In civilised countries currency hawking is a serious money laundering offence. In Australia post offices, banks and registered vendors are the ones responsible for forex. Same as UK It's only.in Nigeria that a Northerner will change £5000 pounds for an individual without any documentation 12 Likes 1 Share |

suyamasta: That's the implication. Not that oil price is even high now to support the Naira. More people are travelling abroad for leisure and business and demand for £/$/Euro increasing. That will further weaken the Naira. 1 Like |

adioolayi: Even a Novice knows that this Emefiele has finally run out of ideas! The BVN issue, l can understand The TSA poliy l can understand The pegging of maximum Dollar in a forex denominated Debit/Credit Card, l can understand as well but this new BDC's policy seems "reactionary" Most of the things he wrote there are just "muscling". Only Emefiele himself can come out to tell us what the objectives of these rash of pronouncements are. Buhari, time to let off this Emefiele! he has over-stayed his welcome Lastpage! 3 Likes |

Everybody is castigating Emefiele but this is part of the obvious change. Doing things in the right and legal way. Which sane country do people hawk Forex at street corners, no registration, no guidelines. This going to introduce hardship in getting Forex but in the long run that is the way to go. 10 Likes |

The CBN is trying all possible means to regulate a free market which in completely impossible. It's either we operate a free market or closed economy. Regulating a free market is like stopping the flowing of an ocean, it will always find another route. CBN can determine the exchange rate of Naira to Dollar in inter-bank and not in street trading. Over regulating the exchange rates will only send wrong signal to foreign investors that Nigeria is far from free market economy. 7 Likes 1 Share |

You are wrong. Every countries in the world has a street trading with little or no regulation from the government. What the CBN should do is make Dollars accessible to genuine buyers and discourage people from patronizing the black market. Fixing a limit on how much i dollars i can spend daily is an encouragement for people to patronize black market. Ferdinandu: 2 Likes |

Ferdinandu: First, l agree that there is no need to "Hawk" forex at street corners but l do understand that those Mallams are just like "marketers" who are staffers of a particular registered BDC Company. What needs to be done is to ask that the actual transactions take place in a registered office. That is, when the "marketer" gets a customer off the streets, he should lead that customer to their registered office and the transaction takes place in such office. Finito! Again, asking BDC's to close all branches is like asking all Banks to close down all their branches and operate ONLY from their Head office! What can be more stewpid than that? Is Emefiele telling us that if a BDC has its HQ at Abuja, l need to travel to Abuja, to exchange a paltry $300, for example? Why cant l change it at their branch office nearest to me? What is that directive supposed to achieve? You dont cut-off your nose, simply to spite your face! It is senseless and counter-productive!! What we need is more "intelligence-led" monitoring, not some rash of archaic policies that lead now-where. Lastpage! 9 Likes 1 Share |

Seun: The CBN governor is not up to the task but it does not help that he is working under a regime where the president has ruled out devaluation. Presidents have no business saying things which undermine central bank independence. Policy ineptitude will prove the bane of the Buhari era as was the case with the first Buhari regime in the 80s. What you are witnessing is slow-motion economic implosion. Only an oil price rally will save us. 4 Likes |
