Nigeria is too poor for 5G - maybe in another 15 years we will be ready.

We have a lot of poor people. But the number of people that can afford 5G is also significant.

If we can buy flagship phones, why can't we afford 5G.?

Jacseyi:
SHANGHAI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China granted 5G licenses to the country's three major telecom operators and China Broadcasting Network Corp on Thursday, giving the go-ahead for full commercial deployment of the next-generation cellular network technology.

The approvals will trigger investment in the telecommunications sector which will benefit top vendors such as Huawei Technologies, just as the Chinese network equipment provider struggles to overcome a U.S. blacklisting that has hurt its global business.

State-owned carriers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telcom, as well as state-owned broadcaster China Broadcasting Network Corporation Ltd, are the four licensees named by the government.

The three carriers had been granted trial 5G licenses at the end of 2018 and Thursday's announcement gives the go ahead to begin commercial deployment ahead of the original timeline that was targeting that for 2020.

The accelerated 5G rollout could help Huawei as Washington pushes its allies around the world to drop the firm from their 5G networks due to fears it could be used as a tool of Chinese state espionage, a claim that Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Huawei said in response to the license grant that it was prepared to support China's 5G build-out. It said it had signed 46 5G commercial contracts in 30 countries to date, shipping more than 100,000 5G base stations.

China is racing against other countries to deploy 5G on a large scale, paving the way for advances in technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous driving.

Some analysts however believe China's 5G rollout will face difficulties due to the U.S. ban on Huawei buying parts and components from American firms without Washington's approval.

"We remain concerned that if the U.S. export ban on Huawei remains in place for some time, and is even extended to other Chinese tech companies, it will be very difficult for China to build 5G in scale," Jefferies said in a note.

"The action by China to accelerate 5G licensing does not remove or alleviate this risk."

Telecom operators in Britain, the United States and South Korea have already started offering 5G services in limited areas.

China welcomed foreign enterprises to participate in China's 5G market, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which issued the licenses, said in a statement. Foreign firms likely to be interested in the rollout include Nokia and Ericsson.

China Mobile, the largest Chinese telecom operator, said it planned to offer 5G services in more than 40 Chinese cities before the end of September.

Shares in Chinese 5G-related firms such as ZTE slumped after the news, as investors pocketed gains.

don't let people who say 5G go chop data 5G go chop Data.

I went to YouTube to hear from people who are already using it and what they are saying is,

if you want to download e.g 1GB movie from the Internet on 4G it will take 30-40 minutes but on 5G it will take 5 seconds.

Now the difference here is the timing of the download. On 4G 1gb will be deducted from your plan while on 5G 1GB will be deducted from your plan also.

It's like downloading with 3G and 4G LTE. Same 1GB will be deducted for downloading same file but the difference is the timing. 3G might take 1r 20min to complete while a proper 4G LTE will take 30-40 minutes to complete. But 5G will take 5 seconds.

Yeah except 4G LTE won't use 30-40mins to download 1gb bro! Its usually 5-12mins!

I use a 4G LTE mifi (alcatel mw40) and used it with both airtel 4G and mtn 4G, is super fast!

I think these clearly confirmed that Huawei is partly state owned.
They are secretly bankrolled by Government to kill off competitors.

Most people buy flagship phones to impress and oppress. How much do these people spend on data on monthly basis should be the question?

You need money to oppress.
If you can afford to oppress with flagship phone, then you can afford data.

Your argument is the same mistake that Vodafone made in Nigeria.
They thought Nigerians are too poor to afford phones.
MTN came in, snapped up Nigeria and became the biggest in Africa.

Up till now, Vodafone can't penetrate the Nigerian market.

US is acting as a jealous wife.. simply envious of China's strides and milestones in the 5G technology.

There's usually no winner in a trade war. The US should be circumspect in taking certain trade decisions so as not to get its fingers burnt.

China has just cemented its relationship with Russia with Xi's visit to Russia. This is his 8th visit in 6 -7 years. America will be stunned.

The way Chinese Govt is fighting for Huawei calls for concern, they didn't fight for ZTE (another Chinese firm) when US banned them for selling equipment to Iran (US lifted the ban after paying a fine).

Same Huawei installed CCTV in Pakistan and we're streaming the streets of Islamabad to Beijing and were caught and they denied and said its for diagnostic purposes. They were also caught in Poland for spying.

We don't even need 5g do you know what is 1gb per seconds waiting we wan use am do if 4g can be fully upgraded to 4g or 4g(A) it's enough for us na companies need 5g. I don't see reason phone manufacturers should add 5g it will just add to battery consumption. To me mobile phone don't need it. My opinion though.

Putin is an intelligent man too, he knows China more than we Nigerians. He didn't allow them to build Moscow metro, he hasn't issue 5G licence to them for now. China is there for mining, tourism and Petroleum.
China offered to build Aircraft carrier for them but Putin refused.
He knows Chinese are crafty and once Chinese get the secret of their Rocket engine design and S400 missile defence system, they will copy it and build their own and sell at cheaper rate.
