Good evening/afternoon people. Happy Canada Day grin I was wondering if anyone here is business inclined? I'm considering doing a business diploma when i land and I wanted to hear directly from someone who is in the field. As far as provinces and job opportunities are concerned what would you recommend?

Any help would be appreciated smiley

Landed seniors with kids, please I need feedback on either Lufthansa or British airways. I'm coming with an infant and active toddler. Any services for kids? How was the experience with security n all at airports. Thanks for your quick responses.

Hi,
If you are looking for the best treat for your kids, Emirates airline is your best bet as per priority, entertainment for kids and even toys/activities to keep them busy till you land. Plus you get strollers at Dubai airport for free meaning you can check in yours at Lagos to pick up at destination. Only downside is that you will be in for a long haul. Can't speak for the others since I have never flown them with my kids (3 under 5 year old kids)

I think most people here are immigrants. I would advise you consult with guys from the Canada student visa threads on the topic.
Cheers.

Please does all provinces in Canada offer child support for PR holders? E.g. Mississauga?

Also how about jobs in this province?

I can't really think of what job would be offered to a Biochemist or Microbiologist (check indeed dot ca), but one health career that is very much in demand is Nursing. Study BSN and move to a small province or small town in a big province i.e less competition for the top jobs, then you would be balling after that. With your Microbiology or Biochemist degree. You might be able to get into a 2 year top up Nursing program for people with Biosciences degree.

Hi guys,

So i landed in Toronto a couple of weeks back. Landing experience was smooth. No much questions. I was done in about 20minutes. I was only asked how much I'm coming in with, they didn't request to see it. Asked the food stuff I came with. And then asked me for an address to send my PR card to.

So it was very smooth. Went down and picked up my luggage. And I was off.

Flight was with Egypt air. I've not been on any other international flight so I can't really compare the service, but I'd say it was okay. Flight is long as hell. Slept, stood, watched movie, slept again. But once I began to see my destination from the plane, my eyes popped wide open.

As regards job search, I cannot thank God enough for the opportunities He has given me in finding a job on time. Because as with everyone else, it was a big worry for me. I began my search from home. I used freetone app as stated by others here. My experience from Nigeria is in banking. I explored switching to IT but I figured it'll be a bit difficult to do that immediately without experience. So I decided to continue my search in where I have experience as advised by some here and move on from there. I had a number of interviews over the phone from Nigeria and continued to in person interview when I arrived. Thankfully I've been able to secure a role within a couple of weeks of arriving here. So it does help to start on time, don't rule yourself out of any role, give the employer the option available to you and hear what they say.

Having said that, is there a group for Nigerians in Toronto? It can get boring here when you don't have much friends so if anyone is around North York/Etobicoke/Mississauga, holla! I wouldnt mind a meet up.

Hi efam,

Just to share briefly our landing story. Left Lagos on 23rd june via ethiopian airlines with about 10bags family of 5. Flight was long but finally landed in Toronto on 24th. We passed immigration and customs with no issue, we filled declaration form and answered the questions correctly stating we had food items and money. They asked the type of food and amount of money but was not asked to be seen or counted. Our COPR was processed but the officer saw a thin line on our passport photo and asked if we have another to change to avoid delay in PR card issuance. I went with enough extra photo for the family so we dropped them. She asked if we have follow on items which I said yes so we can ship our stuffs tax free for the next 1yr but I do not know if she will just note this on the system as no form was given to fill. For earlier landees pls share knowledge on this if form is needed if more stuffs will be imported within 1yr. We went for our bags and had to pay the porter service for big trolley at $24, the bags were not checked so we dropped them on connection conveyor to Calgary and off to Calgary, we did not miss our flight to càlgary. You have to purchase food on that air Canada flight. We arrived safely. The next day we did SIN, Bank account. Trying to do health card, phone line and permanent accommodation. That's our story.
SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT FOR CALGARY BOUND IMMIGRANTS, YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE WITH BOTH YOUR LOCAL DL AND INTERNATIONAL DL FROM NIGERIA. I have always thought our local DL alone is sufficient to drive for 3mths.
I am trying to link up with the landed calgarians now.
Wish us all success in our journey.

Congrats on your job. My advice to everyone looking for a job is to never rule yourself out. That's the job of the HR manager not yours so do your part by applying and let the HR manager do theirs.
I know of a lawyer (hasn't done the Canadian bar exams but did Masters here) who applied to a job at Bell. After the first interview, she told me the job was for an experienced person and she was so sure she'll never be called back bla black bla. She made it to the final interview with a VP who came from Toronto to Ottawa and is waiting feedback.

Never rule yourself out of a job role.

We thank God for His swift intervention in your job search.

I'll land in Toronto in August as a student (York University). Maybe we can link up.

Here is the story of one my linkedin connections

I am a Canadian, grew up my whole life in Nigeria. I immigrated to Canada in 2009 as a licensed Nigerian Lawyer. While in Canada I started from the bottom, as a licensed lawyer I worked as a customer service agent for almost 4 years. I obtained my Paralegal license in 2013 and worked as a Law Clerk till 2017.

Today, June 26, 2018 I became a licensed lawyer here in Canada. I am living testament that dreams really do come true if you add a dash of hard work and determination. Thank you to my family and friends that have been there for me when I almost gave up. I have entered a new phase in my life, now I need to make a decision of either starting my own private practice or entering the labor market. #lawyered

She was working the whole time but not as a licensed lawyer, I checked her profile, most of those years she worked as a paralegal(alternate profession of law). Those of us in regulated professions know how tough it could be to get licensed, Some would have to start afresh and many of those who seem like they had a smooth transition, actually had to go a couple of rungs down first. Though some would rather just settle for alternative careers, while some would make do with any job they get and still chase their dream career. 9years is alot but if that's what gives her fulfillment, I think it was worth the time.

Of course it was worth her time. There's nothing like getting to your desired destination. But I'm still wowed at how long it took. A bit of a reality check for me.

Hello

I'd be landing in about two weeks and I have a few questions.

Please where can I find the list of prohibited food items?

Then secondly just in case, we want to carry proof of funds as in a few cases they have asked newcomers. Is it okay to print the one that we used to apply or we need to do a new proof of funds?

I'm guessing the one used to apply will suffice.

Thankssss

Please clarify further and I'd also love the landed seniors to make inputs here. Do you imply that with my Local DL I can't drive when I arrive calgary for the first three months? My DL expires soon and I intend renewing but going by what you just said it makes no sense since I can't drive with it and I can still use the expired one to apply for Canadian DL.
