Religion / Has Religion Made Nigerians Any Better? by 100gigabytes: 7:10am On Apr 29, 2012
It beats my imagination how despite all the travails our nation Nigeria has and continues to go through, we remain not just the happiest but almost the most religious, with each passing moment the picture is even clear.
In the next few paragraphs rather not touch or discuss, my reason is not to court controversy, but I am sure some folks would be upset and no matter the side of the divide, my intent is to open up a conversation and broaden our learning experience positively.
Ever been to Aba the commercial nerve centre of Abia or visited a local crude oil pipeline village in Bayelsa on Sunday, everyone is in church, all well dressed, venerating to the clergy's vituperations at the devil and worship of God.
You could almost hear a pin drop on the streets of most South-eastern states, as every kidnapper is seeking forgiveness for the past week's adventure while seeking aid for the forthcoming week.
If you are privileged, you want to be in Kano or Katsina, on a Friday, and see how thousands of faithful are running to meet Jumat service, you will not be able discern how a population all running about with ablution rites will not hesitate to perpetuate abominable acts without any sense of remorse.
From the cities of Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Sokoto, you are greeted with billboards of revivals, conventions, conferences, seminars, workshops of various faiths and advertising superstar men/women of God.
Every major celebration comes with either a multi or a non-denominational church service on Sunday, preceded by a Friday mosque service.
We are not short of Catholics, Anglicans, and Pentecostals, on one divide and then Izalas, Nasfat, Ansar-ud-Deen, Anwar- ul Islam, Jamatu Nasiru Islam (JNI), The Jama't Izalat al Bid'a Wa Iqamat as Sunna (JIBWIS), on the other. I have on purpose left out the traditionalists and pagans.
A nation that prides itself with a politically active Witchcraft Association, I have been to many a funeral where different cult groups are fighting for the corpse.
For all sorts of reasons we are compelled to fill forms, stating whether we are Christians or Muslims, in some cases it is narrowed down to us spelling out which sect or group we belong to.
It is a Nigerian society where two-love bird cannot marry because they are from different religion or sects. However the heads of the families involved will not hesitate to steal public funds without recourse to their faith.
So much sentiments to our faith, after all it is supposed to be the essence of our existence, but the fact is that in practice, do we preach what we practice, or practice differently what we preach. A Christian steals and is conveniently defended by a Muslim lawyer, and we call it the profession, the practice,
Yet we are grey with anger when a list is released as we try to fragment the list between how many Muslims and Christians and if the Chairman is a Christian, or if the Secretary is an Ogboni member. Just reflect for a minute my dear reader and answer, is Nigeria as a nation, a Christian or Muslim?
Ever attended a function, and then watch the comic of a Muslim having to pray and then a Christian too having to pray, and it’s amazing as we try to play God.
The new wave of the moment which is private universities are mostly run by Churches and Mosques but the tuition charged are almost impregnable for the masses despite the fact that the widow's mite in many cases make these schools possible.
I know it’s a sore area, no one wants to talk, I dare ask, how has the Christian presidency of Jonathan helped Christians or Muslims, are we better as a people because the Senate President, SSS, NSA, COAS are Christians,
Was it not a Muslim Abacha that brought the Pope, did the Yar'adua presidency benefit Muslims or Christians?
We have become a nation that prays more and works less, forgetting that miracles are no magic, that faith and fate are different concepts.
Both leadership and the led simply forget that the basics of life bare no religious colouration. Good roads are not for Muslims alone; quality hospitals are not the reserve of Christians.
HIV/AIDS does not discriminate between religions, we are sensitive about the Arabic inscription on our notes, yet no Christian ever went to the bank and refused to collect the money because the cashier was Muslim.
One only needs to listen to all the conspiracy theories of Islamic Banking to appreciate that as a nation we are mostly religious bigots, as the noise has faded into the weather.
A falling educational system is not because Muslims did or Christians did not,
The simple preserve of live and let live, love your neighbours as yourself, do unto others as you would have them do to you is lost on us.
We forget that there is a simple reason why God chose us to still co-exist together and it is fate, as long as we are one and remains one, there is need to look at ourselves.
The things that trouble Nigeria are neither Christian or Muslim, corruption, greed, nepotism and ethnic jingoism and parapoism, mismanagement perpetuated by Christians, Muslims, Witches, Wizards and all sorts.
If only we practice the injunctions laid out by our various holy books, our society would be a reflection of our lives. Sadly we are with our various faiths trying to cut our nose to spite the face.

The government needs a more comprehensive approach to include , diplomacy, economy, military and judiciary. No suspect has been sentenced to jail since the era of Boko Haram started, secret killings and trials do not solve the problem, i lost a neighbor in kaduna easter bombings , she was 5 months pregnant for her late husband who died in joe crisis. i feel like shooting any politician i see.

"And ultimately, when a nation goes from poverty to prosperity, it makes the world stronger and more secure for everybody.

That's why the World Bank is so important, and that's why the leader of the World Bank should have a deep understanding of both the role that development plays in the world and the importance of creating conditions where assistance is no longer needed.

I believe that nobody is more qualified to carry out that mission than Dr. Jim Kim."

Bought private jet, mansions and top boarding school places for his kids
Went from £15k DIY store job to leader with presidential aspirations
Tried to pay $15m bribe to government official to make corruption investigation 'go away'

A former Wickes cashier who became governor of an oil-rich Nigerian state was part of a scam which plundered £157million from some of the poorest people in the world.
James Ibori personally pocketed £50million which he splashed on a life of luxury including his own private jet.
Ibori, 49, an ex-governor of Delta State with presidential aspirations, stole public funds for a 'lavish and expensive lifestyle'.

Playboy lifestyle: Former Wickes cashier James Ibori, 49, has admitted a fraud totalling more than £50million which he committed while a former Nigerian state governor
His spending included a portfolio of luxury houses, a £12.6million private jet, a fleet of top-of-the-range cars, top UK boarding school places for his children, first-class travel and posh hotels.
As his people struggled in poverty, Ibori’s monthly credit card bills alone topped £125,000.

It is estimated that the embezzlement from the Delta state is yet unquantified, but could exceed £157million which was laundered in London through a number of off-shore companies.
The case at Southwark Crown Court was delayed this morning after a ruckus broke out in the corridor and police had to be called in to control crowds of his supporters.

Luxury: Exclusive home that Ibori bought in Hampstead, north London, with £2.2million in cash in 2001

Fleet of cars: The former Nigerian state governor owned a number of cars including this Bentley Continental worth in the region of £150,000

Extraordinary extravagance: Ibori owned a fleet of armoured Range Rovers - including this one - bought with the proceeds of his £50million fraud
Prosecutor Sasha Wass was thrown to the floor as supporters tried to rush into the tiny courtroom.
She told the hearing: 'The defendant was governor of the Delta State, one of the richest oil producing states in Nigeria, between November 1999 and May 2007.
'It is the prosecution case that during his two terms in office he deliberately and systematically defrauded the people whose interests he had been elected to represent he went on to launder the money he stole in this country.'
He inflated state contracts, took kickbacks, and through bent employees stole cash straight from the State accounts and secreted the cash into off-shore accounts across the globe.
Instead of using the money to help his people, he bought a £2.2 mansion in Hampstead with cash, a house in Regents Park, a flat in St John's Wood, a £311,000 home in Dorset and a £3.2million mansion in Johannesburg, as well as a house in Houston.

Fraudsters: Solicitor Bhadresh Gohil (left) and Ibori's wife Theresa (right) who have already been convicted of money laundering in the scam

Convicted: Ibori's sister Christine Ibori-Idie (left) and his mistress Udoamaka Oniugbo (right) have also been found guilty of money laundering
His 'greed and acquisitiveness' was also represented by his fleet of armoured Range Rovers worth £600,000, a £120,000 Bentley, a Jaguar for his Hampstead home and a Mercedes Maybach bought for 407,000 Euros that was shipped direct to his mansion in South Africa, Ms Wass said.
At an earlier hearing, Ibori pleaded guilty to ten offences - eight of money laundering, one of conspiracy to defraud Delta State and one of conspiracy to forge.
Nigerian-born Ibori moved to the UK in the 1980s where he married his wife, Theresa, and worked as a cashier at Wickes in Ruislip, Middlesex, earning around £15,000 a year before the couple were arrested for theft from the store in 1990 and fined £300.
A year later, he had another brush with the law when he was convicted of handling a stolen credit card and fined £100 before he moved back to his homeland and started as a ‘policy consultant’ for President Sani Abacha’s regime before climbing the ladder of the ruling People’s Democratic Party.
After lying to the independent Nigerian Election Commission by using a fake date of birth gained through a false passport to hide his previous convictions and financial status, Ibori was elected as state governor for Delta State from 1999 - giving him immunity from prosecution for his two terms until 2007.

Multiple residences: Homes Ibori owned in Lagos, Nigeria (left) and Kenton, north-west London (right)

Homes: An apartment owned by Ibori's sister Christine Ibori-Ibie in Brent, north-west London (left) and a London property (right) owned by his mistress Udoamaka Onuigbo
Ms Wass described it as 'planned fraud'. She said: 'He didn’t accidentally become involved in a pre-existing corruption, he changed his date of birth in 1996.
'From the moment he was elected, he set out enriching himself at the expense of some of the poorest people in the world.
'His greed increased exponentially during the course of his governorship as did his arrogance.'
It was heard that he tried to pay a $15m bribe to a government official to make the corruption investigation 'go away'.
Even after he began to be investigated in 2005, Ibori involved himself in another 'massive fraud' and tried to bribe Nigerian officials, interfere with the trial and impugn the integrity of the officers.

Upmarket address: Another of the Nigerian's London properties lies on the capital's famous Abbey Road

Fraud: Another central London flat owned by Ibori's mistress (left) and a property he bought in Shaftesbury, Dorset, for £311,000 in 2005 (right)

Lap of luxury: Ibori's mansion in the Nigerian capital of Abuja
He was helped by family members, including his wife, sister Christine Ibori-Ibie, his mistress Udoamaka Oniugbo, and a series of corrupt professionals - a London-based lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, who acted as his banker and set up a myriad of off-shore companies, a fiduciary agent, Daniel Benedict McCann, a corporate financier, Lambertus De Boer - who have all been jailed for a total of 30 years.
His fraud unravelled when the Met raided the office of 'trusted servant' Gohil, 47, who has since been jailed for 10 years, and found hard drives containing detailed records hidden in the wall behind a fire place.
A series of trials have taken place leading to six convictions and sentences totalling 30 years but Ibori has made a number of attempts to disrupt the course of justice, Ms Wass said.
When he was arrested in Nigeria in 2007, the High Court froze assets worth £35million despite him only earning around £4,000 a year. A court later dismissed the charges and he fled to Dubai where he was arrested by the Met.
He was trying to purchase a $20million jet when he was arrested.
Ibori, wearing a dark suit and glasses, is represented by two QCs during his sentencing hearing which is expected to last two days.
The case continues.

Being the leader of an organization is not just about PHD, Magna cum laude or whatever, integrity, transparency and vision are very essential to leadership, and this is what most Nigerian leaders lack, this is what makes people like Fashola stand out. and IBori on jail . its a shame to all those whom Ibori governed , you have a rogue as your state governor and you even voted for him based on sentiments of tribe , religion or greed. now see how he has embarrassed you and i guess you are not even a beneficiary of his loot. Already Jonathan is thinking of 2015 and it is the same Nigerians that are complaining now about insecurity and economy that will go and queue to vote him in , we are truly getting what we deserve its just unfortunate some are sacrificing their lives for it , an approximately 5000 Nigerians have died as a result of Boko Haram activities from Jan 2010 to date. isn't it shameful, we are least concerned because our fathers, brothers and friends are not yet involved.

if she wins and so what for Nigerians, if she is so good to win let her stay here and fix the shambles of nigerian economy, you come here to remove subsidy and you want to run to world bank let someone else deal with the mess, God is not sleeping, Nigerians open your eyes, its not about Nigerian heading this or that, what impact does it have on the common man in your village or the sick mother in the hospital, OBAMA is a black man he is US president and so what? How does it affect you ? or your community or your nation , people should wake up and stop being unnecessary selfish, Jonathan is Christian, how many christians have died since he became president, i bet if it were Buhari, some of those christians bombed by boko haram will still be alive today. please think deep.

Politics / Re: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by 100gigabytes: 10:03am On Apr 15, 2012
IN Nigeria, we claim we want to be amongst the 20 top economies by the Year 2020 and the way to achieve this is by building Almajiri schools of N240 million which the president went to commission? why is that that all over the wold its only nigeria that has Almajiri school

The issue of almajiraira has remained worrisome in the minds of northern elite. This is because the practice has been a source of ebarrassment to the region.
The word ALMAJIRI emanated from the Arabic word “AL- MUHAJIRIN”, the concept of Al-MUHAJIRUN came as a result of Prophet Muhammed’s migration from Mecca to Medina, meaning the emigrant. In Hausa land the term Almajiri could take any of the following forms any person irrespective of gender, who begs for assistance on the street or from house to house as a result of some deformity or disability; children between the ages of seven and fifteen who attend informal religious school who equally roam about with the purpose of getting assistance or aims; or even a child who engages in some form of labour to earn a living.
Almajiri syndrome can be said to be another form of child abuse, in the sense that children are exposed to laborious work at tender age, normally children between the ages of seven and twenty. Their mallams cannot feed nor provide the necessities of life for them therefore they embark on begging or laboured work in order to survive and gain.
The Almajiri syndrome or phenomenon is alarming because It takes a different dimension compared to the initial idea of Almajiri formation. Almajirai plural of almajiri are children that are sent to school for learning by parents, but instead of doing what they are expected to, they will be seen roaming the street beging and engaging in unnecessary activities in which they will eventually became a burden to the society due to lack of career guidance and counselling by teachers.
Such children (the Almajirai') are usually aggressive and violent as they are exposed to different forms of pressure, problems, hunger and jobs that demand several times their energy and weight before the job Is accomplished. Some of them do go to restaurants to wash plates, fetch water so that they will be given left over foods. They are all over the streets, very dirty, hungry thirsty, they lack all kinds of necessities of life and at times they cause traffic hazards.
Child labour is a fundamental factor of child abuse, these children who are laboured about in our communities are our children. They are the leaders of tommorrow as aged ones are dying up the younger ones replace them. They are our future hope and pillars, without which the future may look bleak in terms of development, because all these violent exhibiting children grow up to become criminals in the society within which they live, hence set back in the society because the increase in number of crime that is being attributed to increase of criminals in the society.
This issue of begging is more common in the northern part of Nigeria where the children are being denied their rights including the right to western education. As the case may be, these children turn out to be loosers in whatever perspective because some of them may not concentrate to learn even the spiritual knowledge they are sent for talkless of the western education. They are automatically denied.
Usually a child becomes an Almajiri when there is high striking poverty line in his family to take care of his essential needs such as sustenance. Some children are forced to become one simply when they lose their parents and when their relatives or guardians cannot keep them. Most of such children become victims when their parents send them to Quranic schools outside their hometowns.
A child is usually taken away from his parents, his relatives, and his home to some remote areas for the purpose of learning the recitation of holy Qur’an. At the end of the day the child will learn less If any about the. Qur'an recitation and more mischievous acts. This exercise is prevailing in the northern part of Nigeria as the Hausa/Fulani are predominantly Moslems and settlers of the north.
Social psychologists also noted that when a child is exposed to labour at a tender age and deprived with little or no benefit and entertainment, such child normally develops the habit of loneliness and thus lead to schizophrenia, therefore children’s right must be protected, preserved and maintained, similarly they should be given equal rights and priviledges as adults for a brighter future. The primary or basic children’s needs are right to education, health, entertainment, association, interaction, shelter and nutrition. Once these essential needs are provided, there is no doubt that they can perform wonderfully in their undertakings and can deliver as leaders of tomorrow.
