Thanks a million for your replies.

I thought it'd be too late to apply for fall 17, since we're already in Jan 17. Also most of the top 100 schools in Physics (US News), that I feel I have higher prospects of securing admission to, have ended registration.

I don't know if I can still meet the deadline for some others, since one'll still have to send transcripts to the schools and that could take a while. I was wondering of going for Spring 18 but don't know if funding will be available.

I'm in a pickle here.

From what I've observed, most schools provide funding for students who meet the fall deadline. I wouldn't advise anybody to apply for admission in spring or any other time.

As for your transcript, I know most schools in the U.S ask for unofficial transcripts. That is, a scanned copy of your transcript to be uploaded to your application on the school's website. Your school will only need to send OFFICIAL transcripts after you've been given admission in the school you applied to.

The following schools have their fall deadlines late in January, early February or later in the year. Check to see if they offer your course:

Kent State University
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
University of Tennessee
Georgia State University

All the best.

The GRE is one of the many requirement for Graduate admission in the US, Canada and lots of other developed countries. For Job applications, i think SHL and GMAT are more suitable.

Hi sedulousQueen,

I'm considering a PhD in areas like Business and Public Policy, Public Affairs, Strategy and Management, Policy Studies, and Policy Analysis etc.

I'm also considering countries like the US, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, and Belgium.

I was also considering going for a PhD in Finance, but it seems I'll need much more than an MBA to undertake it, especially when my first degree is in the sciences. However, you can try HEC Paris, France. They don't just offer a tuition-waiver for all their PhDs, they also provide monthly stipends, and you get to enjoy these benefits the moment you're admitted. However, I'm not sure they offer something in Energy Finance and Risk though. You can check German schools as well.

But why Energy Finance and Risk? Do you have degrees in areas like Petroleum Engineering, Energy Economics, Environment Sciences, or you have experience working in any of those fields?

Abeg, show me the way oooooo

It does not. As long as you pay the application fee for both. Admission decisions are made my departments not necessarily the general graduate admissions board. In fact, what the latter do is to see if you meet all the stipulated criteria set by the committee and then they forward the application to the department.
Thank you Scholastica16 for the reply.

Hi all, anyone in the house giving GRE this January (Like the Indians would say lol). How is prep? I am feeling cautiously optimistic. I just need to make sure I apply all I have learnt during the course of my prep and don't allow any exam jitters to get to me. Can't wait to get it done over with. The last two weeks has been arduous. Any final advice from GRE veterans would be appreciated.

Present Sir grin
I'm scheduled to take the exam this month. Both GRE n TOEFL ( 10 days interval). About preparation, I have been painstakingly trying to practice at least 2 quant sections daily for the next few days leading to my test. For verbal, I've decided to leave that in God's hands.

Because, correct me if I'm wrong, the verbal section of the GRE is a test of skills that take time to build; The luxury of which I do not have.
Don't get me wrong, my verbal has never gone below 154 in practice test. But I'll give it a boost and see what the next few days will yield.

Take this with a pinch of salt. Deadlines at Kent state university and almost every other is course specific. Like the deadline for PhD bus admin was early December. I tried to apply there but, I couldn't meet up.

Have you taken full length practice test? There are two in the ETS book I posted in the previous page, then another 2 in Powerprep. Manhattan, crunchprep, Kaplan also have free tests. As with verbal, I wouldn't want to destabilize you since your exam is close, but I think it is possible to improve in RC, by following strategies in books. All the answers are present in the passage, one just as to know where to look. Learning some common GRE vocab can really help with Sentence completion and equivalent. Also real GRE sentence completion depends a lot on context and much less so on vocab. You might want to use official materials from ETS and maybe watch Magoosh videos if you have it. Don't just give up on it.

Thanks Time2Smile.
I have taken about 3 full length test yet. I still have access to Kaplan 6 full length, magoosh and then Manhattan full length tests. I'll take at least 10 of such test in the days leading up to the exams. I the first power prep 2 test when I started off studying, I'll take the last just before my exam.
I'm grateful with the concern expressed and it goes without saying that I'm galvanized. I've so not given up on verbal, but I just don't expect much from it is all. I'd be more than happy if I can cross the 160 threshold. I recently began using Princeton verbal review, and I must confess the strategies in that book does wonders. Before my exposure to those strategies, I have always haggled all options in my head without using a scratch paper and more often than not, that strategy is void. Since I adopted Princeton's method of Elimination and use of scratch paper, I have taken a huge chunk of work off my brain, freeing it up to make informed choices.
All said and done, I'll still try to study for the verbal, who knows, it just might pay off.
Thanks and bless up

Hello Bro..Thanks so much for the other day. The materials you gave me have been very helpful.

I wish you all the best in your exams and every other aspect of your application.

I hope you have already decided a list of 4 schools that you want your results sent to ?

Then please @all, I am toying with the idea of quiting my job to focus on my application for Ph.D Electrical Engineering in the USA.

I will be looking for funding too and here is my profile.

B.Tech Elect 3.78/5.0
M.Eng Elect 4.1/5.0

How much would you advise i have on savings ?

I mean how much will be considered sufficient to prosecute the applications up to visa application considering I am depending on funding and I havent written the Gre and Toefl yet ?

I'll skip all sugarcoating and just cut to the chase.
Do not under any circumstance quit your job before you're sure of your plans to leave for study. Take your time, take the GRE n TOEFL, research schools and apply. With a profile like that, you're good.
wish you success.
Bless up

Do not quit your job please. Since you are applying for fall 2018, You have at least 10 months to prepare you application since most early application starts by October. What you need is a disciplined schedule to study for both the GRE and TOEFL. I know your work can be hectic, But consistent study for 2 hours a day plus weekend would be enough.

You would be surprised how quickly everything adds up.
About 100,000 for GRE and TOEFL , App fee to maybe 4 schools ranging from $60 to $100 each, Transcript fee from Nigeria University (My undergrad school requires 50,000 Naira to send transcripts abroad. One of the reasons I don't apply to schools that require hard copy of official transcript). Sevis fee, visa fee, International passport (If you don't have one yet) and other sundry fees
However, on an encouraging note, even if we take all these expenses to be 400,000 Naira, That is less than a month stipend once someone lands in the U.S. So I would say let's do this. Yes We can.

I plan to send the scores to
1) KAUST
2) University of Toronto, Canada. (They require 80th percentile in both Quant and Verbal). A top school that I really like and it was one of the reasons I decided to write GRE.
3) University of Houston (Deadline is February 1 with guaranteed funding for PhD)
4) I am presently researching a suitable school with late deadline, Though considering University of Maryland, College Park but their application deadline is January 17, and the school seems very competitive and late submission might jeopardize my chances.
