What about the owners of the cars reporting to the police first that their cars had been stolen before they were abandoned by the robbers? The Law expects you to make an entry in the nearest Police station whenever your sensitive items are stolen so if those items were used for crime, you won't be termed an accomplise

Sorry please but which law is that?

Cars RECOVERED from the armed robbers OR cars ABANDONED BY the armed robbers!!

dainformant:
The death toll from Thursday’s robbery attack in Offa town in Kwara State has risen to at least 30. About 30 robbers had hit the town, raiding five commercial banks along the Owode Market Area of the town in Offa Local Government Area of the state.

The attack which lasted for hours had left the banks damaged with many feared killed and many more injured. The armed robbers were said to have made away with several millions of naira from the banks, leaving behind a tale of sorrow, tears and blood.

Initial reports had put the death toll at between 12 and 15, but the figure has risen significantly.

Nine police officers were among those killed in the attack while there are fears that the death toll may rise as some of the assailants were said to have attacked the police station in the area.

It was gathered that the gunmen arrived the town in seven vehicles and stationed themselves in each of the banks around 4:30 pm and held the town hostage before escaping through Igosun route in the area whey they allegedly abandoned the cars as seen in the pictures... The vehicles have been recovered at taken to the police station in the area..

Some residents in the area described the robbery as bloody and called for more security presence in the town, saying the incident has become an affair of every five years.

I have a problem with this statement; 'If you know the owners call the police' I hope the Nigeria police I know won't accuse the real owners of the cars as accomplices to the arm-robbers.

If any of those cars is one of my car, and some arm-robbers used it to carry a "successful" arm-robbery like this; heaven knows I ain't going to any police division to retrieve that car. Like fvck, we are talking about Nigeria police. Ok, sacrificial car will be my car's new name.

It is well

Well spoken, bro!

But under the law, even you (THE CAR OWNER) you're the first suspect.

so long as their owners reported their theft to the police stations closest to them, they have nothing to fear

I understand what you saying as the Nigerian Police can be very crazy but I think it's best one reports his or her car as stolen just for the records because if the Nigerian Police should find you out themselves then it's going to be a whole lot different issue. Quickly get to another Police Station and make a report.

The car owners are supposed to have reported their cars to stolen at the nearest police station.

If you're invited to the police station to answer questions in connection to the robbery because of your car you should be sensible enough to go in the presence of a lawyer to protect yourself from possible unlawful arrest.

That's said, that does not mean that the police won't still investigate you and your responses to their enquiries to make sure that your alibi is geniune.

There is hardly any crime that police can't participate in, be it armed robbery, assassination, kidnapping ,rape, ritual killings etc. Those guys are nothing but lawful criminals and daylight robbers. I don't know if ppl still respect them or their profession at all. What I however know is that most ppl fear and pretend to respect them for fear of their evils

Insecurity everywhere
Where were the the army, the mopol, navy, civil defence and other paramilitary forces when the robbery was on going?
Yet,they refused to sign peace corps of Nigeria into law with an excuse that the ones we have is enough.

Even some idiots on this forum also supported the presidency, yet they claimed to be educated.

The Nigerian police, the Navy, air force, Nscdc,Marine police, the army, boys scouts, girls brigade, boys brigade etc,put all of them together, they are not up to 2m as against the population of over 200m in this country.

Is a shame.

Apart From the robbery heist, i think the robbers had personal scores with the locals. Probably offa residents are good at giving the law enforcement agencies information. The blood shed was too much, casualties upandan. May God save us from these merchant of death.

Even if no law states that (which I doubt), the reasonable thing would be to report to the cops that your car has been stolen, to safeguard yourself in the case of eventuality such as this.

If you're scared of going to the police alone get a COMPETENT lawyer. If you can't afford one, talk to relatives. There must be someone in your family that can link you to a trusted lawyer, no?

Yeah you are very right to some extent. But the Nigeria police might contruct one theoretical BS they will use in nailing you. I don't trust those guys for a second.

What about if they come up with something like this; "dude you reported to us that your car was stolen earlier on because you wanted to exonerate yourself from our suspects list. You think you are smart." Funny.

I don't know, but man, I rather abandon that car even if I'd report to the police before the robbery occurred than to risk my reputation, my freedom, my innocence etc just because I want to retrieve a freaking car.

Well I'm a little bit opinionated, and in scenarios like this, I will always stick with my opinion.
not showing up to claim your car might put you in even more trouble with the police. Don't forget details of the owner can be pulled from your license plates alone. What then will now be the excuse for not going to. Claim your vehicle? They might say you are an accomplice and wanted to ditch the car to avoid being caught.....

Your brain is still intact.
But i think those cars are stolen, for you as the owner the safe thing to do is to report to the nearest police station before something like this come up.

seems most folks don't know how these idi.o.ts operate: those cars were most likely snatched ON THE HIGHWAY as they were going for the operations in which case the owners may not have reported the robberies at the police stations yet! I pity the owners.

Useless country, with the help of a forensic expert, you can track the robbers with the recovered cars, but a police man once told me in Nigeria many years ago "oga if everything dey computer, how we go chop"

They collect your data for ID card and your address for registration of phone but they can't track you with your finger print

What a country

bros they won't. eventually the innocent owners will be made to suffer for crimes they know nothing about. come to think of it....who uses his own car in a robbery and then abandon it?

Won't be surprised the gang of robbers came from South South or South East Region and Lagos; those are where sophisticated robbers dwell the likes of Evans. They look for easy prey states with under budget securities they can over run.
Moreover since SS and SE have given all their criminals amnesty instead of prosecuting them; the only way they show gratitude to the governors and states is to go outside the state to perpetuate harvoc (which is the only thing they believe and live for) and come back to that state with spoils of their criminalities.
Reason why I strongly condemn amnesty to known criminals.
We need to eradicate the proliferation of arms in the SS and SE and No to amnesty.

It's unseriousness really, because with the BVN Matching System as well as the platforms for both Voter’s registration and National ID registration, the robbers' fingerprints can be traced to them. Let's hope this case doesn't die down until justice is served.
