The Anambra airport does around 100,000 passengers a year. It probably generates around 300m a year. Considering it cost over 60 billion to build it would take it over 200 years to pay back the capital and that's without interest or maintenance.
Anambra airport was built in the hope that it would combine with the ICC to fly guests in for conferencing. Of course the ICC has turned into a venue for political speeches and sharing of rice. ANSG has not marketed it for proper business and professional events. Perhaps if they did so the airport would see significant traffic. But as Anambra dilly rallied, Enugu has taken the bull by the horn and completed their conference center. Considering that Enugu has more airlines and international connectivity there is serious competition for the future of the ICC.
ANSG has not just failed in business promotion but also in cultural tourism. Ghana gets over 1 million tourists every year. Anambra the land of Azikiwe, Achebe, Osadebe, Adichie, umu obiligbo,
the land of yam festivals and nollywood with lots of cultural festivals has not even attempted to attact 10,000.

We can do a lot more to make the state a destination.

Obiora you are yapping nonsense. Imo airport is over 30yrs old. Enugu airport is over 40yrs old. Anambra airport is about 3yrs old. One would expect that Imo and Enugu airports should be as busy at PH airport at least, but it still at the same level with Anambra airport that was built yesterday. Now look at it from that perspective, then you will realize that Anambra is the busiest so far in SE. I don’t care where your mom chose to land, but the truth is that 99% of Anambra people use Anambra airport, the only time I used Asaba airport was when I checked on air peace, then I realised that all the flights were booked even one week in advance. Other than that most residents of Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi and all the hinterlands prefer to use Anambra airport.

As far as I'm aware, only Air Peace and United Nigeria run flights to Anambra airport - usually one flight per day and not even everyday - while other airlines like Dana and Ibom Air also run to Enugu and Owerri. The last time the very lousy FAAN published figures for air passenger traffic for 2023, Enugu, Owerri and Asaba airports all had greater air traffic than Anambra airport. Most times I buy tickets for my mom, she still prefers going through Asaba given it's much closer to Onitsha and also closer to our hometown. From all available data, Owerri has consistently been the busiest SE airport. The Anambra airport was marketed as a "cargo airport" to justify building it - which any serious person knew was nonsense cos air freight is very expensive and not a viable means of transporting most goods. What is the tonnage of cargo that is going through the airport? They also lied it would be funded through a PPP initiative and ended up wholly funded by the state coffers. The only reason we built it was for chestbeating purpose ([i]"anyiwa nwekwa airport nke anyi"[
But at least, building an airport is not THAT expensive (even Ebonyi managed to build one that nobody uses) and any state in Nigeria can afford it. Saddling yourself with debt to build a metro rail line is pretty mad stuff.

Anambra international airport is not just the best and biggest in Igboland, but in just over 3yrs it has garnered so much traffic like has never seen before in SE.
