SHOEMAKERS in Ariaria market have expressed worry over the state government’s plan to bring a foreign investor who would produce shoes in Aba to compete with local shoe-makers. Some shoemakers who spoke with Vanguard in Aba yesterday in separate interviews said that the arrangement would strip them of their little income and make them jobless.

Ikedi Ohaeto, said that the government may benefit from the taxes the investor would pay but noted that the investor would in turn take the made-in-Aba shoe market away from them. He said ,”It is not fit for Governor Okezie Ikpeazu who is championing made-in-Aba products to shop for an investor from abroad who would be a huge beneficiary of his effort which is supposed to support local and indigenous production. If the Chinese arrives with his machines and coupled with cheap man-power from Nigeria, how can we compete with him producing with no machines but bare hands?

“I am not too sure that Aba shoe-making industry will survive long after the Chinese arrives to establish his shoe factory here. We need foreign investors but not in this way or this sector in Abia”, he said. Chinbueze Onyeizu said that the governor should change his mind on bringing the Chinese to Aba to produce shoes that would compete with their own in durability and cost. He said that rather than bring the Chinese to increase shoe production in Aba, government should buy machines for them to boost their production and give them time to repay the cost of the machines.

Onyeizu noted that the idea of bringing the Chinese investor in the area of shoe production with machines to compete with people producing with bare hands would be counter-productive for the Aba shoe industry. Another shoe-maker, Ken Ora said that it would seem that the governor does not want to complete the Umukalika Industrial City that would house the Shoe, Finished Leather Products and Garment Clusters at Obingwa.

He argued that for the Industrial city to be without machines would be like talking of sending a man to work without equipment. “If the shoe-makers that would be located at Umukalika do not have machines, how can they compete with the Chinese coming with machines and other advantages?Again, the machines we need cannot be purchased individually by us because we do not have the funds to do that and so we look up to government to help us” he said.

According to him ”And if Abia state government would want to buy us machines and recoup the money later does it make business sense to bring in a Chinese competitor whose impact would make recouping their fund harder”, he queried. The state government had April 2017 secured a $1.5 billion deal for Mr Zhang Huarong’s Huajian Shoe Industry based in Dongguan, Guangzhuo, China to establish its factory in Aba. The government had said that the Chinese investor’s presence would engender competition among shoe-makers in Aba but did not say what the state may loose from the shoe factory deal.

It is high time these Aba coblers that called themselves shoe makers, learnt to use good gum for making their wares. How does one buy a paire of shoes at 3000 naira, and still have to sew them? You can not even dance confidently with aba-made-shoes.
Aba boys are great and talented, but should start using good gums for their shoes.

Nonsense. These crybabies should see the new entrant as an opportunity to up their game. I thought they said Igbo people don't mind competition on their own turf, so why the lamentation?? They should look at the bright side and the benefits of such huge FDI into the state economy like up-to-date knowledge transfer, technology transfer, employment effects, improved IGR, amongst other spillover benefits.

There's no doubt it will engender healthy competition between the indigenous manufacturers and the foreigners. Kudos to the abia government...

The fears and reasoning of the traders are logical but it is not correct in practice. Take for example, when big white farmers came on board, such fears were entertained by the local farmers, however, it is crystal clear that with a large market like ours and so many factors that drag market share including product bias , no company can successfully run a complete monopoly in some goods, not even in services.
There is this million dollar Shonghai farms and other large poultry farms with the Whites as principal partners, many thought their entrance into the market will stifle the subsistence farmers, but it didn't. Instead, the high yield technologies and systematic approach they came with are in the hands of the locals today, less cycle time, more turnover, disease resistant spp, improved vaccines, relatively cheaper broods, more accessible and better feeds manufactured by the bigger companies. Moreover, the meat market target of huge farms are the export and big enterprises like fastfoods and hotels, the frozen food chains which were hitherto controlled by Benin Republic. The local farmer retains his market and at a higher profit margin with the technology made available by the White farmers.
Similarly, the shoe manufacturers will learn and get technology leaks (the painstaking works of many years) for free. The raw materials like high quality leathers, soles, gums, pins, packages and 'branding' will likely be manufactured here by the Chinese who I know will not like to be wasting cash on duty for things a few line of robots and machines will produce in minutes The people that will be affected are the importers of these items .
Again the product preference, like many will not like meats believed to have gone through genetic modifications and steroid manipulations, many will have strong bias for robot made shoes as against handmade shoes.
Till they come, the fears are coming too early!

They shouldn't fret.... Instead they should sort out means of which the incoming transfer technology will be of benefit to their locals and indigenes.

Abia State University should start a part time course on SHOE MAKING and give them required education along with their talents. They will learn procedure to apply for loan, bring in partners and build big SHOE COMPANY.

The state government should not make aba another dumping ground for stupid investors. There are some sectors he should allow the indigenes man themselves and not spoil their businesses for them.

You see our lives for gutter? All the rich igbo men could not invest in the aba boys by buying them quality and modern day shoe making equipment that will enable them make quality shoe. The evil politicians will just continue to steal money and refuse to use it for reasonable things. Now chinese man don come for china come set up better shoe making company. Meanwhile there's nothing special in the shoes the chinese company will make. Give the aba boys the same equipment and they'll perfect the shoes in terms of quality and finishing.

Igbos and own goals. grin grin grin

Same governor that was championing made in Aba product

What happened to providing soft loans to the Aba boys?

Or couldn't he have established an institute that would engage in research and development, training and capacity building for the young shoe-making entrepreneurs in Aba?

Nnamdi Kanu and IPORK would not see anything wrong in this.

Thank God it was not the FG that initiated such plan else we for don dey hear victimization wailing
