Russia's Gazprom OAO is in discussions with the Nigerian government about signing an energy deal that would see the giant state-run natural gas company help explore and develop the West African nation's giant gas resources, a senior Nigerian oil official and Gazprom officials said.

Gazprom spokesman Sergey Kupriyanov confirmed that the company is in talks with Nigerian officials, saying, "We are interested in Nigeria, and the talks are under way."

Does Nigeria need more talks with foreign companies to come in to manage our own resources and utilities for us??

Why is it bad to discuss the countries fortunes with outside countries. It is the corruption which cuases people to have reservations with foreign companies otherwise it is fine.

Well ordinarily, there is nothing bad with such discussions only that in this case Nigeria is involved yet again and we have yet to account for the many billions of dollars we have spent in much the same way on much the same deals in the past so many years. Why do we need more deals for crying out loud when we have not yet fixed up the many holes that has so far sucked up billions of our money into the pockets of thieves in the past?? What guarantee do we have that is is not another one of those deep dish deals of the past that yields nothing but will cost us billions yet again?? se won fi were she wa? LMAO!!!!

@Kobo

Such deals are de rigueur in the petroleum sector, but I don't get why the poster seems to believe that this particular one will bring "progress" to Nigeria.

Russia and Nigeria are the world's two largest gas-flaring nations. The senior Nigerian oil official said Russia was keen to assist Nigeria find commercial uses for its gas and to reduce flaring.

if we are honest we could have cheap GAS to power our turbines and generate electric power that will OIL our economy!

but, YARA-DUL is already compromised! the people that PAID and made him President need returns on their investment.

sorry . dont expect anything from him. He is dead on arrival:just like OBJ!

I stand to be corrected. But if you have a commodity to sell is it in your best interest to have just one buyer or to have different buyers which gives you the opportunity to negotiate better?

Nobody is saying you shouldn't sell your commodity if have got enough to sell. What guys are trying to say is that we have had a lot of these kinds of signings in the past, and nothing came out of it, not the so called progress you talked about about. All because of corruption.
If corruption is not properly tackled by bringing people like IBB, OBJ, Anenih, Sam Egwu, Atiku to justice and when Yaradua stopped protecting Ibori; this proposed contract will always end up syphoning billions of dollars into unknown foreign bank accounts at the expense of ordinary masses like you and i.

Our thieving non-leaders have a flair for delusions of grandeur. They go through the pomp and pagentry of dazzling the poor masses with promises of progress with 'white elephant' projects, which in long run, fizzles out into nothing.
Meanwhile no mention is ever made about the billions of dollars appropriated for the project. The money simply vanishes into thin air, and everyone seems to be afflicted with selective amnesia!

Classic princple of business. You simply put your commodity up for sale and wait for buyers to come and negotiate on the open market, not tie yourself to one single buyer, tried or not, which simply gives you less room to maneuver.

If Russia is still flaring their gas, what makes us think they can better manage ours?
If our leaders will simply think, we have enough expertise among our educated people to mange our resources, and we have the market among our own people to consume our products. All we need do, is to first put our house in order. prosecute our mega and unpatriotic thieves, and improve out infrastructures.

Then, we will see the foreigners compete over investments in a country.

I am not saying we should not sell. I mean in an ideal business situation, it would be great if we could do all this and gain much but I like to look at our past when I consider what we do in the present and where we might end up in the future with these. We are speaking of Nigeria here notorious for signing deal after deal yet not a single sign of process after each. I am afraid!!!

For decades, the country has flared, or burned off, most of its gas because of the lack of infrastructure and a tiny domestic market. But Nigeria has built a handful of multi-billion dollar gas export facilities in the past decade with the help of U.S. and European companies like Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Chevron Corp.

Nigeria is now a fast-growing gas exporter to the U.S. and Europe but still has a significant way to go to change its status as one of the world's biggest flaring countries. The government says a 2008 no-flare deadline for all companies operating in Nigeria remains in place and that financial penalties will be slapped on firms that don't meet the deadline.

Russia and Nigeria are the world's two largest gas-flaring nations. The senior Nigerian oil official said Russia was keen to assist Nigeria find commercial uses for its gas and to reduce flaring.

Not impressed with this dull move from Yaradua. Russia that is still flaring a lot of gas should go and solves its problems first. The Russian Track Record for Steel development in Nigeria is also a shame. Nigeria should partner better with Shell, Chevron and British Gas to complete Brass LNG and OKLNG ahead of schedule by creating an enabling environment.

Baba (Obj) laid a solid foundation for Gas in Nigeria. Yaradua is dissappointing with this move which I see as fraudulent as Russian companies do not have solid financial controls like US or European companies.

To widen the Gas market KOREA is a better target outside US and Europe.
