The recent ban and temporary ban lifting of Huawei's access to premium Google Android services has been a wake up call for Huawei to have a rethink about their dependence on Android. Many of us think this will be the end Huawei but this appears far from happening. It actually appears Huawei can actually sink Android to oblivion when you consider a few things. What if Huawei comes up with a new OS and the CEO of Huawei approaches the Chinese government for a favour to compel every Chinese smartphones manufacturer to switch to the new OS? China has numerous smartphone manufacturers from high quality to affordable quality. The list includes: Huawei Motorola Oneplus Lenovo ZTE Xiaomi Vivo Oppo meizu Infinix Tecno Itel All these Chinese smartphone brands combined together should actually be more than half of the entire Android phones used in the world. If all these brands are compelled to use a new OS by the Chinese authorities then Android might end up being drowned to the bottom. The only smartphone brands that will be left with Android are Samsung, LG, Sony and few other brands that have lost market share. One thing to note is that these remaining brands are actually expensive brands. Samsung phones are not that affordable. How many people can afford Samsung phones with good specs? Just a few people. This means many people will end up not buying the left over expensive brands like Samsung, LG and Sony still using Android. They will will forced to switch to a cheaper Chinese brand using the new OS. People say a new OS is not possible to pull through due to the availability of apps. We all need to be aware that there are only 2.6 million apps on the playstore and the bulk of those apps are junk apps and those that many people can do without. The number of very important apps and widely used apps on the playstore might be like 100,000 or even less. China has millions of developers who can actually duplicate all these important apps to the new OS within a short period of time. After this has been done the new OS will certainly grab a large market share bigger than Android due to the fact that all Chinese smartphone brands adopted it and the prices of the phones are affordable. Even Samsung and other expensive left over brands still stuck with Android might eventually make some models of their phones to adopt the new OS to stay relevant in the market. Anything can happen so the Android OS is not actually invincible. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Anyone remember Blackberry 10. Wonderful software if you asked me. Secure, efficient and I so loved it on my Z30 despite the app limitation. I wept when I moved on to Blackberry Motion. Android just didn't live up to my Z30 experience running BB10. BB10 died when Whatsapp, FB and Twitter stopped supporting it, but I guess Huawei has alternatives to these sites and a larger market than RIM had for BB10. Huawei’s alternative might just survive but it would struggle to kill Android. 3 Likes |

Trex4: Remember when BlackBerry integration/enterprise was the Daddy............. Never say Never....... I personally think Google, IOS & Trump have simply unleashed a devil, from their Chinese rivals.... This is why Samsung has been working on Tizen (for future deployment)................ Tizen on smartwatches, is better optimized than wear os....... Small small steps.............. 2 Likes |

This is going to be a long and hard task should Huawei decide to thread on that path. They will also have to convince Africans not to use other American mobile services like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Gmail...etc 1 Like |

Huawei that can't even manufacture processor as ARM has withdrawn support from Kirin(huawei own processor) cos of the ban. On what will their android run on. Android can only run on ARM and Intel. Intel is ruled out already as its a us coy. ARM a British coy has been ordered to stop all dealings with huawei. I'm pretty sure this ban will be reversed else huawei is a gunner with regards to Mobile phone manufacturing |

This is a conflict between USA government and Huawei Technologies co .LTD and not a war between USA and China... Get that right... |

Huawei have had very low sales for their new smart phones already. Chinese in China have started avoiding it. Most south Korean and Japanese tech giants have started cutting ties with Huawei already. Panasonic just did this morning. If Huawei doesn't work fast to reverse this ban; it will pack up in less than 2 years from now. |

Nuzo1:It will be hard for Huawei to die in China because they already don't even use Google services there. A new OS will be more easily implemented there. It's just a temporary inconvenience. They will rise again bigger and stronger. Besides, the American policy behind all this can still change. |

Most people think Huawei is just into phone manufacturing. Huawei is into software development with offices even in Nigeria. I don't see that company dying. Just like someone pointed out here, they can suspend the mobile phone production, but will definitely come out stronger. |
Re: How Huawei Might Easily Destroy Google's Android by Nuzo1(m): 9:44am On May 23, 2019 |
Delivar: Not at all, they won't die in China. But it will hugely affect the growth in China given that it will be almost an empty phone if it cannot be used outside China. However, I don't think the ban will be permanently affected. The Chinese government will be forced to make some trade concessions. That's Trump's target. There’s no positive spin to this situation for Huawei. Trying to sell smartphones without Google’s cooperation in the modern age is a spectrum that goes from bad to disastrous. Windows Phone, Palm OS, MeeGo, Symbian, Bada (later Tizen), and BlackBerry OS are just a few of the mobile OS corpses that Android’s rise has produced. App-less operating systems simply do not stand a chance against the contemporary iOS-Android duopoly. https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2019/5/20/18632266/huawei-android-google-ban-phone-business-future |

Of course, the software question becomes irrelevant if Huawei is unable to make phones at all, due to a lack of parts. With chipmakers such as Qualcomm also having stopped supplying Huawei, again due to U.S. Commerce Department requirements, will manufacturing remain an option? http://amp.timeinc.net/fortune/2019/05/20/google-huawei-android-ban |

This is a trade war and at the same time, a technology war. China is a big cheat. They copy all US technologies and then continue to ban rival companies to help their local businesses. Facebook, Google Search, Wikipedia, etc, are banned in China while the US continues to play mature being a democratic nation it's. |

Re: How Huawei Might Easily Destroy Google's Android by Delivar(m): 12:17pm On May 23, 2019 |
Predstan:Of course they can meet WhatsApp and Facebook to develop the version for the new OS. Whatsapp and Facebook are not included in the ban. A new OS doesn't mean a new WhatsApp and Facebook. |

It's amusing how some underestimate China's purchasing power. China does not buy loads from America but America sure buys loads from China, and a lot of American coys manufacture their and these tariffs are hurting like hell. Sale of cars collapse in China and and car companies are booking their biggest-ever annual loss, and I wouldn't be surprised if other products go south too. China telecom giant Huawei has taken over Apple’s market share in China. That’s just based on phones, which are all on Android. Wait until they roll out their own operating system for their own devices. Then Apple will need to reinvent something like the hologram phone before it ever recovers its China market. The same may be said for Apple throughout Asia. “At this pace, we expect Huawei to remain ahead of Apple at the end of 2019,” says Shobhit Srivastava, a research analyst for Asian business intel firm Counterpoint in Hong Kong. |
