hirteen people were injured when gunfire erupted at a memorial gathering early Sunday morning in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said the victims were between 16 and 48 years old and that four of them, including the 16-year-old boy, were in critical condition, according to the newspaper.

Waller also said police were questioning two people of interest, and had recovered a revolver from one of them.


He said the shooting occurred at a party commemorating the birthday of Lonell Irvin, a 22-year-old man fatally shot by a concealed-carry permit holder who said Irvin was attempting to carjack him in April. Waller said a dispute broke out during the gathering, leading to shots being fired and several people fleeing into the street.

“From outside, definitely there was two different shooters,” Waller told reporters. “It looked like they were just shooting randomly at people as they exited the party.”

Attendees gathered outside the residence vented frustration at the outbreak of violence at the gathering by people who had not been invited.

“It was his birthday and they were just celebrating a memorial for somebody that passed away, and this is what they do,” a 29-year-old woman who declined to give her name told the Tribune. “It’s real f---ing sad. Your kids can’t grow up, you can’t do nothing. This is what our life is going to be about.”

The incident comes even as Chicago police data indicate shootings and homicides are projected to drop by double digits for the third year in a row, according to the newspaper.
