The Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), has ratified the long-expected merger with the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria and the All Nigeria Peoples Party.

A highly placed official of the party told PREMIUM TIMES that the decision to merge with other parties was approved at the party’s BOT meeting on Thursday.

He said at the end of the charged meeting, the hardliners within the CPC, who had opposed the merger all along, soft-pedalled and gave their blessing to the proposal.

The national leaders of the party such as General Muhammadu Buhari, Nasir El-Rufai and Tony Momoh were at the meeting.

With the ratification, our source said, the party will now proceed to consumate the merger talks it began with the ACN after the 2011 general election.

Efforts by the two parties to work together before that election fell through following disagreement over the choice of running mate for General Muhammadu Buhari.

The CPC National Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin, confirmed that the national executive committee of the party had received the BOT’s nod to proceed on the merger process.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Fashakin said the BOT gave the approval because none of the existing opposition party alone could defeat the ruling party.

“It is now clear that opposition parties must merge to be able to improve the educational system, health sector, security and infrastructure, among others for Nigerians,’’ he said.

He said that the party was ready to set up merger committee that would do the negotiation on its behalf.

The national publicity secretary said that CPC would soon commence membership registration to ascertain its strength nationwide as the exercise would help during the process of merger.

“When we put this in place in a couple of months, then we are set to discuss with our partners as regards the merger talks,’’ Fashakin said.

According to him, the party is definitely going to do a bio-metric process for its registration that will capture the bio metric data for its members.

He maintained that bio metric data would help the party to have an authentic data of the members to discover any forms of rigging in its primary and other electoral processes.

Mr. Fashakin urged Nigerians to use lessons learnt from the recent U.S. election to improve the standard of democracy in Nigeria.

I hope discussions start on time. GMB's outlook is quite different from Tinubu's, they may need a lot of consultation to forge a good understanding. ANPP and ACN shouldn't be too difficult to merge.

Buhari and Tinubu are very odd combination. It's like light and darkness. CPC should have carried on alone. It's not all about winning elections. It shuld be about ideology.

A Fashola & Ribadu ticket will mark d dawn of a new era, power shift and EVOLUTION of a new Nigeria; IF the merger works, there's a slim chance of PDP winning any polling unit on the platform of either rigging or merit.

Nigeria is heading for a 2-party system if the merger goes ahead. The smaller parties will either dissolve into the two parties or die natural deaths. A 3rd party may emerge, though, formed by dissidents from the two parties. But there is no guarantee that good governance will be enhanced because it is human beings that drive the system, not parties. There4, if politicians remain corrupt and irresponsible we will get nowhere.

Save the Religion and Igbo factor, this appears to be a very powerful combination provided Tinubu and Buhari fully work for them. Fashola to face administration while Ribadu faces tackling corruption.

I agree, these 2 progressives can begin the salvation of Nigeria, but the electoral body need to be independent first and election riggers prosecuted.

You really think that America is a two party democracy. There are political parties that exist without the chances of winning elections at the center. They represent an ideology. Even in Nigeria, the National Conscience Party knows that it cannot win a Presidential election.. You don't have to be the president to serve.

You are wrong with your analysis.. Ribadu did not win a single state in North in last election meaning he is not acceptable by northerners while Fashola is only popular in southwest giving Jonathan his best chance to win in free and fair election... My view

Assuming people don’t vote based on tribal biases and also assuming that PDP will not rig the election as usual. PDP is the Nigerian Taliban, right up there with Boko Haram.

My dream ticket is Fashola – Pat Utomi 2015. I don’t care who is president and who is vice.

Again this whole merger sounds good and dandy until its time to nominate a presidential candidate.

All the best to them...
