ezicat: I read the story again, just to make sure: there is something fishy here. Last time I checked, international students are allowed to work for up to 20 hours off campus during the school year, 40 hours (full time) in the summer. Has this law been revoked recently? Lemme check. Nope - you can work off-campus (there are a few restrictions like being a member of a participating institution and applying for an off-campus work permit, but you can do it. Maybe it doesn't apply to them because they're on scholarship?)

So that's issue 1. Issue 2 is that I find it difficult to believe that the students didn't know. As someone who was an international student in Canada, I can tell you quite clearly that it is stated in BOLD in your student visa that you are NOT allowed to work off-campus (on the student visa alone). I doubt that has changed.

So, unfortunately, I have to agree with those saying that the girls tried to apply the Nigerian mentality of circumventing the law for personal gain. And now, they're facing the consequences: I do hope the law is lenient with them - if they are first offenders AND if they didn't do anything shady like use someone elses name or info or lie on their job application.

Having said all this, I do understand how difficult it can be to get by as a student (scholarship or no scholarship) - if you need a bit of extra change to get by, you can do something personal, informal and irregular like babysitting kids (within your community) and getting paid cash for it. Not work at a national chain or a salaried job. What were they thinking?! That is a NO NO. It's essentially a way of trying to cheat the system. Doesn't usually work when outside of Nigeria, people. Shouldn't happen inside Nigeria, either.

Hi, sorry about the delay...

From what I know, graduate degrees are VERY competitive here. If you're paying for the Masters yourself, then you might get a chance with a second class upper and above; otherwise, probably only a first class would do.

Alternatively, you could try the colder, less populated areas that are keen on immigration like Manitoba and Saskatchewan (and perhaps Alberta).

As I mentioned before, I believe full time students can work in Canada (as long as they get an off-campus work permit!). Manitoba and Saskatchewan likely have provincial nomination programs to get international students to settle there. After a year or more of study, you should also be entitled to at least a year of work in any field related to your field of study.

All of the information can be found here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/ (with the internet, you no longer have to rely on hearsay). wink

This girls broke the law and without sentiments because they are Nigerian's should face the consequenses just like any other international student would face, its sad but thats the truth.

Canada is a very liberal country and rarely do you hear cases of people getting deported there(Canada was granting people with HIV Status papers some years ago and i am sure they still do it when the US was refusing them and thats why most peopple there crossed the border from the US into Canada) and thats why i know that this girls must have been serial offenders, and not like what they are portraying while pleading their cases.

If it is that bad i will advice them to seek asylum in the country, after all 60% of Nigerian's in Canada got their papers through ASYLUM,20% through the highly skilled prohramme and the last 20 came in through marriage or as students.

And lastly they are students from Nigeria so i dont see why they should be afraid of going back home,or they dont want to go back home?

Nigerian's are known law breakers of their Visa law(from child birth, overstay, working, crime)and what have you and when caught will start cry I AM A VICTIM CRY.

My advice to the girls?IF YOU CANT DO THE TIME(DEPORTATION)DONT DO THE CRIME(VIOLATING YOUR STUDENT VISA LAWS).

And on a lighter note,One of those girls fine sha,how far?if una dey read this mail i fit show come marry the dark skinned one and deportation matter go end,she make sense.

"Two Nigerian students living in Regina who've
been in trouble with immigration authorities are
being deported today, The University of Regina
students have been in hiding for more than a year, getting by with the help of friends.

On Friday, CBC News learned the students have
been escorted out of Saskatchewan. They're being flown to Toronto and are scheduled to be put on a plane to Nigeria tonight."

This should be a lesson to anyone travelling to Europe or America for studies. Do not violate the terms and conditions attached to your visas. The chances of getting caught is high.
