the difference in value you can add to your customers which will differentiate you to other people in the same line of business.

Believe you will succeed, business is not easy to delve into but its worth it with constant discipline.

read books/articles on sustainability in small scale business and ensure your make plans to infuse them into your business.

get your business duly registered before you commence and keep proper accounts from the first day, it really will go a long way in helping you monitor your progress in the business.

NB: let me share a secret with you: make a list of 5 things you can do to make your business a success. write it out and keep it close to you everyday between now and when you intend to commence.

i look forward to sharing your testimony with you.

Thanks.

Don't make hasty decisions, without knowing your clearly defined goals, like me presently I work in a reputable institute, although I would love to be a boss but in life you have to crawl before you walk, walk before you run, and if possible later fly. Use your work experience to learn how businesses are run, then apply it professionally to your dry cleaning business. Like for instance, I am giving myself an exit strategy of 5 years to work, then after I can be on my own.Set a definite plan for yourself before you call it quits.

Wow!! Very uplifting.

I have done all the points you raised and I just spoke with one cleaning service worker to go supervise some jobs during the weekend as my learning process too.

I would have loved to keep my current job as side money, but it will also limit my push for business.

I haven't saved enough but I can start with what I have and I have access to quick loan from next year.

I even intend to have a conglomerate if possible because I have a lot of business ideas I'll love to achieve too. But one step at a time.

That's my dream

@ OP

Follow your heart . As for those advising you to retain your present job , believe you me that is not a good idea , so long as you are certain that you have done your due diligence on the business and that you are not trying to follow another person's dream . To succeed as an entrepreneur and to a larger extent in any life endeavor one chooses you must cut all the bridges ( fall back options ) and channel all your energy towards the cause you're pursuing . The very moment you realized that you have no fall back option you will have no other choice that to put in all your mights to your cause of endeavor and once that is done success will be achieved .

One of the hidden secrets you see about most school dropouts doing better in the business world than their counterparts that passed out through school successfully is that while the former knows that he has no other fall back option when his business fails , he would have no other choice that to do all he could to succeed in his business venture ; whereas the latter knowing that he has a fall back option ( his paper certificate ) will be less focused and limited in taking risk because he believes he has a fall back option - I hope you have heard statement like , if I fail in this business I will dust up my certificate and look for job .

You need to take your time and study your environment

Don't be in a haste to make rash decisions.

By the way your motivation is very wrong.

You want to join the entrepreneur wagon becos of the frustration of your work rather you shld be motivated by providing value and help other businesses succeed

No where in your write up did you mention anything about a business plan. Do you have one? Have investors looked at it in order to give you advice, feedback and funding?
I strongly urge you to start from there
When you create a business plan, it will critically allow you to think about all the things relating to your business idea and determine the feasibility

Whatever business you want to do, i advice that you start it while you still keep your job. That means you have to stretch yourself a bit to keep the business running for a while. Hire competent people and those you can fire. Pls keep your job untilllll your business stands firm. The reality is that Nigerian business environment is very harsh on newly startups especially if you're going to be your own government - generate power, dig borehole, provide security etc for yourself. And this gives account for the failure of more that 85% of new businesses in a year.
Go after your passion but apply wisdom. "Outside" is not that rosy. Goodluck!
