5 New Tech You Should Expect To See At The 2018 World Cup by 247TechBlog(m): 10:52am On Mar 08, 2018
It’s 2018 and there is literally no area Technology is not used these days. Whether as a result of bare necessity or to decrease the margins of error, Technology is an ever-present force to reckon with.

For instance, line-call technology is currently being used in Tennis and Badminton for judges and umpires to detect if the ball crossed the line or if in or out, advancements in technology have also enabled brands to design jersey and sports wears to the last detail and recently drones have been used to capture moments on the football field

Football, most especially the FIFA world cup is not new to Tech innovations. Since the 1970 World Cup was broadcast in color for the first time, live streaming via online channels for football matches is presently available in High Definition, HD and UHD

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, we take you through 5 new technologies you will see at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

4K Coverage and Broadcast

In an effort to build on the success of the multimedia production at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, FIFA has confirmed that all sixty-four (64) matches at the 2018 World Cup will be broadcast in 4K Ultra High definition with High Dynamic range (HDR) display. This is a massive improvement from the traditional HD 1080p displays which are commonplace.

37 Cameras which are made up of 8 UHD/HDR and another 8 with Super-slow motion, 2 Ultra- motion cameras, a cable cam and a Cineflex Heli-cam will be employed to show clear, crisp pictures from all angles in every stadium.

Video Assistant Referee VAR

With calls for video technology to be introduced into football in order to help referees make 100% accurate decisions, VAR was first introduced at the 2016 World cup, tired in the 2017 Confederations Cup and subsequently rolled out in the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A.

Made up of a team of people who review referee decisions after replay, VAR helps in reviewing penalty calls, card decisions and controversial calls which may be in error.

However, it has arrived to mixed reactions as it often courts controversy in addition to time wasting. Video assistant referees are set to be used at this year's World Cup in Russia after football's lawmakers voted to approve the technology.

According to The International Football Association Board (Ifab), the VAR will be used solely in decisions involving;

Goal/no goal
Penalty/no penalty
Direct red card (not second yellow card/caution)
Mistaken identity (when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong player)
Goal Line Technology

Vanishing Spray

Previously adopted in the 2014 World cup, the Vanishing spray (also known as the vanishing foam) has seemingly come to stay. The vanishing spray is employed in Direct free kick situations close to the opposition’s penalty area; it directly helps to keep the defensive wall in check.

According to Steve Crossman, Vanishing Spray is used mainly at the highest levels of competition, vanishing spray is said to help prevent unnecessary delays by preventing the defensive team from encroaching closer than the mandated 10 yards (9.1 m) from the ball during a free kick, and also by preventing the attacking team from illegally moving the ball from the spot where the referee awarded the kick

Epts Electronic Performance And Tracking Systems (EPTS)

Electronic performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS), which include camera-based and wearable technologies, are used to control and improve player and team performance.

EPTS primarily tracks player (and ball) positions but can also be used in combination with microelectromechanical devices (accelerometers, gyroscopes, etc.) and heart-rate monitors as well as other devices to measure load or physiological parameters.

There are three forms of physical tracking devices available on the market; Optical-based camera systems, Local positioning systems (LPS) and GPS/GNSS systems

Goal Line Technology

Goal-line technology is a technical means of instantly determining whether the whole of the ball has crossed the goal line. In detail, it is a method used to determine when the ball has completely crossed the goal line between the goal-posts and underneath the crossbar

In order to curb interference with the game, The International Football Association Board specifies that only the match officials receive a signal on their watches to indicate whether the whole of the ball has crossed the goal line. Transmissions are typically received under one second and this makes for an immediate response from the referee. The game continues seamlessly and there are no forms of stoppages

The technology employed for goal-line technology spans from camera-based detection to magnetic fields and embedded receptors inside the ball
