Major Blunders Resulting In Building Collapse In Nigeria! by swiftycool(m): 6:03am On Aug 26, 2012
Due to the alarming rate of building collapse in various parts of the country recently and especially in Lagos State. It have discovered that the major causes are due to any or a combination of the following:

1. Inadequate or non existent initial structural design and analysis for the building especially storey buildings.(Often built by self made engineers)

2. Inability of onsite manager (engr.) to understand building codes/standards or implementation of laid out structural design instructions.

3. Architect's negligence of carrying out proper pre-design site analysis to check site prone negative man made as well as environmental factors such as nearby vibrations, unsuitable soil types, occasional flooding, altered or disturbed soil and land structure. etc and propose problem solving design solutions.

4. Desperation of contractors/owners to apply unapproved methods as well as substandard materials in order to cut corners and save costs.

Fellow Nairalanders, experienced builders, construction professionals, and property buyers, Please feel free to elaborate or add more factors which from personal experience you think is also important to note, so as to help govt. make and enforce suitable policies, educate people, ensure better and safer building structures, protect investors and help save lives in future.

Looking 4ward to ur helpful inputs. . .
