Set things in motion before you resign. Being an entrepreneur is not by proclamation. You need to have the know how and be financially capable. My humble advice...

If you want to become an entrepreneur well congratulations, your life is about to change forever.. But mind you while the reward for success is great, the challenges are nothing compared to being an employee.

If you want to start the cleaning business, find someone who is already succeeding in the business that is willing to mentor and give u valuable biz experience...

Have a workable plan, start small, work hard and grow with time, work on your attitude as a person towards life, work and people particularly cos this is a different ball game entirely from being an employee..

Stop asking every tom and Harry for advices as many of them will only succeed in discouraging you.. Not because you cannot do it, but because they could not..

Reason why I support u becoming an Entrepreneur are simple :
1. U will be fully in control of your life
2. U will not live a life under the shadow of another man
3. It is not the job of your boss to make you rich, but yours
4. If you are not the boss, u cannot get the bulk of the box
5. Entrepreneurship is the surest way to gain financial freedom
6. U cannot have a million dollar acct with a minimum wage mentality

Wish U best of luck....

Whatever business you want to do, i advice that you start it while you still keep your job. That means you have to stretch yourself a bit to keep the business running for a while. Hire competent people and those you can fire. Pls keep your job untilllll your business stands firm. The reality is that Nigerian business environment is very harsh on newly startups especially if you're going to be your own government - generate power, dig borehole, provide security etc for yourself. And this gives account for the failure of more that 85% of new businesses in a year.
Go after your passion but apply wisdom. "Outside" is not that rosy. Goodluck!

Thanks. one of the reasons i like domestic and commercial cleaning sevices is that you can run it from home for a start till you can afford an office. all you need is to have a place to store your equipments.

Do not resign right now, if you have enough capital, start the business, employ people to manage the business for you, make sure you are also monitoring it when you are back from work and weekends.

Then when the business start bumming, it could be after 2-3 years, you can now decide to resign .

My advice
Re: In Need Of A Professional Advice by flyforall: 4:35pm On Aug 13, 2015
1.Demand and supply is key.
2. Have prospective clients
3.Offer discounts like buy 2 get one
You might record no profit the first year but as long as you pay operation costs and meet payroll that's fine but strategies to make next year better
4. Advertise Advertise Advertise
5. Anything is possible if you believe, work hard and smart

I currently manage a cleaning company bro, I tell you it's not easy
There are loads of cleaning companies around and the competition is fierce

And also it is somehow capital intensive to start as you need to buy at least basic machines like dryers, vacuum cleaners, blowers just to mention a few for a start

But I assure u if you get your acts right and know what you are doing as well as establish the right contacts, you would make it

Brace up! It's really great to become an entrepreneur, but please make sure you have saved enough money as contingency when the expected profit is not coming in. Make sure you have at least 4months living expenses to avoid tampering with working capital and profit to expand your business.
I'll also like to advise you to diligently come up with a business plan.
All the best bro.

thanks. i heard like 200k is enough to buy equipments for start up. do you think so?

are there other statea where the business thrives?

i believe there'll always be oppirtunities for startups in the business in a place like lagos because of it's population, wealth and urban development.

so i believe i have a chance if i follow a good marketing plan.

Lastly, would you say it's worth leaving your career/job for?

200k might be ok to get major cleaning machines n equipments like vacuum cleaners blowers mops ladder buckets brooms gloves nose cover soap O2 e.t.c for a start up, but don't be surprised when you get a contract n the client insists u use strictly machines(i have had loads of experience concerning this)

Concerning other states we have a bus so we can afford to do jobs as far away as porthacourt and Imo state as well as south western states

Guy, don't resign!!!

My boss still has her full time job, so I beg you don't resign until the business can sustain itself and pay your bills

On the other hand you might want to save n resign so you can monitor the business yourself but I don't advice u to do that

nice opinion but I feel its better he quit his job because a new business needs its owner to be there so that it could thrive and to also create a philosophy that his employees will follow and believe in so that even if he's not there the employees will follow that same path the boss followed

My friend served at UBA and when he was done, he kept bothering me for job and i asked him, why not go full time into this POP design thing? He complained of lack of finance, no money to eat, bla bl bla, each time he talks about job, i just tell him you own a goldmine, yet you want to be a slave in another man's goldmine..."Even me sef wan quit my job come do business" i often tell him, he couldn't fathom why... 2 years down the lane...he has not stopped thanking me.

I asked him to come check a job, he took him 3 weeks to come check it, why? he was working at one hotel at Sagamu...He now has a total of 15 staff working under him...It was rough at the beginning, but the story is different today.

BE SURE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
PLAN
PLAN AGAIN
PLAN AGAIN AND AGAIN
YOU WILL SUCCEED!!!

Yes I have a business plan. That's why I was considered for a loan.

That's why I'm considering leaving my job so I can put my all into it to enable me grow by God's grace.

It’s a really tough decision you have to make, consider the pros and cons of success and failure, do you also have an emergency fund built up to live on and take care of expenses

I assume you will have a mentor in the business to steady your hand in the infancy days

I wish you the best and I sincerely hope you make it, we need more job creators in this country

It's so encouraging to be your own Boss.
But fear women, they can swallow all your hard earned money & you will pack your slippers and one jeans go village.

good advise. when some men start making money they start thinking women. Some women are wise too, they are so lazy that they have to parasitise and the annoying thing is these men are not wise enough to know this. if u are married pls stick with your wife when u make it big.

You shouldnt have sourced for proffesional advice on nairaland. Many are kill joys. Go on the streets, ask the everyday washman on the street(no matter how small)what the challenges are, do not present yourself as a CEO or something before setting out, look around you and see how you can offer a better service and find out what the present challenges are, get involve in the initial dirty laundry tasks, start with the low paying clienteles first(of course that might depend your choice of location, leverage on the internet and lastly your customer's satisfaction should not be ignored. Wish u the best.
Re: In Need Of A Professional Advice by chlowi(f): 7:24pm On Aug 13, 2015
Op, I will write from experience, 3years ago, I was working at a kitchen company, my pay W's btwn 50k to 70k, well I worked for the company as a sales person and made a lot of contact, as times past, the zeal of being my own boss continued to grow in me, I had a knack for hair making, during my stay at d company, I saved up to a million naira, because all I could think of was to start a beauty parlour of my own.
Well to cut the long story short, I resigned, against all words of advice I got from family and friends to keep my job then, start the business and keep it running for a year, before leaving finally.

I got a place, and all the equipment required for a standard unisex salon, boom, d salon was up and running but within three months, I started to see why I W's advised to keep my job and run the business for a year, the first year was very challenging, because it entailed. Building a strong loyal clientele who would have to get used to patronising and getting used to your location, the cash wasn't coming in as I anticipated.

I wasn't even making up to what I earned after deducting salaries, and paying bills monthly, as a matter of fact nothing, I also had some challenges that required extra finances to settle to boost my business up, but because at that initial stage, there wasn't any other source of income and I as d ceo W's making barely nothing a month, I became stuck , broke and didn't even know where my next rent (house and shop) was to come from.

Behold, after 6months, I was back to the market, hunting for job, I soon got another job! And it became much easier.

Where am I headed? All I am saying in a nutshell is, stay with Ur current job, kick strt ur business, run the 2, give your business 3 years to stabilise, before you finally resign. I only pray, you can jiggle through both.... all the best.

I dont know anything about your proposed business line but about leaving or not leaving your job, bro the decision is yours. Dont let people intimidate you. I left my futureless 43,000 job in april amids dont, wait, never. Today, i have a better paid job with better future prospect! So make up your mind. God will prosper you!

Modified_ The advice above me is also good and priceless. I saw it after posting mine.

Brother before you resign, please try and do the following:
1. Get a partner who will be your boy and be the major person doing the job.
2. Make frantic efforts to get enough customers
3. Make sure your services rendered are quite admirable
4.When it appears that your new business is doing well and it's obvious that your official business is serving as a disturbance, then you can quit and face you entrepreneurial business head-on.
5. Please, know that business is NOT EASY. I mean to tell you that is NOT EASY AT ALL.

All the best brother.

Reading through comments, I observed no one is actually answering his concerns.

My advise is;

You have to decisive and make the decision. Procrastinating the decision will just keep the issue lingering in your mind.

Do you have capital or access to capital? if yes, then what are you waiting for? Secondly, there are investors everywhere you just need to find them and pitch your idea.

Do you strongly believe in your idea? if yes, then commit yourself totally to it and you will surely make it. First year will be difficult no doubt, but if you hang on and pass through the difficult period, you will soon become an employer.

Are you a family man? if not, then this is the best time to leap into entrepreneurship. it is very liberating especially if you know what you are doing.

How much are you receiving as salary? can you save from it to start your business? if yes, save some money which you will use personally so you don't depend on any1

Is entrepreneurship your dream? if yes, then take the leap out of the plane. when you do, you will slowly build your self.

People fail to realize that entrepreneurship is a job and you can even have different businesses. Nigeria has groomed most of us to believe that you can only make a living from a white collar job. But guess what, it is a lie. Having your business at a young age is the best feeling.

People think only of failure. Am not saying that failure is not possible. it is and you will probably fail. if you do, you become tougher and more focused to be successful. Furthermore, just think you are successful in your business. You become a role model to so many.

In summary, assess yourself and make the decision. With Planning, hard work, smart work and determination any business you do will be successful

Hope I helped out.

Peace

Thank you sire for this piece. I have been battling with same issue and this post just gave me all the needed final push to kicks start my new venture.

I appreciate. Thanks once more.

I disagree with u. U are giving this advice becuz he posted it. The beauty of nairaland is you hear different angles to issue, which helps u make decisions.

StillChris, enof suggestions have been giving, mine is this.. PLEASE do not resign, do ur research and den start, ur business will grow to a point that your full attention will be needed, den u car resign. Infact your current work place is also your target market.

You cant resign and start planning how to start ur business...

Dont resign until you are set, d truth is dat, even if it is 30k u are earning, many are lookin for dat job. However if its a low paying job, aim high and look for a better paying job.

Dont let any one kill your determination to start your business... but do it right.

You are taking a good step in the right direction. The best thing you can ever do to yourself in life is following your passion. There is a saying that 'if you don't follow your dream, others will hire you to achieve theirs,Nigerian employers are ready to use you round the clock and still pay you peanuts.Every man's problem is the fear of the unknown.God works with your mindset,be strong and lunch out your business.Meanwhile,to deliver a quality service to your clients, you need to be on ground to supervise, else your employees will do what they like.Contact me for more professional advise on how to lunch out.Good luck! smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley
