Then how did you boot the system?


Run C:\ from command prompt and see what happens

Has it been showing it previously for the internal drive? And not some connected external storage device?

If the D: drive have been for the internal disk on the laptop, perhaps its drive letter association is lost. Try this:
(Assumption: you are running a version of Windows OS from XP upwards)
1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage". This opens up the "Computer Management" console.
2. Select the "Storage" node and click "Disk Management".
3. Look to the right hand side and see if you can see a "Volume" that doesn't have a letter assigned to it in parenthesis.
4. If there is, right-click it and select "Change Drive letter". Select your D: once more, and you should be fine.
