Information is very pertinent, thanks for the motivation you gave, in addition to what you said I would like to add that a top GRE score is good, it helps one stand out in the pack but only GRE doesn't make a good application, the overall application does. Be informed, research schools, get an academic fitted resume with required experience, get a strong sop to bolster you choice and show your clear goals and direction. Establish good communication with the grad coord to know about funding, space, and deadlines or extensions.

A minimum GRE score is usually set for programs but funding from your department most times depends on its availability and your program. A 340 might not mean being funded.


The importance of a high gre score can't be over emphasized, it opens doors and creates better options

I still dont understand how to answer Assumption, Strengthening and Weakening a statement questions. I always miss it. Thats 3 marks away cry

That part is technical. Plus they kinda suck the time you don't have.

You might as well skip it, or guess along. It probably won't hurt your marks in the end.

That's one of the easy parts of verbal. I'd advice you to watch magoosh video on paragraph argument. It's easy and to the point. I wish you success

I greet you all, wishing you a prosperous new year! Its my first time on this forum. I could see your selfless contributions to each other's progress. God will not leave you unrewarded! I wish I joined this thread before taking my standardized tests and selecting schools. However, I still draw maximum courage from you all especially SirRiddy, Danja, Toppiipii, Pennystate, Drhopefully, Scholarstical, to mention but a few.
Although am not attempting to justify myself for the low GRE scores, I suffered a stomach upset on the day of the test. Intermittently, I held my stomach while taking the test. For about 10 minutes I couldn't make a reasonable introduction to my AWA Issue topic. I was almost crying on my seat, saying to myself "upon all the reading?" Eventually, it was 310 (Verbal=152; Quant.=158) and AWA=3.5. I took the TOEFL 10 days later and the devil's younger brother still followed me with a runny stomach that morning. After the reading and listening parts, I asked one of the proctors if I could cancel and be rescheduled but he said no. I prayed and finished up. But I cried after the test because it just reminded me of how I finished up my degree exams from a sick bed. 11 days later I surprisingly saw a score of 100.
Although I've applied to 3 schools (KSU, Emory and Rochester), am still thinking whether to rewrite. Am worried that these may not get me funding. Please I need your suggestions. I'm seeking admission and funding into PhD Statistics. My academic profile is B.Sc 4.54/5 and M.Sc 4.87/5 with 3 research publications, though I don't know the American equivalent on 4-point scale.
I'd like to start preparing again in earnest if am to retake the test(s). Please help a brother. Am so grateful and privileged to join you guys. Thanks and God be with you.

1. Is C you are right.
2. If you substitute K=1 for a1, K=2 for a2 etc you'd notice a pattern. a1 is 1-1/2, a2 is 1/2-1/3, a3 is 1/3-1/4, a4 is 1/4-1/5

Without wasting much time if you add a1+a2+a3+a4 you'd notice that you'd have 1-1/2+1/2-1/3+1/3-1/4+1/4-1/5...which shows that 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 can cancel out leaving 1-1/5 as the answer. Thus, we have identified a pattern we can use for a1+a2.....a100

We would simply find out what a100 is and take the last term of it. That is, since a100 is 1/100-1/101 we can simply remove the 1/100 (knowing it would have cancelled out when adding all the terms).

So we are left with 1-1/101 which is 101/101-1/101 which is 100/101

NB: This is a question of high difficulty therefore one is advised to skip it and come back to it if time remains as it could waste your time if you don't figure out the pattern early enough.

3. Since the square has a perimeter of 40 it means 2(X+X)=40 therefore X is 10. Which means one side of the square is 10. Now the second square T is inscribed inside S so the 4 points of T must touch the edges of S. I hope you can imagine what I am trying to say. Anyways this means that the diagonal of T will be equal to the length of one of the sides of S which is 10.

Now we know that since the diagonal of the square T is 10, each side will be 5root2. Therefore the area will be 5root2 squared which is 50. So that answer is 50. I hope you understand.

I was at jkk to take toefl this morning. I must say the real exam was a little bit more difficult than I expected.
The questions for both the listening and reading sections wer a little bit confusing, infact the only section I found very easy was the writing section.
I used roughly five days to prepare for the test and from my experience, I dnt thnk it requires a lot of time, its just about having a strategy for answering questions (Notefull videos really helped). So I'm thankful I didnt spend so much time studying.
I just hope I get up to my target score.

Hello House. I wrote the GRE sometime in 2012 and it's due to expire July this year. Is it better I just re-write, seeing that the result is far back, even though it's still valid? I want to pursue a PhD in Environmental studies (BSc Industrial Chem, First Class and MSc in Energy/Environmental Mgt, merit). Being that most funding opportunities are for fall semester, rather than spring or summer + I'm fretting about having to read for the GRE, what advice do you have for me please?

Oga, congrats on your 'WOW' score, I was aiming for 320 but you've just made increase my target to 330 smiley.

Pls at bolded, are you in anyway referring to the stipend that you would receive as a TA or GA?

Do not quit your job please. Since you are applying for fall 2018, You have at least 10 months to prepare you application since most early application starts by October. What you need is a disciplined schedule to study for both the GRE and TOEFL. I know your work can be hectic, But consistent study for 2 hours a day plus weekend would be enough.

You would be surprised how quickly everything adds up.
About 100,000 for GRE and TOEFL , App fee to maybe 4 schools ranging from $60 to $100 each, Transcript fee from Nigeria University (My undergrad school requires 50,000 Naira to send transcripts abroad. One of the reasons I don't apply to schools that require hard copy of official transcript). Sevis fee, visa fee, International passport (If you don't have one yet) and other sundry fees
However, on an encouraging note, even if we take all these expenses to be 400,000 Naira, That is less than a [/b]month stipend[b] once someone lands in the U.S. So I would say let's do this. Yes We can.

I plan to send the scores to
1) KAUST
2) University of Toronto, Canada. (They require 80th percentile in both Quant and Verbal). A top school that I really like and it was one of the reasons I decided to write GRE.
3) University of Houston (Deadline is February 1 with guaranteed funding for PhD)
4) I am presently researching a suitable school with late deadline, Though considering University of Maryland, College Park but their application deadline is January 17, and the school seems very competitive and late submission might jeopardize my chances.
