JNI, CAN Clash On Removal Of Army Commandants by lekanolas: 2:32pm On Dec 05, 2012
An Islamic organisation, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, yesterday rejected the removal of Commandants of Armed Forces and Staff College, Air Vice-Marshal Adullahi Kure, and the Corps of Infantry, Maj.Gen. Muhammad Isa.

The group said that their replacement by non- Muslims as heads of the military formations was suspicious.

But the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in 19 northern states and Abuja yesterday called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the military authorities to disregard JNI stand on the removal of ex-Jaji military commandants over the blasts that killed 15 Christian worshippers.

cIn a statement entitled, “The removal of the two Jaji officers” by JNI Secretary- General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, and made available to our correspondent yesterday, the organisation said the removal of the two officers were “rushed against the nature of military known to be careful in handling sensitive issues of national interest.”

The former commandants were removed by the Defence Headquarters following the recent Sunday’s twin-car bomb attacks at St. Andrew’s Military Protestant Church in the military base, killing at least 15 worshippers with scored of injured victims.

The Defence Headquarters had in a statement on Saturday named Maj.- Gen. K.C. Osuji as the new Commandant of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps and Air Vice-Marshal E.E. Osim as the new Commandant of the Command and Staff College.

But JNI said the attempt to politicise the security breach along religious and ethnic divides would cripple not only the military but the nation’s security system.

The JNI statement reads: “The fact that the two officers who were swiftly removed were Muslims, and were replaced by two officers who are non-Muslims makes any discerning observer to be suspicious of the motives behind the whole exercise.

“It is our sincere concern to which we make bold to state that any attempt at politicising the issue of security in Nigeria will not only worsen our security situation but will also continue to polarise the military family and the entire security system along religious and ethnic divides, something that would not augur well for the future of our dear nation.

“While reiterating our condemnation of the blasts and emphasising the need for the immediate thorough investigations into the matter, we want to state that the immediate removal of the two officers does not speak well of the military who are hitherto known to be careful and objective in dealing with sensitive issues of national interest.

“We cannot comprehend why the use of two different approaches to addressing the same issue. Nigerians may not understand why the two Jaji officers be removed in connection to the blasts even before any proper investigation, while no immediate posting out could follow the bombings at the 1 Mechanised Division and the Police Headquarters which preceded it.

But the Northern CAN’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sunday Oibe, blamed JNI for dragging religion into the ongoing war against terrorism.

CAN said: “If truly the respected Muslim organisation, Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, said the removal of Jaji military commandants has religious motive is unfortunate because we should not drag religion into the security situation in this country.

“When former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Charles Soludo, tenure ended who is in charge now, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi? Who is the Inspector- General of Police now? Is it not Mohammed Abubakar?”

CAN added that the JNI statement on the removal of Jaji commandants was divisionary because the same group said that Boko Haram was not a religious group.

CAN, however, called on security agencies to monitor religious leaders closely.

“Those military officers posted to Jaji are they not qualified? President Goodluck Jonathan, the military should not be distracted in their efforts to end Boko Haram.

“Christians are being killed on daily basis that does not disturb JNI. JNI should tell Nigerians if they are behind Jaji military church blast if not they should focus on their religious activities for the good of humanity rather than telling military what to do,” CAN stated.

I love this part, ok can they tell us if they're behind it or not. If not, why the hell do they care? Christians are killed in their tens and hundreds, they did not see nor speak out, YET, when their commandants are removed, they make loudest noise.

Though the leader of CAN has been a subject of scrutiny, nonetheless, we must all stand together and speak out against injustice. I strongly stand behind CAN on this one, they have my full support.

Great move by defense headquaters. I suggest that all muslims be removed from any security org until Boko Haram goes to hell. They are sabotaging the security situation in this Country.
All they care about is Muhammed and Blood.

The Commander-in-Chief has decided. Let us leave it at that. In the military you do not protest routine postings and that is what those gentlemen signed for.

In a civilized setting, those commanders wont have to wait to be removed.
They'll honorably resign.
what happened was a big slap to the military's face.

Sometimes i wonder what is wrong with jni. They tend to cry out when they felt islam is been hurt. One can imagine the reaction of these islamists if a mosque is bombed.

The military is sowing disunity in its own rank? After all blame should b e aportioned after an investigation rather than rushing to play religious games.

The removal of two top military commanders in Jaji on Saturday is drawing sharp reactions from several quarters, including the JNI and senior security officials who allege the decision was tinged with religious bias.

Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Air Vice Marshal Abdullahi Kure and the Corps Commander, Infantry, Major General Muhammad D. Isa, were removed over the twin blasts that killed 15 people at a church in the Jaji Military Cantonment a week earlier.

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) pointed out in a statement in Kaduna yesterday that the speed with which the commanders were removed was never noticed in previous bombings of military formations.

On Saturday, Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim named Air Vice Marshal E. E. Osim to replace AVM Kure at AFCSC and directed Major General K. C. Osuji to act as Corps Commander, Infantry.

JNI Secretary-General Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu said yesterday the fact that the two officers who were swiftly removed are Muslims, and were replaced by two officers who are non-Muslims, makes any discerning observer to be suspicious of the motives behind the exercise.

“While reiterating our condemnation of the blasts and emphasising the need for the immediate thorough investigations into the matter, we want to state that the immediate removal of the two officers does not speak well of the military who are hitherto known to be careful and objective in dealing with sensitive issues of national interest,” he said.

“We cannot comprehend why the use of two different approaches to addressing the same issue. Nigerians may not understand why would the two Jaji officers be removed in connection to the blasts even before any proper investigation?”

He added: “It is our sincere concern to which we make bold to state, that any attempt at politicising the issue of security in Nigeria will not only worsen our security situation but will also continue to polarise the military family and the entire security system along religious and ethnic divides, something that would not augur well for the future of our dear nation.

Also yesterday, a senior security official gave an insight into the way the Jaji matter was treated and said it gives room for suspicion of religious bias.

He said before the explosions at Jaji, the cantonment had one Commander and four Commandants and that all the five were in charge of independent formations.

These are AFCSC headed by Kure, Infantry Corps Centre under Isah, Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI) headed by Major General Osuji as Commandant, Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre with Major General Zaruwa as Commandant and Warrant Officers Academy with Brigadier General Ukagu as Commandant.

After the explosions, Kure was removed and replaced with Osim from the South South, while Isah was removed and replaced with the Commandant of NASI, Osuji.

Two boards of inquiry are currently investigating the incident and none has concluded its assignment, the security source said.

He said in military tradition, blame is never apportioned before the outcome of investigations.

He added that where there is more than one leader in a military location, the responsibilities and limits of liabilities of each leader is clearly defined.

In Jaji cantonment, Commander of the ICS is the Cantonment Commander and is responsible for overall security, he said, adding if he was to be removed over the incident this should not have come before investigations are concluded.

The security official cited the case of the Major General Nasamu who is still Army Headquarters Garrison Commander two years after the Christmas Eve explosion at the Mammy Market of the Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja.

He said removing Major General Isah before the end of investigations “is suspect” and could be a vendetta by superior officers, adding that Kure’s removal could be a red herring.

The source said Kure’s removal just two weeks after he assumed duty as AFCSC chief and leaving the other three commandants cannot be explained since Kure too cannot be blamed for the explosions.

He said the removal of Kure along with Isah could be interpreted as religiously biased since both are Muslims and are replaced by non-Muslims, placing all the five Jaji formations under non-Muslims.

The source also raised some questions on why General Isah and General Shoboki of 1 Mechanised Division were removed after explosions in their formations when General Nasamu is still in his position two years after the blast at the Mogadishu Cantonment.

Attempts by Daily Trust to get comments from the Army Headquarters and the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on the issues raised over the Jaji officers were not successful yesterday.

Director of Army Public Relations Brigadier General Mobolaji Koleoso and the Director of Defence Information Colonel Mohammed Yerima could not be reached by telephone.

Exactly!.

There is a hidden move behind this.

If the jaji commanders have to go, why on earth should the Chief of Army staff be allowed to continue in his position.

Ihejirika and the SSS get the lion share of the 1trillion Naira allocated to Security in the Land but yet, they have nothingg to show for it, the security situation is above them.

Infact, there have bn suggestions that the COAS and the SSS head are partly involved in Boko-Haram activitiees cos it makes way for the ridiculous budget into their pockets.

GEJ should watch out!.
