The movie ‘Awakening’ tells the story of a young man whose life changes after a series of fatal dreams which come true. With the help of an ambitious journalist, he is able to uncover the truth about his dreams and the truth about their lives.

The director, James Omokwe, a graduate from UNILAG with a degree in Theatre arts, is seeking to bring change to this genre of film in the Nigerian movie industry. It is the first movie in Nigeria that 5.0 surround sound, believable special effects, great acting and animation!

I read on oloriSuperGal that the Awakening team started shooting the movie with a total of N50, 000, that’s $318 (Three hundred and eighteen US Dollars)! The fact that they did not have money did not act as a deterrent, instead, it served as a fuel for them to be more creative and come up with more resourceful ways to complete their project. Although, the shoot had to be halted several times as a result of a lack of funds, the actors and crew were gracious enough to keep making time and changing their schedules to accommodate the awakening because they had as much belief in it as the creators.

The official trailer was unveiled at Lagos Comicon a week ago with rave reviews from other movie directors, visual effects specialists and event participants. The Awakening Premieres in Nigeria on January 11.

As a fan of thrillers, I am most definitely going out of my way to watch this one!

Ooooo.....I'm definitely watching this!!!!!

Nollywood is now promising. They've started making quality dramas for quite sometime now and I also believe they are now matured for special effects. The only thing left is for the movie industry to set up a proper regulatory agency and quality control to drive all those 'idumota, alaba market and pound road' guys out of the industry. Lol....

It definitely looks promising smiley

As for those Alaba guys well its their daily bread, hahaha. The problem is everyone is doing the same thing. If one man makes money selling EVERYBODY wants to sell. They don't think of other other marketing and distribution strategies to tap into and make it work. However, yes we do need a proper regulatory body.

Nigeria should stop making movies, everything they make is senseless, no good plot/storyline, no good directing, no proper editing and continuity, just potraying fake characters that doesn't truly represent the country.

Just look at this movie, it started with just $318 then you tell me the movie will make sense. $318 my God!
Re: Trailer Of "Awakening": A Nigerian Dark Thriller by Nobody: 9:27pm On Dec 06, 2012
The movie soundtrack is foolish! Gaddem. angry

Would be nice to have a Nigerian thriller but fix the music!

My friend, be quiet if you have nothing to say. Aren't there big box movies that hundreds of thousands if not millions of $$$ were spent on, yet, they flopped? The story plot has nothing to do with the amount spent on a movie, the money is just used to develop a better theme about the movie.

For instance, the movie Mr and Mrs, that movie was the best I've seen in a while. I'll bet not so much was spent on it, but it came out great. Learn to appreciate, Nollywood is gradually improving, though we have a long way - a journey of a thousand mile starts with a single step.

James Omokwe, wherever you are. . .thank you for showing it can be done.

Now this is what happens when you leave the movie producing to people who actually understand what it is about instead of marketers who just wanna make a quick buck.

Good for James Omokwe!! Bravo!

Out of everything you read just the bit about the money provoked you into this rant? Well, there are good movies, directors and actors in Nigeria. Not sure what you've been watching.

A trailer is supposed to be a synopsis, all I see is a compilation of very random scenes.

I appreciate positive things, Nollywood is not improving, it is depreciating, now all they think of is profit and nothing else, they don't think of quality, artistery, or any other thing just money. A Nollywood movie producer will use a million naira to make 5 films and split them into four (45 mins) parts unlike movies of years ago that made great sense, you learnt good lessons from them.

And no movie budget greatly impacts the storyline of a movie, having a storyline is one thing, then having the required budget to bring the characters to life is another. Don't tell me that James Cameron would have made avartar with a low budget.

Well my friend, I haven't seen any good Nollywood movie in like 5 years although I haven't really watched many Nollywood movies.

Yes this movie may be good but based on my experience, I highly doubt it. Once in a while, I choose to watch Nigerian movies so I look for movies that feature the biggest Nollywood stars like Genevieve, Rita Dominic, mercy Johnson, ini edo, Jim iyke etc because I feel if anybody makes good movies, it has to be this guys. this guys are the best there are and will not
accept a senseless script but to my amazement, I am always proved wrong time and again.

You see a movie, you can't really pin point what the movie is all about, sometimes a movie begins in one direction, and then half way through the movie, they just change course, they whole story takes a new turn totally unrelated to what they began with and worst of all, you can predict the movie plot 8 out of 10 times.

No doubt Nollywood loves to disappoint but not all are bad. Movies like Mr & Mrs, Last Flight to Abuja, Mrs Somebody, Lions of 76, IJE, Amina, The Meeting, to name a few are good movies so I can't give up entirely based on the bad ones.

How can you not mention my dearly beloved phone swap? undecided kiss. The production of that movie was so cool that I had to search about it. I got to know the bugdet for the movie(a romantic comedy) is this close to that of last flight to abuja (a suspense thriller)...lol....you've got to watch the movie. Just that I doubt you seeing it online (iroko grin ).....incase of 'incasity' ,I heard it will have a re-run this month or there about.

@ 50Calibre - Don't get me wrong I agree $318 does seem like a very small amout of money to make a film but it can be done. They only way they made it on a budget so small is by everyone involved having a 'real love' for filmmaking and a dedication & zeal to do something 'new & good'. Even the 'western world' has pretty good low-to-no budget films that get released.
This seems to be a very exciting project just because of the team involved. If you can get a group of 20 people that madly want to make something good for no money - they can. It is pretty obvious that this is a group of dedicated people with good skills that didn't sit around waiting for millions of Naira before venturing out to make something with their skills. This should be encouraged. I dabble into filmmaking a bit and know that the 'right' group of people with skills and already-owned equipment can make something very good.
@ Your second referenced post - If you have not seen Nollywood movies for 5yrs then you have missed a number of pretty good films. People are learning everyday and going out there to make better work.

@ SomeGirl - Fair enough Nollywood has not yet mastered the art of trailer making but I'm sure you could guess the general story?

Re: Trailer Of "Awakening": A Nigerian Dark Thriller by omenogo: 8:36am On Dec 07, 2012
the article says they 'started' with $318, not that the entire movie was shot with that amount.movies have flaws:'Troy' had an aeroplane in one of the scenes and it was supposed to be set in the dark ages, paranormal activity was shot with practically nothing and has grossed millions of dollars, to mention a few. Sometimes, people need to see beyond their self-righteous garb and just appreciate the little things. Nollywood is getting better and besides, if you haven't seen a Nollywood movie in 5 years, then your opinion, strong as it may be, just doesn't count.

I have just seen the trailer and I have to say thumbs up. Nollywood is surely growing. Yes there might be a few mistakes here and there but from what i see it's still a good effort unlike the trash that the alaba/idumota boys churn out. A friend of mine had asked if there were enough cinema quality movies to necessitate opening a cinema dedicated to Nigerian movies but with movies like this and others like lions of 76, phone swap, heroes and zeroes, hoodrush, Jim and Joan etc. I think those fears are slowly going away. Once the distribution side can be fixed and investors are assured of getting their money back there will be more good movies coming out because of I know of guys with some bad ass scripts(Moi included) and some intending investors. This was how the music industry re organised themselves and I see a similar thing happening in the film industry.
