The Niger State Government has clarified a viral video of the state governor, Mohammed Bago, seen ordering security personnel to slap a man during the Fidua prayer for the late wife of the deputy governor, Zainab Yakubu.

The video which went viral on Saturday captured Bago speaking in Hausa and ordering a security operative to slap the man and arrest him.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso in a statement on Tuesday said the cleric was only an impostor who attempted to play the role of an Imam.

Wakaso stated that the man had since apologised to the governor and forum of Imams for his misconduct, saying that he was neither slapped nor arrested by the security operatives.

The attention of the Niger State Government has been drawn to an editorial in the Daily Trust Newspaper of 15th July 2024, titled “Bago: Let Temperance Reign”. This editorial and many other reports did not only misrepresent the incident that took place during the three-day Fidau Prayers for the late wife of the Deputy Governor, Hajiya Zainab Garba, wherein the Governor ordered security agents to remove an individual who attempted to take over the spiritual duties of the Imams gathered at the Deputy Governor’s residence, it also came up with some fictitious claims.

“While the state government preferred not to engage in the controversy currently celebrated on social media and other platforms, especially when the state was in a mourning period due to the demise of the deputy governor’s wife, it has become necessary to set the record straight and correct the misconceptions about the Governor’s actions.

The governor considers the three days Fidau Prayers as a very sensitive and important event that should be presided over by an Imam or any renowned Islamic Scholar, not by an unqualified individual. The governor’s decision to ask the individual to leave the venue of the prayer is based on maintaining the sanctity and solemnity of the occasion.

He found the act of the person not just as disrespectful to the dead and the reason for the gathering but also as insensitive which led to him requesting that he be taken out by the security agents. The continued attacks on the Governor’s character by some. media outlets over this issue are unfortunate and uncalled for, especially since the Governor’s actions were meant to curb the excesses of unruly individuals and prevent the Fidau prayer from being reduced to a mere spectacle or a child’s play,” Wakaso stated.

The Special Adviser, who disclosed that the fake cleric had been a fan of the governor whom the governor had tried to empower several times, merely showed his overzealousness to get noticed by the governor.

“The individual involved not only denied being slapped by the security agents who ordered him out of the deputy governor’s residence in a video but has publicly apologized to the Imams and the governor, acknowledging his overzealousness and inappropriate actions. He has shown remorse and requested forgiveness from both the governor and the forum of Imams[l.

“The Governor’s actions were driven by respect for the deceased, the purpose of the gathering, and the need to preserve the sanctity of the Fidua Prayer,” she added.

The House Of Representatives member from Kaduna State representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Ekene Abubakar Adams, is dead.

Adams died on Tuesday morning, July 16, 2024, after a brief illness. He was 39 years old.

Hon. Adams, a former general manager of Kada City FC and Remo Stars, was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of Labour Party (LP) in 2023.

With his sports background as a former athlete and administrator, he was appointed the Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Sports, the position he occupied until his death on Tuesday morning, July 16, 2024.

Adams’ death was the second to hit the House within a week following the death of Hon. Olaide Akinremi (Jagaban) from Oyo State, who passed away on Wednesday, July 10.

Recall that until his death, Akinremi represented the Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State.

According to a statement by the Spokesperson of the House, Hon Akin Rotimi, he was a distinguished and ranking member of the 10th Assembly, Rep. Akinremi who served as Chairman of the House Committee on Science Research Institutions.

He passed away this morning, Wednesday, July 10, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 51.

Former President Trump is now breaking his silence on the assassination attempt against him during a rally on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania.

I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead," Trump told the New York Post. "I’m supposed to be dead."

"The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle," Trump also told the newspaper onboard his private plane while heading to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for this week’s Republican National Convention. "By luck or by God, many people are saying it’s by God I’m still here."

Trump told the Post that had he not turned his head slightly to the right to read a chart on illegal immigration, the bullet that grazed him would have been fatal.

He described the Secret Service agents that rushed at him like "linebackers," mentioning another one eliminated the gunman with "one shot right between the eyes."

"They did a fantastic job," he told the Post. "It’s surreal for all of us.

As Secret Service agents rushed Trump off the stage, he was heard saying he wanted to get his shoes.

"The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight," he explained to the Post.

Trump, reacting to images of him raising his fist and being surrounded by Secret Service agents in the seconds following the shooting, said, "A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen."

They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic picture," he added. "I just wanted to keep speaking, but I just got shot."

Trump also told the New York Post that he appreciated the "fine" and "very nice" call he received from President Biden in the aftermath of the event, noting – without specifics – that the race between them could be more civil going forward.

He praised his rally audience for staying calm during the entire incident.

How Houstonians survived a week without power after Hurricane Beryl


Monday marks one week since Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda Bay, devastating Houston's infrastructure and knocking out power to over 2.2 million homes and businesses.

While CenterPoint Energy has since restored power to the majority of those customers, hundreds of thousands of people still woke up Monday without lights, or air conditioning, or any number of the vital necessities made possible by the miracle of electricity.

The Houston Chronicle spent time with four households in different parts of the region Sunday to understand what a week without power does to the psyche, body and wallet. Here are their stories.

In the immediate aftermath after Hurricane Beryl, the sight of CenterPoint trucks would give Maria Noria some hope that maybe, finally, power would soon be restored to her sweltering east Houston home. By the end of the week, that hope had long since given way to frustration.

"The first couple days I was ok, thinking 'they're coming, they're coming, they're going to fix it,' and then we started to hear it was going to take longer, and it started to bother me," Maria Noria, 53, said in Spanish.

Noria lives with her husband and daughter in a bungalow in Houston's Northshore neighborhood, north of I-10 between the East Loop and Beltway 8. A week without power has tested all of their patience, though the family maintained a friendly disposition and was quick to crack a joke, even as they wiped sweat from their brows.

"We've laid out the red carpet for you," Noria said, as she led a pair of Chronicle journalists over a makeshift trail of concrete pavers, which helped us keep our footing in the muddy expanses of her backyard.

After two days without air conditioning, the family borrowed a generator from Noria's sister, whose power returned to her home. The generator provided just enough wattage to light up the kitchen and power a few fans on the floor. During the day, they could concentrate all the fans in the living room; at night, they could place fans directly next to their bed for a modicum of relief.

The Norias have also learned, however, that using a generator can be both expensive and annoying. Maria's husband, Adrian, has had to run outside at 5:30 a.m. to fill the gas engine. He estimated he'd spent at least $150 on gas in the past five days to keep the generator running.

After a week, the Norias, who moved to Houston in 2001, said they were still confounded about how they can still be without power after just a Category 1 storm. Even Hurricane Harvey only knocked their power out for a day or two.

"We're Houston, the fourth-largest city in the country. ¿Que pedo?" Adrian Noria said in Spanish. "What gives?"

For Stacy Humphrey, 48, and Donnell Blake, 60, a week without power was the difference between life and death. A pitbull in the northeast Houston rooming house that Blake owns gave birth to a litter of puppies two days before Beryl made landfall. By the end of the week, half of the litter was dead.

"We couldn't take them anywhere, they got to be with their mama, they're newborn puppies," Blake said. "There was one every dying every day. Their eyes just opened two days ago."

Humphrey tenderly carried one of the survivors, small enough to fit in one hand, to the living room so we could introduce ourselves, though the near-total darkness in the house made it difficult to see, even in the afternoon. The dog's fur was matted and sticky — you could feel it struggling in 92-degree heat — and the air, heavy with the smell of mildew, was thick enough to wade through. There were no generators here to provide even the most basic comforts.

Humphrey had subsisted on "scraps" since she's had to throw out all the food in her refrigerator. Her days were spent out on the patio in front of the house. At night, she slept on the couch with the windows open, facing the street. The gentle breeze was worth the fear she got being vulnerable to intruders.

"It's a whole lot of anxiety. That heat makes you fluctuate," Humphrey said.

The dogs weren't the only casualty of Hurricane Beryl at Blake's rooming house. Near the back wall, two Oscar fish floated belly up at the top of an aquarium filled with putrid green water, lined with a thick white foam at the surface. The tank's water filtration system can't work without electricity. Humphrey said the water was clear before Beryl.

Amanda Bartusek, the Heights
Going a week without power is tough. Being gaslit about it after throwing all your food away and living in hotel rooms for several days makes it even worse.

Amanda Bartusek, 36, lives on a block in the Heights that has been without power since Beryl hit last Monday. On Saturday, CenterPoint released new outage maps that indicated her area's service had been fully restored. The roar of generators up and down Prince Street on Sunday afternoon was proof that that was most certainly not the case, and no one has been able to get an explanation out of CenterPoint.

"Everyone is just up in arms, like 'what can we do?" Bartusek said.

Bartusek moved to the Bayou City from Iowa for work as an attorney two years ago, and Beryl was her first hurricane as a Houstonian. Longtime residents assured her that a Category 1 storm would probably just knock out power for a day or too, and she stocked up on a little extra food and water to prepare. She didn't think a generator would be necessary.

Seven days after the storm, Bartusek still came home every day to care for her cats and take them for a spin around the neighborhood in her car, soaking up the air conditioning. She's been staying with her partner in hotels every night since Tuesday, and in addition to what she called the flagrant price gouging going on, most hotels don't accept pets either.

Bartusek estimated that she'd spent about $2,000 on hotel rooms in the last week, spending up to $800 one night for relatively modest lodging. She hit her breaking point when she secured a room at one downtown hotel after searching for three hours, only to be told that her confirmation was mistaken after arriving to the lobby.

"You have a glimmer of hope that you won't have to sleep in a 90-degree house tonight, and everybody rushed with their confirmations only to be told 'sorry, there's nothing we can do,'" Bartusek said.

Jose Griñan, 71, had made it through a week without power by accepting that certain things are out of his control and making the best of the situation. He used his "old boy scout tricks" to hook up the generator in his backyard to a constellation of fans around the house, and cooled himself down Sunday with an ice-cold "batido," a banana-and-milk smoothie popular in his native Florida.

"You just got to smile through it," Griñan, the retired Fox26 anchor, said with a laugh.

His wife, Kathryn Griffin, has taken a decidedly less laissez-faire approach. She has been trying to get CenterPoint on the phone for days, and on Sunday, a crew of linemen was finally outside working on the house.

"It's hot, ain't it!" she says as she steps through the back door of their home.

Griffin was steaming, and not just from the heat. The couple's two-story house had been without power for a week, but the lofty ceiling in the main room left enough room for air to circulate that it's bearable to stay indoors with the fans running. But like Bartusek, the couple had been getting calls that their power had been restored when it hadn't been, and they worry about their neighbors, most of whom are senior citizens.

Griffin, the director of the human trafficking division for the Precinct One constable's office, had just gotten home from Gov. Greg Abbott's press conference Sunday at Gallery Furniture. She said she agreed with the governor that CenterPoint needed to be held accountable for their failures to prepare for and respond to Hurricane Beryl.

"CenterPoint is not the same company they were even two years ago. Now it seems to be money over people," Griffin said.

Griffin was showing us the pole where a disconnected telephone box had been sparking dangerously over their backyard fence when a lineman in a neon shirt and cowboy hat came to tell her the power had been restored. In spite of the sweat beading on her forehead, Griffin's makeup remained immaculate and only a few strands of hair are loose from her tightly pulled bun.

Griñan went inside to check the electricity. The lights and ceiling fans seemed to be working fine, he said.

Griffin needed more convincing. She walked to each external air-conditioning unit, which didn't appear to be operating.

"Not working," she said. "And these are brand new."

US law enforcement sources have reportedly revealed that the gunman who shot at former President Donald Trump in an assassination attempt on Saturday had explosive material inside his car and in his residence.

Multiple sources made the revelation to CNN on Sunday as the FBI and the Secret Service commenced investigation into the attack on the former President and Republican presidential nominee in the country’s 2024 presidential election.

A gunman identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, on Saturday attempted to assassinate Trump during his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The gunman from the rooftop fired some gunshots which injured Trump in one ear before he (the shooter) was shot dead by the Secret Service.

CNN reports that law enforcement sources said that authorities used the gun recovered from the shooter to help determine his identity as he did not have identification on him.

A person familiar with the investigation reportedly said that the gun used in the shooting was an AR-style weapon.

A witness has revealed that he spotted the gunman on the roof at Donald Trump's Pennsylvania rally and tried to alert the Secret Service some minutes before the shooting.

Despite his repeated attempts to point out the shooter, the Secret Service seemingly ignored his warnings, and the assassination attempt went ahead.

The witness told the BBC that after 5 to 7 minutes of Trump speaking, he saw a man with a rifle crawling up the roof of the building on the side which was apparently 50 feet away from them.

He said he along with other people started pointing to the man who was carrying a rifle and that they even pointed it out to the police who were there to guard Trump and maintain control but they were ignored and no action was taken until the shooter fired a shot.

The witness told the BBC, “We noticed the guy crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50 feet away from us. He had a rifle; we could clearly see him with a rifle.

“Next thing you know, I’m thinking to myself why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage?

“They didn’t know what was going on. I thought to myself why is Trump still speaking and why has the security not pulled him off the stage?

“I was standing there pointing at the shooter for 2-3 minutes and the Secret Service was looking at us from the top of the barn and I kept pointing at the roof. Next thing I know, shots were fired.”

The witness told the BBC that he saw the Secret Service kill the gunman he had seen on the roof.

He said, “They blew his head off. They (Secret Service) crawled up on the roof. They had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead. He was dead. And that was it. It was over.”

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the gunman who fired shots at former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania," the Bureau said in a statement.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI."

Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper at the rally, officials said.

"We do not currently have an identified motive," said Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, at a briefing Saturday night.

Federal investigators said the gunman was not carrying identification, so they analyzed his DNA to provide a biometric confirmation of his identity.

Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania. He was quickly bundled off stage and into a waiting vehicle and has since returned home to New Jersey.

In a post to his Truth Social network, Trump said a bullet pierced the "upper part" of his right ear.

Earlier, his spokesperson said he was receiving treatment at a local medical centre.

"I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin," Trump wrote. "Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening."

Blood was clearly visible on Trump's ear and face as protection officers rushed him away.

The suspect was shot dead at the scene by US Secret Service officers, the agency's spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said.

He added that one bystander was killed in the shooting and two others were critically injured. All three victims were male.

A new photo shows just how close a bullet came to killing Donald Trump during a shooting at his campaign rally.

Trump was seen covered in blood after a shooter, who the FBI has since identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot the former president's ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, local time.

The disturbing photo shows a grey line, a moving bullet, flying just inches from Trump's head.

The photo followed a video which showed the life-saving move Trump made just as a bullet whizzed by his head.

Right before he was struck in the ear, Trump turned his head slightly - a lucky head jerk that potentially spared him from graver injuries, or even death.

A moment after the former president slightly moved his head, the bullet appeared to strike him in the ear.

In the top right corner of the video, a fast-moving grey spot, which may be the bullet, appeared at the eight second mark.

At the end of the clip, Trump clapped his hand to the side of his head as blood can be seen above his ear and streaking across his face.

Another X user, Mirthful Moments, retweeted the video and wrote: 'Literally a fraction of an inch at the last millisecond. 100 percent divine intervention.'

The incredible image was snapped by New York Times photographer, Doug Mills, who recalled it being 'a very standard, typical rally' before the drama unfolded.

'All of a sudden, there was what I thought were three or four loud pops,' he told the New York Times.

'At first I thought it was a car. The last thing I thought was it was a gun. I kept taking pictures. He went down behind the lectern, and I thought, 'Oh my God, something's happened.'

After Trump was apparently struck, he dropped behind the podium and was surrounded by secret service agents, who then ushered the former president off the stage and to his motorcade.

Before he left the stage, Trump vigorously pumped his fist before the crowd, prompting his adoring audience to start chanting: 'USA! USA!'

After the incident, Trump posted a statement on Truth Social that shed light on the shooting.

'Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,' the GOP frontrunner wrote.

'I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,' Trump continued.

'I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.'

A moment later, Trump is apparently struck in the ear with the bullet. Spectators were quick to say how close the bullet was to striking Trump in a more fatal area

The former president added: 'Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.'

Trump further extended his 'condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.'

The former president also expressed his gratitude for the swift response of the Secret Service.

He wrote: 'I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.'

Anthony Guglielmi, the Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, released a press statement that provided further details on the shooting.

'At 6:15pm, a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue.'

Guglielmi continued: 'US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased.'

At the end of the statement, the chief of communications confirmed that one spectator was killed and that two spectators were injured.

The FBI is now investigating the shooting, which is being treated as an assassination attempt.

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson also announced that the House will conduct a full investigation.

'The American people deserve to know the truth,' Speaker Johnson said.

Former US President, Donald Trump, has left the hospital and returned to his home in New Jersey after he was injured in an attempted assassination during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Trump, who emerged with a bloodied face, says he was shot in the ear, describing a "bullet ripping through skin," BBC reports.

The Trump campaign said in a statement on Saturday evening that the former President was "fine" and that he was "being checked out at a local medical facility."

Donald Trump Jr. told ABC News that his father, Donald Trump, is "in good spirits" as he remains under medical observation after the assassination attempt at the rally in Pennsylvania.

The assassination attempt occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. Trump was shot in the ear and was seen with blood dripping on his face.

Despite the assassination attempt, Trump is still scheduled to fly to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention.

The FBI is leading the investigation, and the suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was shot dead by the Secret Service.

One spectator was killed at the rally and two others were critically injured, while a witness told the BBC that he saw a man with a rifle crawling on a roof before shots rang out, and that he tried to warn police.
