Four South African Universities ranked among the best 400 Universities around the globe in a recent ranking undertaken by Times Higher education, United Kingdom. In this year's ranking, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban joined three other consistent SA universities on the Times ranking. The ranking are as thus:

(1) University of Cape Town - 113th (Top 200)
(2) University of Witswatersrand - (between 226 and 250)
(3) Stellenbosch University (between 251 and 275)
(4) University of KwaZulu-Natal (between 351 and 400)

With this, the University of Cape Town retains and justifies its position as the best university in Africa for the umpteenth time. At least, five South African universities are also currently among the best in Africa. The rankings were based on indicators such as staff/student ratio, teaching reputation, number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees awarded, knowledge transfer, number of international students, research output and number of research citations.
