OmanIman: The Senate President, David Mark said recently that social media in Nigeria should be restricted, as Nigerians use social media to criticize their leaders with no opportunity for retraction. Is this morally justified or is it a declaration of war on peoples fundamental human rights, freedom of expression and freedom of information bill?Is this even constitutional? Imagine a world where social media becomes restricted and we cant access sites like Nairaland! What will you do?

Our leaders are looting and plundering the economy with no opportunity for retraction, this is their specialization.

We are criticizing them with no opportunity for retraction, this is our specialization.

The equation balance, why the complaint by Mark now, this is a man who is suppose to use his exalted office to enthrone good governance and accountability, but he is busy enriching himself.

So we should shut our mouths. At last its getting to them, yes, its just the beginning.

We are unstoppable, as long as they continue to get thing wrong, we shall also continue to fire them

AjanleKoko:

The government of Nigeria, and even the private sector, don't have the technical know-how to restrict the usage of social media.
Apart from forcing telcos to shut down internet access, which would imply shutting down the bulk of international calls in and out of Nigeria, as well as financial transactions, I don't see what else they can do, apart from complain.

You could even set up your own satellite transponders and access the Internet, and they would not even know!
True talk!
Dull leaders that cant monitor ordinary calls.
The battle line is drawn, Change or face more Criticism

The government does not need the technical-know how, they just need some bucks to pay a private third party corp that has got that know how; as is done in some parts of the middle east, particularly the golf states where internet is still accessible, but countless hosts such as the ones hosting porn sites are stuff of legend. One way around this one though, would be to use anonymous/false proxies. But maybe by EKT-Bear's definition of social network, facebook and twitter might lose their social network status since most free alternative proxy servers don't have the capacity to offer real time updates.
