Times too many do we see Nigerians complaining about the government. Yes, our government is inefficient. There's no light. Our roads are horrible. We know. It's very easy for any one of us to list complaints and problems about our nation. Recalling good is difficult, but can we recall any good that we have done? I truly wonder.

What many of us fail to realize or remember, in my opinion, is that most of us are able bodied. We can make an impact with our own two hands if we wanted. It doesn't have to be big. Changing Nigeria isn't only by going JJ Rawlings on Aso Rock. We can teach languages. We can tutor children in mathematics, sciences, and other subjects. We can clean the community. The possibilities are endless.

Here is the definition of my favorite word (yes, I have a favorite word):

ALTRUISM - the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others.

With this I ask, what are you doing to improve Nigeria? Are you promoting change with a blog? Do you volunteer? What? Tell us!

I do not recall ever seeing a thread of this nature recently, so I'm starting this one. This can be an ongoing thread, where we check on one another to see how far along we are with our goals. It would also be a great means of networking and relationship-building, in order to help those around us. We know the famous saying, "I'm starting with the man in the mirror". We become who we want through change. You do not have to wait for someone else to change his or her ways of treating you. We can make Nigeria better than what it is now by a change in our behavior, starting with us. We have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

**EDIT**

Any words of encouragement or advice that will benefit us all will be quoted here. As more come up, this post will be modified. If I missed any, do let me know.

These came from fellow NLers

You have to work on and build yourself first, before you can think of giving back to the society.

"PEOPLE WHO CHANGED THE WORLD WERE BUSY PURSUING THEIR DREAMS AND PRACTICALIZING STUFFS THAT WILL YEILD RESULTS IN REAL LIFE,WHILE OTHERS WERE BUSY LIVING A LIE"

If u want to make a change, u must be open and be a listener. There is a lot of wisdom in it.

*I am training myself to never speak negative about my country Nigeria. When you speak/think negative, you will get negative results.

Anything is possible if the person in question is willing to put their life on the line to better the lives of others.

change can be slow but it is sure as long as you keep at it.

There is nothing more effective than making the people socially aware to think with their own minds on things. And that includes questioning the present value system.

I have young friends that run sucessful biznesses nd what i've learnt from them is (1) They never gave up regardless of what their environment threw at them (2) They belived in what they were doing.

They say there's a lot of opportunities in Africa b'cos there's a lot of problems. Just pick one problem and provide a solution and you are made. Its not as easy as it seems though but that shouldn't stop you from trying.

We will not benefit... if the thinking faculty/mentality of the Nigerian remains the same.

We need to face face reality and stop with the denial. When we realize there is a problem, only then can we face the problem.

I'll start with myself.

SHORT-TERM GOAL: Embark on a medical mission in Anambra. Every year, doctors residing in North America from Anambra do a medical mission during the summer of every year. I missed the deadline this year, so my goal is to go next year.

LONG-TERM GOAL: Finish my Health Science program, concentration in Community Health Education, and enter medical school. Obtain dual DO/MPH (Doctor of Osteopathy/Masters of Public Health, global health concentration) and practice here for a while, before returning to Nigeria to open two free clinics, one in Delta, another in Anambra, which will provide free basic health care and physicals.

Who's next?

Short term goals:finish my bachelor in petroleum engineering then proceed for my masters in petroleum engineering at Univeristy of texas.
I prefer working in Nigeria, become a renowned engineer(the best me(antigbagaun and misscorrection I know it should be I,no correction please)) can be in my field, get married,be the ideal and best husband for my wife and a wonderful father for my kids(this are the one's withing my immediate control,I have greater influence on them,to build the nigeria of our dreams,it begins with raising the best family)
When I get financial independent enough(I have the mark,as in net worth),I have decided to give a certain amount of my earnings to charity, community work etc.

PRIVATE VICTORY PRECEED PUBLIC VICTORY

LONG TERM
The ultimate destination is the Nigeria senate(Ekiti central senatorial district),if we have to build the Nigeria of our dream, then people with the right values and the best interest should take political offices.

Well this is a miniature of my constitution and mission statement.I have a more comprehensive one on how I want to acheive each one.

Well everything eventually boils down to Grace, ofcourse short term are within my control but long term.....sighs.

My contribution is to use my words to tell inspiring stories about unsung Nigerian heroes and to prove to cynics that regardless of how much we think lowly of ourselves, a few Nigerians can actually make a difference that even the world can admire!

Still an ongoing project, so watch out!

Short Term Goal - Make so much money so I can raise my Kids to be useful to society.. Also, set up a merit scholarship scheme for intelligent and gifted children in the South.. The number would be determined by the amount of money I have.. But it would be to train kids abroad in places like MIT, Havard and Princeton..

Long Term goal - Join Politics and become a state governor or the President... Reason being that some of the things that I feel are wrong in this country cant be fixed without being in power.. Example: Oppression of the poor and under-priviledged of our society by the rich and the politicians. They use their mobile police escorts to bully and intimidate the populace, drive against traffic, break the law at will and psychologically and physically oppress the citizens. This can only be stopped from the inside..

Short Term Goal: Talk about the problems of Nigeria and discuss ways of solving them.

Ling Term Goal: I intend promoting the positive image of Nigeria through the media. I currently own a small website that i'm still trying to groom. It will be the catalyst of greater things to come as far as promoting our image is concerned. I intend owning a global Nigeria TV station like CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera in the future. We need to tell the world who we are and not always leave it to them because they may not tell our story the way we want them to.

I also want to school the people of Nigeria the best way possible, so, i'm also looking at creating a school.

I'll also like to go into government whether as a politician or as a freelancer. I think i'll prefere the latter cos I don't wanna die.

I am doing what is required of me as a citizen, i obey traffic laws and other laws, i pay my tax as a business owner and i dont go lookin for govt work where a bribe will be demanded from me. I help as many as i can but all these all what you @op claim you do plus what you want us to do wont change nothing. If the man who has the constitutional authority to provide for the security and welfare of Nigetians is busy eating cassava bread and kain kain, and has no balls to arrest all those stealing the people's commonwealth and carting them abroad to live happily ever after, then all your effort plus mine will be nothing but a drop in the atlantic ocean. So while i agree that citizens ve a part to play, alsi believe that 96% of the change we need can only come from govt.

My immediate goal is to proceed for my Msc in the field of politics and my PhD to follow. I wanna be an expert in the field of political economy or development administration. I have just 6 years to achieve this.

My goal is to start a NGO which will be provide direction and knowledgeable inputs for people-oriented policies for governments at the local level. My ultimate goal is to shift the focus of every local government in Nigeria from just recruitment of personnel to service-delivery.

Hmmm...short term goal for me is to pack my bags and leave, its becoming like the only thing on my mind these days, I make my living online and presently just want to chill. Nigerian problems are too many and to think this is GEJ's first term. Before I out grow my youthful years, I want to feel and be a part of a functional society.

Long term goals are too numerous to mention but underlying score will be to make Nigeria a country I can be proud of, at worst my state will be transformed.

PAST EFFORTS: When i was still in Nigeria, i made sure i never threw dirt out on the road.
SHORT TERM GOALS: Speak to as many people as possible on the need to vote credible people and not along tribal/religious lines.

Short term goal: graduate from Engineering with a wonderful result...get the required expertise anywhere I can so I can become a world class engineer like Barth Nnaji...

Long term goal: join politics and contest for the position of the minister of science and technology, build factories, manufacturing centers and also research centers around the country where thousands of undergraduates can work and learn...then, contest for the position of state governor and transform my state - Anambra state to be one of the best states in Africa where standard of living is wonderful, where an average student can contest with other student in any part of the world and development in virtually every sector (agriculture, maritime, banking, education, especially the technological sector) can be felt and seen...(hopefully, politics won't be a do or die affair then) so help me God....

NO matter what you do to improve this country, PDP will definitely run you down because improvement /development is not in their policies.
