There are many ways:

1) Use javascript to open a small window, calling the onLoad function in the body tag of the page

2) Use DHTML to open a layer, calling same onLoad function

3) Using flash to open an (I think that is what it is called) eye blaster ad.

Option #1 is easier for pop-up blockers to detect. In #1 and #2, you would call the open() function.

To others who may respond to this: Have I missed anything?

Thanks,

One thing I should point out about pop-ups is that users hate seeing pop-ups they didn't initiate. There are other more subtle ways -- floating layers and inline frames that can achieve the same effect withou compromising the ultimate user experience.

(ripping all of what is left of my hair grin)

I hate those floating layers, which is one reason why I don't visit nigeriaworld.com anymore wink

So do you prefer pop-ups then?

I would have user-initiated pop-ups (or any other form of advertisement, again, as long as it is user-initiated).

Me too. I dislike an otherwise nice site which suddenly starts shooting popups everywhere. That's why I hate seeing anything tribalfusion.com and media.fastclick.net

My sentiments exactly. I just tune them out. Even flash ads that fill that expand when you mouse-over don't stand a chance nowadays. "Pop-ups" have become a dirty word. Avoid using them when you can.

Just put your ads on the side, out of the way so users don't avoid your site.

I hate pop-ups too! angry I think text ads is the best because they are unobtrusive. I am especially annoyed when I see reputable companies subscribing to this pop-up thingy. For example, why would AOL be using pop-ups to advertise? angry

Sometime we have no choice especially when cliensts ask for it. I actually enjoy the smiles on their faces when they experience a mouse over pop up in a demo. You give the client what they want.

Clients can be the most annoying creatures on earth -- they almost always want things that'll make people run away from their site.
