On that polymer note?

Which currency do you know that has value and is printed using polymer notes?
you can't really say for sure my brother as you haven't been to nooks and crannies of the world. there might just be one country with high value of exchange rate compare to other country in question. and with regards to whether polymer note is used for high value currency, you only know what you know, there might just be one & anything is possible under technology

More likely they are going to print fake notes maybe the currency of another country. They have a way of cleaning the notes and then printing over it so there could be high value notes in another country using same sized paper
taking ur side of d matter #50 as the highest denomination in polymer will equal how much to that same multiple

The amount is more than one can take out of the country without declaring it. In US, the person is not arrested, only the money is seized.

No crime was committed. He should sue and make some more money. Nigeria never misses an opportunity to embarrass herself before the world.

You're very wrong sir. There is a limit to the amount of cash you can travel with without declaring the money. And in Nigeria there is a limit to the amount of local currency you can export out of the country. I think the limit may be as low as 5k or 10k.

Smart.

The chinese are big on forgery. The polymer will be cleaned up and another country's currency on same dimension will be minted with the polymer.

For those questioning why he is arrested. He is travelling with amount above the legally allowed PTA/BTA. Make una try dey travel now.

It's funny how many are commenting "no crime committed" with such confidence. You better know the rules before customs seize the money you were hoping to use to take a cab when you return from obodo oyinbo. grin

With Chinese invoved anything is possible, 300,000 is less than 1000 dollars so what his interrogators will focus more is what his purpose of having the money, because u can't spend naria in China.

This generalization is too broad. If there is reason to arrest they will arrest. Arrest is also part of investigation not only prosecution. People may be arrested for questioning if there are reasonable grounds

This is mere conjecture. As law enforcement, it is not your duty to 'foresee' a crime before it is committed, without any evidence whatsoever other than mere suspicion, and proceed to arrest somebody.

Meanwhile, the law says that you are only required to declare the amount you are traveling with if it is more than $10,000 or its Naira equivalent.

This is barbaric and shameful of us as Nigerians. It is a joke.

N300K is approximately $900. Imagine the DEA or FBI in the United States arresting a Nigerian travelling from New York to Lagos, simply because he was 'caught' with genuine $900 - in whatever denomination. How would YOU react to that?

Conjecture?

Actually what is conjecture is your "naira equivalent" assumption. There are restrictions on Nigeria currency export . This last time I checked it was 5000 naira.
http://www.iatatravelcentre.com/NG-Nigeria-customs-currency-airport-tax-regulations-details.htm

We all take a lot more ignorantly but there are striict regulations on exporting our currency dating back to the Biafra War and adjusted during Buhari's military government. There is alot of background to Naira export restriction which you will do well to inform yourself about

One may speculate on why he is taking the money but the circumstances are at least suspicious to any person who has travelled through an airport and the security services have a right to question him as to why he chose such a large volume of paper currency .
If a Chinese man tried leaving the US with $5000 in 5 cent coins and he was detected do you imagine they would just wave him along on his merry way without investigation?

Your self hating psychological preparedness to call us barbaric needs to be toned down. To any trained security operative this is very suspicious activity that is probably criminal or some kind of espionage/intelligence activity and needs to be questioned and scrutinized

Our rules require anything over 5000 naira to be declared . It has nothing to do with the rule that applies to dollars etc.

They are completely different rules.

Who knows maybe this exportation of our currency might just make it have more vakue .
CBN needs to start printing more of the N5 note and let's start selling . Maybe they will pay N100 naira for the N5 naira note since they have found out our made in Nigeria N5 has spiritual value to their existence

So you do not see any crime having such denomination of currency? Don't know that will use it to print another currency? The original paper is what he is looking for as that will pass any form of security.

One thing seems clear to me. Given the recent technologicaal advances of China ; They have the capacity to recycle those notes and add significant value to them. Does the country have the right to stop that?
It is no different from exporting low face value coins in huge amounts so as to melt them for their valuable metal content

I do not believe this was an innocent enterprise The issue at stake is that Bank notes are government property and in the hands of more knowledgeable countries can hurt out interests. Our intelligeeence agencies need to raise their game to learn what these folk are up to

My thought exactly, polymer banknotes can be bleached and reprinted to another currency or denomination, as the only visible sign of authenticity to the eye is the originality of the paper. You can read up more about it here
