Hi, I would be visiting the US (NY & DC) this summer. I land JFK on the 16th of August to be precise. Please I would like more info on accommodation (I'm traveling with my son) and transportation in NY. Also how do I book the museum tour since the white house is too late now? Please advise me accordingly thanks.

wanderlustian:
Hubby wanted us to take a Taxi... who me Take a taxi? In New York? What happened to the subway?

The last time I personally took a taxi from JFK was in 2013, and I paid almost $100 just to Bellerose, in Queens. After then, I said 'Never again". Anyone else, I will hop in, as long as you are paying... but hubby caught wanderlust, and if he wanted to explore, he has to go the whole 9 yards wanderlust style!

So, we took the airtrain to Jamaica Station, and bought metro cards for $1, and topped up with $10 each. A ride from JFK terminating at Jamaica is $5, but within the airports, from terminal to terminal is free. Then we connected the MTA subway to Penn Station. From Penn Station, we took another train to the Ferry heading to Staten Island, where I had booked a really cheap accommodation option. If you had read any of my previous thread, you would know I'm a sucker for cheap accommodation cc @originalsly grin grin grin. Don't worry Bro, I researched Staten Island and saw that it was one of the safest places to be in New York. Hubby could not understand why of all the places in New York, I had to get a place across the water! grin grin grin

Did I mention the ferry to Staten Island is free?

So, In total, I guess we spent $16 to get to our destination.

The other option would have been to take the NYC airporter to Penn Station, but it was $18 per adult! Hell No!

We got into New York just in time to see the sun set upon Lady Liberty... It was just breath taking!

I think some cities are unnecessarily expensive, like New York and Chicago. New Jersey is comparatively cheaper. And I'm sure some other states will be cheaper. But compared to Europe last year, I guess this trip has cost us a lot more.

NY is exactly like Lagos, everyone is trying to hustle you and milk you out because you are a tourist, if you don't shine your eyes well, they will success.

My bobo said he will give anything to have Eba and Egusi soup right now! grin grin grin LMAO! We've been hungry since the day we left Nigeria.
i guess because land transport in the EU is very cheap and efficient. Even air travel is very cheap too. i miss the flybes and ryan air in UK.
Naija restaurant shouldnt be hard to locate in NY.

It would be nice if you can create a blog for your trip. The breakdown of cost, movements and how to get cheap accommodation would help alot. I follow Jubril Agoro (passport heavy) on facebook and youtube, but his stuffs are oyinbo centric...lol

Accommodation. .. don't know about DC. .... how long would be your stay in NYC?.... what level of accommodation? ....5 Star Hotel standards?!...executive suite?!.... or just looking for a pretty safe, cheap but comfortable place? On transportation.... $32 for a 7 day unlimited Metro pass....use to jump on the bus or train for 7 days counting from the first day used. 30 day pass... $121. You can get to almost any destination in the city via bus/train (subway)..... the reason why most NYC residents don't own cars.

I've been MIA for a while.

Its not easy setting up a new business coupled with part time work and being a mom. The lil lady is a handful. She's going to be 2 soon. Time really does fly.

So guess who caught Wanderlust? Lol!

Yup, all these stories and pictures finally got to my husband and he's decided he is visiting the United States this summer, even though at first he wanted to go without me... Like really?

Anyways, we are going together, yipeee! And I'm starting this thread to chronicle the trip. We leave next week.

Stay tuned

Originalsly has done justice to this. I didn't book the museum tour, the Congresswomans pa did that for me. But I guess you can book on Expedia.com

As per accommodation, I stayed quite far away from the city to save on costs, NY hotels are very pricey.

Thanks. We would be in NY for 5 days. A comfy 3star hotel or something cheap and safe would be fine. Our accommodation in DC is sorted already. With regards to transport does a 7 year old pay the full $32 for the metropass or travel free with me?.

Just be careful oh. Its better to take the cab with your money than to try those subways in NY especially when you are a tourist.

The 7 day pass would do. Kids are free. The pass is actually a card...like bank card.... swipe to ride on the bus/train. Hmmm....3 star hotel!...that's a pocket burner!...but you muse know what you can afford!

If you are travelling with family, it will be difficult navigating with public transport, esp when no one is experienced. I learnt the NY system a few years ago on a solo trip so it was easier this time.

Its kinda a lot to take in. I had to patiently teach hubby all the signs, colours , numbers, letters etc.

Usually you buy the MetroCard after you come off the air train in Jamaica station.
