As a Nigerian living in Nigeria you sure can get a temporary work permit to Canada from Nigeria if you get hired for a job that the employer can prove that the job is legitimately required and no Canadian or person with permanent resident can do the job or wants to do the job. So, getting hired to play talking drum would qualify if that job could be proven to be legitimately required by the employer and no Canadian or person with permanent resident status can do the job or wants to do the job. Many Nigerians known to me are legitimately in Canada today through Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) for jobs like live-in caregiver/nanny for a Nigerian family, Nigerian local language teachers (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa.....), playing local drums (full time) like @francoteeboy2626 wants to do etc.

So, read the links in @joo2018 post that I have quoted for the legitimate way to approach this.

As a final note, please do not use any agent. They can not help you in anyway.

It is a complex something. Canada issues 2 types of work permits: Open work permits and Employer-specific work permits. Nigerians are eligible for either if they meet the criteria.

Employer-specific work permits is where it gets messy. These permits are issued under 2 programs:
Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and International Mobility Program (IMP).

For TFWP, your employer must raise a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before you can be given the work permit. Basically, your employer must prove that no Canadian or permanent resident is available to take the job

(see here).

So basically for employer-specific, the agent must guarantee you a job with a LMIA.

The jobs Nigerians get work permit for are typically culturally inclined where it is easy to prove that no citizen or PR is available or willing to do the job. For these type of jobs, there is no reason to use an agent to get work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). For this reason, they are told they are about to be defrauded if they are using agents and this is true.

Signed a lease yesterdayyy.Had a couple of showings scheduled for 2nd Jan. Went for the first one in the morning and it was OK and the application process was not cumbersome.Last month's rent was not needed on application but after application is approved and one is set to move in and is to be paid together with the first month's rent. We indicated interest and the form was sent to us.The next appointment was for later in the day and we decided to visit a family known to my hubby who accepted to become a guarantor and fill out the application from there while we wait for the next showing.Application was sent and hubby went to cash the money order we used in applying for the rejected application with his friend/naija brother. The people at the Canada post they visited had no clue on how to cash it and gave him contact centre no. to call and sort it out. The people on that end asked plenty questions and passed the phone from one person to another and yet money wasn't cashed.it was almost time for the next showing and I had to order an uber and just then, they arrived. We had to cancel the uber.
On a whim, I suggested we all go together to the next showing. I was enjoying the company of the family and wanted to spend more time with them and off we all went with even the little kids which delayed us further cos the kids had to be dressed and all. We called the rental company telling them we will be late. On getting there,I had to go see the apartment alone cos our friends were yet to arrive and hubby had to wait for them. The apartment was OK and I asked the application process and turnaround time.I was told decision is usually within 24 hours if every document is ready.The application process required the usual proof of employment etc. I told the lady we had a guarantor who was here with me and asked if we could apply immediately. It still required an application in our guarantor's name as well as my hubby's but because she was there with us seeing everything unfold, she readily filled out an application. We already had guarantor's payslips and ID hence nothing was outstanding and the lady started working on the application. The leasing agent was no procrastinator and she did a swell job of running around and getting things done even though she might be in her 60s and kept apologising for keeping us and in my mind I was like see this woman o.She no undertand as e be me.I dey ready to sleep here sef as long na my application
she dey work on.Last month's rent was by credit card which saved the hassle of going to purchase money orders.At the end of the day, we signed the lease and every every. She said she was going to pass the application up the ladder and get final approval but I wasn't fazed knowing say we don sign be say we don sign. We are only to show proof of tenant insurance before we collect the keys on move in date.
I had to text the managers of the other apartment I also applied for, telling them a story, apologising and asking that they cancel the application before they go vex and say new applicants must bring deposit while applying. A special thank you to everyone that reached out. God bless you all.

Happy new year all. I didn’t want my landing gist to have part 1 & 2; hence I waited for it to be almost complete.

Our PPR took over 10months and we had less than 5 weeks to travel from when COPR was issued. Everything was a mad rush! Bought winter jackets and sweaters from Yaba market.

Hi Zeiya,

There are so many factors that could come into play when it comes to getting an apartment. Your budget, meeting a level headed agent or landlord willing to lease to a newly landed immigrant, what date of the month you land (as most apartment lease start from the beginning of the month).

Of course, i have seen people get their apartment anywhere between a week and a month (thankfully Calgary isn't as bad as the likes of Toronto when it comes to getting a place). It is best you give yourself enough time to search so you don't have to make hasty decisions that might impact the POF you are trying to conserve.

I was browsing on size of apartment vis-a-vis rental costs and size of family in Canada as per of preparations. Questions of whether one should first manage with 1-room or 2-rooms apartemnt or deplete one's POF on a 3-room.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) National Occupancy Standard basically has rules for how many people can be in a house:
* no more than two people shall share a bedroom

* parents or couples may share a bedroom

* children under 5 years, either of the same gender or opposite gender may share a bedroom

* children under 18 years of the same gender may share a bedroom

* a child aged 5 to 17 years should not share a bedroom with a child under 5 of the opposite gender

* single adults 18 years and over and any unpaired children require a separate bedroom
