Episode 1

Two hearts joined together in love become one. They beat and function as one. They become inseparable, not even by death. Love is the greatest force in the world. It has turned kings into slaves, slaves into kings, warriors into cowards and cowards into warriors. Love is like alcohol, once one get intoxicated, they become unable to control their actions or behavior. Love is crazy, love is blind, love is divine, love is life.
Thousands of years ago, years after Iduh, the man considered to be the father of the Idoma people had lived, in a place called Ogobia, a beauty goddess lived. Her name was Obiye. She was an embodiment of beauty; she was tall and lean with large brown eyes and long lashes. Her nose was long and her lips full. Her cheekbones were high and lying above her eyes were neatly trimmed high-arching browns; all these features were in a beautiful oval-shaped face which sat on an elongated neck. Her skin was flawless raven-black; a match with the colour of her shoulder length hair. Her bosom were full and her waist though not tiny were neither fat. Her hips were round; the beads which she always wear sat perfectly on them. Her hips swing from side to side whenever she walks, making the beads dance in rhythmic with her hips. She was a beauty to behold.
Her labor lasted the whole night and at the first cock crow, she came into the world. As if the skies were waiting for her arrival, they opened their mouths and poured down rain which lasted for two days. On the third day, a tiny yellow sun shined in the sky, illuminating the earth. The intercourse between the sun and the still wet earth gave birth to fair weather. She grew up to become a beautiful lady, envied by most ladies her age and eyed by young men whom woo her for marriage. Kings, warriors and many influential people asked to court her but she rejected them. She was in love with someone, a man many saw as a coward but to her he is a warrior. She was in love with Enenche and don’t care if he was a coward.
The sun was approaching towards the west, indicating it interest of going to sleep. People were already coming back from the farm. Obiye ran to the thatched kitchen near her father’s hut and fetched the big clay pot. She balanced it on their head. She joined her friends who were waiting outside the house and they began walking towards the stream. The topic of Enenu, a woman who was caught red-handed on bed with her lover by her husband came up. The woman was made to swear in front of the Alekwu, the spirit of the dead ancestors and died a week after while her lover went scout free.
"Women have no regard in this society.” Owole said when Igbe brought up the topic.
“What do you expect from a society where men ruled and make the rule if not subjugation”. Obiye chipped in, adjusted her bosom.
“I wish a day will come when women will also have a say in the society.” Igbe uttered concerned.
“If only wishes are horses.” Obiye murmured. "Will the subjugation ever stop?"
“The world is wicked.” Owole said and sighed.
"No, men are wicked not the world and all men are the same.”Igbe objected.
"I disagree with you. My Enenche is not like other men." Obiye said defensively.
"Hmm. I know you will never agree to anything when Enenche is involve in it." Igbe teased smiling.
"I agree men are wicked but not all of them.” She clarified.
“Well, you are right but…”
“There is no but.” Obiye interrupted Owole.
They arrived at the stream just then and greeted the people they met at the stream them proceed inside the stream. They brought down the pots from their heads and bent them inside the water. They helped themselves put the pots on their heads and left. The women around stopped what they were doing and watched as walk, in a dance like manner.
A different topic was brought up on their way home. Obiye bid them farewell when they arrived in front of her house. She entered the house while her friends walked to their houses; few meters ahead. She brought down the pot from her head and hurried to the barn. She came back seconds later with two yam seeds and dropped them. She went and swept the kitchen then made fire. She placed a black clay pot on top of the three stones then poured water and covered the pot. She went and started peeling the yam. She sliced the yam into tiny bite and poured them into the already steaming water. She washed her hands then entered her mother, her elder brothers Obogwu and Ocheme sat with their father. Her sisters, Elakeche and Oganya sat in a cornet.
“This year’s harvest is going to abundant.” Ocheme said amid chewing.
“Why did you say so?” Obogwu asked dipping a bite of yam in the oil.
“The rain came down early this season.” Ocheme
“That is true but it can also mean two much rain which may affect the crops.” Obogwu said.
Obiye turned and looked at her brothers then her father. She knew he will quarrel them about talking while eating.
“How many times have I told you not to talk while eating?” their father asked frowning.
No one said anything again. Obiye smiled and continued eating. Their father belief in core discipline among his children and he is seen as a symbol of authority. The family finished their meal and the two younger girls took the plates away. All the children with the exclusion of Obiye went to where their father was for the usual night tales. Obiye sat on the raffia mat beside her mother starring at the stars in the sky.
"Where do you always go to every night? Don’t think I am a fool, I am awake all the nights you go out.” Her mother said calmly.
Obiye turned sharply and looked at her mother, she have been caught! "I… I… I use to …I…” she stammered. Her mother shook her head.
“What will happen if someone see you sneaking out? What will people say? Don’t you think of our family’s reputation?”
“I am sorry Enem. It won’t happen again. I go out to see Enenche.” She murmured, head down.
"Can’t you see him during the day? why in the night?”.
“I am sorry Enem.”
They didn’t say a word to each other again. They sat in silence until it was time for bed. She lay on the mat, her face to the roof thinking, Enenche must be waiting for her by now. She kept tossing and turning on the mat until sleep took her. In her sleep, she dreamt they got married and gave birth to two children.

Episode 2

The sun was up high in the sky; it was mid day. He raised his head and wiped sweat from his forehead then bent down and continued making heaps. He stopped and dropped the hoe then walked to under the big mango tree and sat down. He wiped the stream of sweat on his face with his palm then took the cover from the calabash and drank from the enyi, a drink made from guinea corn. He relaxed for a while then returned to making heaps. He was deep in work that he didn’t saw someone coming from behind. A tap on his shoulder made him jerk up and threw the hoe he was working with away. He turned to see his friend Omaba laughing hard.
“You scared me Omaba.” Enenche said breathing heavily.
“You’re such a coward Enenche.” Omaba sneered.
“I was trying to make sure I am safe.” Enenche defend himself.
“By being timid? Save the explanation to someone who doesn’t know you.” Omaba utter and chuckled
“Did you come to my farm to insult me?”Enenche asked. He was already loosing his cold.
“I am sorry my friend, I came to ask if your enyi is still remaining.”
Enenche stated into his friend’s eyes and shook his head. The easiest way to get to Omaba is through his stomach. Unlike Enenche, Omaba had courage but food is his weak point.
“There is little Enyi left in the calabash.” Enenche pointed to the calabash sitting on the sand under the tree.
“Thank you my friend you’re one of a kind.” Omaba beamed. “Let’s go and rest under the tree.”
“Can’t you see I am working?” Enenche raised his left brows.
“Too much of work is not good." Omaba said putting his hand on Enenche’s shoulder.
They walked and sat under the tree. Omaba finished the remaining enyi. They walked until it was almost sunset. Omaba left for his farm while Enenche did some little work before leaving for home. On his way home, the thought of Obiye occupied his mind. He had waited for her the previous night but she didn’t show up. He pushed the thoughts that came to his mind almost immediately they came.
Obiye stood up and tiptoed out of the hut; she doesn’t care if her mother was awake. She needed to see Enenche that night. The moon hid among the cloud, making every where dark. She hurried towards where they usually meet, occasionally turning back to see if anyone was on sight. This will be the last time; not the last time she will see Enenche but the last day she will sneak out in the night to see him. She won’t want to soil the reputation her family had built for many years. A hand came out from the bushes and drew her inside. She open her mouth to shout but the hand covered it.
“It is I, my love” Enenche said smiling. She let out a sigh of relief. “You scared me Enenche.”
“I am sorry my love, I didn’t mean to scare you.” He said apologetically.
“It is ok.”
“I brought something for you.” He whispered smiling.
“What is that?” He opened the animal skin bag around his waist and brought out something wrapped in banana leaf and handed it to her. She hurriedly unwrapped the leaf and her face lite up immediately. She rose up her head and looked at him.
“Ikpakpa koncha! Thank you.” She said beaming.
She wiped her hand on her wrapper and started eating. He stared fixedly at her smiling as she eats. He would trade the world just to have her. She finished eating and threw the leaf away.
“I waited for you last night but you didn’t come.”
“Yes, a problem came up.”
“A problem?” he asked. "What problem? His heart started beating fast.
“Don’t panic. Enem knows I come out to see you every night and she was against it.” He sighed, closing his eyes. That is not a problem to him.
“Then we have to create another time of seeing each other.”
“Yes the day time.”
“I will be coming back from the farm early so that we will be seeing each other.”
“That will be better. I dreamt last night.” Obiye said smiling.
“About us?”Enenche asked.
“Yes”
“Tell me about it.” He said holding her hands and massaging them lightly.
“I dreamt we got married and bore two children.”
“Just two?”
“Yes”
“Two won’t be okay. I will be needing like a dozen children from you.” He sneered looking at the sky. They both laughed. They stayed there for a while before he accompanied her to the front of their house. He watched her enter the house before he left for his house.

Episode 3

Every season before the harvest is done, competition were done in Ogobia. The first competition was the dance competition. The maidens come out to display their dance skills. It is also during the competition that the young men find themselves wives. When a maiden comes out to dance, the young men interested in her will throw animal skin on the dance floor. The men then wrestle and the winner gets to marry the maiden.
Obiye wasn’t a good dancer and dislikes dancing. She was only going to participate because traditions demand her to do so. She had voiced her concern to Enenche.
"What if someone declares interest in her?" She asked him and he told her not to worry that every one knows about them. He only said that to calm her down but he too was afraid. He had no wrestling skill.
On the day of the competition, the whole community went agog. Maidens were running around plaiting their hairs into different styles and decorating their bodies, Obiye sat on the small stool outside her mother’s hut. Her mother stood behind her plaiting hair while her sisters were busy decorating her body with white, red and black chalks. She closed her eyes wishing it was her wedding day. They will get married immediately without delay.
“We are done Obiye. “Her mother announced beaming. She opened her eyes and smiled then stood up.
She stood with great certitude. She looked more beautiful than usually. Her sibling and mother stood staring at her admirable, she became uneasy.
“You’re making me nervous.” She bit her lips.
“You look pretty for a human my daughter.” Obiye smiled, her mother is good at flattering.
"You need to get going now. I wish you nothing but the best.”
“Are you not coming to watch me enem?” Obiye asked concerned.
Her mother smiled. “I will come my daughter.”
“Ok.” She said and they went out of the house.
Heads started turning from distance as Obiye approached the village square. People took their attention from the group of dancers to Obiye who walked majestically, like guardian angels, her sisters followed closely behind. Igbe and Owole appeared from the crowd and held her hand then took her to a corner. She sat on a trunk and her friends sat by her sides. One will mistake her for a princess from the kind of attention she was getting. She crossed her legs and her eyes searched hungrily through the crowd. Her eyes met his and a smile escaped her lips. He was smiling too. He winked at her and she looked away shyly. Her friends noticed them and began teasing her. She stood up and left to the back of a big tree. He stood up and followed her.
“You look more beautiful than ever.” He complimented her smiling.
“Thank you.”
Non of them utter a word again. Enenche stood arms folded staring at her. He was still smiling. She became unease and began fiddling with her fingers, her head slightly bending to the ground. Owole appeared from nowhere and held Obiye’s hand then took her away giggling. He shook his head and returned to his friends. He will get married to her immediately after the harvest. There is no need for delay. He will start building a hut for Obiye in the backyard of his father's compound immediately.
The competition started almost immediately the king and council of elders arrived. The maidens lined up in a single pile and one by one, they entered the dance floor. When a maiden began dancing, the throwing of the animal skin starts. Some maiden had five men throwing skins while some four, three, two, one and others none. The last group cry their eyes out because it means they have to wait another year.
Enenche’s heart started pulsating fast in his chest when the maiden in front of Obiye stepped into the dance floor. His palm was already sweaty out of anxiety. Obiye was visibly worried also. She kept tapping her right foot on the ground, she does that when ever she was worried and nervous. The drumming stopped, signifying it was her turn. They sighed almost together then she trudged into the dance floor. The drumming resumed and she began dancing.
He closed his eyes and slowly opened them after a while. He shook the fear off his mind and picked up the cheetah skin which his father had used and threw it in the dance floor. Obiye turned and looked at him then smiled. They will get married soon. Enenche prayed silently, he wished the drummers could stop right away and Obiye will be his forever. He looked around worried, let no one throw their skin please!.

Episode 4

Something fell on the ground and everyone turned and looked at it. A lion skin! Obiye stopped dancing and look around like others who were hungry to know who threw the lion skin. They searched around and their eyes fell on him. He was smiling deviously. Ejeh, the greatest warrior was the person. Obiye stood numb. She knew instantly that she was doomed. Ejeh had once tried to woo her but turned down his proposal, she hated brutal and disrespectful men like him and now, faith is trying to play foul with her. She glanced at Enenche who stood like a statue with hope lost. Tears stream down her cheeks. Enenche started walking backward until he disappeared among the crowd. She followed him but he was no where to be found. He was gone!
They sat on the heap of dried grass with their back against each other, each of them deep in thought. It was two days since the competition, everything seems as if it was a dream. Obiye had fainted and was taken home. The first thing she did when she woke up was cry. She didn’t cry alone, her sisters and mother cried also. No family will ever want their daughter to marry Ejeh. Her father sat out side his hut with his left hand on his cheek. Her brothers stood arms folded. It was if someone had died. Obiye cursed her beauty for it had attracted doom for her.
“What do we do now Enenche?” she broke the silence.
He sighed. “I don’t know, I am confuse.”
“Let’s run away to a far distance land and get married.”
He put his left hand on the ground then turned and looked at her.
“What about our families? What will happen to them? What will the society say?” she turned and looked at him.
“Let’s go to a strong medicine man so that he will do a charm that will kill Ejeh.”
“We will be building our marriage on blood.” Obiye said.
“What will we do then Enenche?” Her eyes were filled with tear.
“We should forget about each other.” He murmured. She gasped.
“You’re not serious Enenche!” she chuckled angrily. “You know I can’t marry any man apart from you.” Tears rolled down her right cheek.
“It is the only way out Obiye.”
“Can you stand the sight of me marrying another man?” she asked in a cranky voice.
“What do you want me to do Obiye? You know I can’t wrestle Ejeh!” he yelled.
“You’re a coward!” she shouted standing up. He stood up also.
“I agree, I am a coward!”
“I shouldn’t have love you! I should have love a man who can fight for my love not you, a coward?” She said and hurriedly left the place.
He watched her as she walked away. His world was crumbling. He wiped tears from his eyes and walked away.

Episode 5

Obiye sat on the stool grinding the burnt banana peel on the grinding stone. She finished and packed it into a small pot used for making soap and took it to the kitchen. Her father came out from his hut and sat outside.
“I want to talk with you when you finish.” Her father said loudly.
“Ok” Obiye replied and hurriedly finished what she was doing. She stroad and knelt beside her father.
Her father cleared his throat and began: “I know you’re bothered my daughter. We are too. You will feel dejected and ask why you, but I want you to be strong and know that what will happen, will happen, no one an escape destiny. If you’re destined to get married to Ejeh, so be it.” Tears rolled down Obiye’s cheeks.
“Is there no other way?” she raised her head and looked at her father for the first time since she came.
“Other way like?”
“I don’t know. Even Enenche wants to marry Ejeh.”
“The boy is right, wrestling Ejeh means suicide but that will make him a coward who couldn’t fight for what he want. Be patient Obiye. You can go now.”
She stood up and shuffled to her mother’s hut. No one is being fair to her. Why will they want her to marry Ejeh? She will rather die than marry that animal. Yes, she will kill herself! Let him marry her dead body. She will marry only Enenche.
Omaba convinced Enenche to come with him to the village where young men were drinking eje. He hasn’t left the house since he and Obiye fought. He washed his face and the head for the village square. Much talks were not done among them. Omana didn’t teased him like he used to. There was drumming and dancing. It is true that boys will be boys. Most of them were clearly drunk. The went and sat on an empty trunk. They greeted the people around and Omaba left. He came back few seconds with two horns filled with eje and gave Enenche one.
“So Enenche what do you plan on doing now?” Ogejuma, a bully who enjoy bullying people with his harsh words asked. Enenche’s heart skipped a beat, now that was what he was afraid of.
“I don’t get you?” he gulped down the eje, pretending not to understand what Ogejuma meant.
“Stop pretending Enenche. We all know who your wrestling mate is.” Ogejuma said, turning toward where Ejeh was.
Enenche turned and looked at the direction Ejeh was, busy gulping down eje. He looked disgusting with the eje running down from his wide mouth to his tattered and unkempt moustache down his belly. Enenche hated him more. How will the animal ever think he will marry Obiye?
“And so?” Enenche said, turning to Ogejuma.
“Will you wrestle him or allow him marry that arrogant Obiye?” Ogejuma laughed.
“How dare you!” Enenche fisted his hand, intending to bit Ogejuma but Omaba got held of him.
“Don’t allow him get to you.” Omaba whispered into Enenche’s ear.
“Reserve your energy for Ejeh you coward!” Ogejuma yelled, attracting people’s attention to them.
Enenche was vibrating out of anger. Ejeh stood up from where he sat and bounced to them. He spat on the ground in front of Enenche and stood, hands akimbo. The muscles in his chest was shaking profusely. Enenche spat in his front and stood up, facing him. Ejeh used his index finger and poked Enenche on the forehead. Enenche pushed him and fight broke. Three blows landed on Enenche’s face then he was pushed to the ground. Omaba rushed and helped him up then they left the village square with Enenche bleeding from the mouth and nose.
