In 2010 President Goodluck Jonathan Commissioned Akanu Ibiam (Enugu) International Airport. In his remark during the ceremony, Jonathan said he has always considered himself close to the Igbo because of the circumstances of his birth and education. But today, the Place looks like a Civil war zone. There is nothing
International about it.
Akanu Ibiam International Airport, also known as Enugu Airport, is an airport serving Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State of Nigeria. The airport is named after the late Akanu Ibiam (1906-1995), a Medical Doctor and Statesman who hailed from Afikpo in Ebonyi State.
The airport was closed on February 10, 2010, by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for the first phase of major renovation and expansion works. The airport was re-opened on 16 December, 2010, but the second and third phase of the construction works remains an ongoing/unfinished project. They promised the airport is being prepared for its new status as international airport.
Okukuwe ibiam wrote today that if pressure is not brought on the authorities to complete what they initiated, we definitely have an eyesore on our hands.
According to him, "the departure hall looks like a refugee station. You can peer through or sit on the Uncompleted windows, enjoy the the dry dusty air wafting in and have a direct physical appreciation of the runway with flights come in and out. Nothing really stops you from jumping through the windows and Hugging the plane, if your arms are long enough.
"You can circumvent customs by going through the departure hall windows straight to your flight, the place begs for mischief.
"The arrival hall looks like it was recently bombed and cleared of debris. Dirt floor! Conveyor belts? wait for the 25th century! You pick your luggage directly from the Tarmac.
"If you are carrying a luggage or multiple luggages, you need helpers to help you push it up the uncompleted cement steps for a fee. and when exiting the arrival hall, you need them to help guide the carriage down onto a wooden plank and Hold the descending truck or else your luggage will spill on the surroundings, or straight into the waiting reception, who warily step out of your way with your nervous steering and balancing act.
"By the time you pick your luggage up, you'll be as brown as the surrounding dry muddy Enugu landscape. Then you are dusting. Only to see your reception pulling exited luggage towards the car park, with greetings of Chei! Nno! Afuro kwam gi."
When President Goodluck Jonathan approved the assignment and deployment of Mrs. Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi (Anambra), to the Ministry of Aviation, many thought Jonathan appears hell-bent (and rightly so) that the internationalization of Enugu airport be completed in his regime.
Jonathan promised the Igbos that the upgrade of the airport to an international airport and the extension of its runway are part of the Federal Government’s airport rehabilitation programme, designed to improve the state of infrastructure at the nation’s 21 airports.
Thus they naively believed he reposted an Igbo person to man (or is it woman) the aviation ministry in the belief that if an Igbo is not in charge, it is bye bye to an international airport for Enugu.
How wrong they were!
South Eeast comes last in GEJ's mind, he knows how to massage our ego and walk freely without doing anything concrete; like closing whole markets to honour Ojukwu at death and we are happy!
How many Gigantic projects are going on in SE ? Yet, our people are already endorsing him for 2015!
Welcome to Enugu, Welcome to Biafra, Sorry Nigeria.

Sincere 9gerian: SEE-NO-GOOD and HEAR-NO-GOOD propagandist can say whatever they like. What did the southeast get from 8yrs of OBJ and 3yrs of Yar Adua (11 solid years in all)? The very few roads that we saw their construction began were uncompleted in 11yrs:
1) Enugu-Onitsha road started, uncompleted (after 11yrs),
2) Onitsha-Owerri road, uncompleted after 11yrs.
Can anyone remind us of any other project that was started or done in the southeast in those 11yrs of locust?
GEJ is less than 2yrs in office: Onitsha-Owerri road and Aba-Owerri have been completed.
Several other highways in the east are either being repaired or re-constructed. The Enugu and Owerri airport are being re-modelled. Workers at the Enugu airport may have gone on christmas break but nobody can deny that work has been going on there for sometime.
Arrangement has been made to build international terminal at 5 airports, including Enugu(after re-modelling work is completed).
Onitsha port was also completed and commissioned recently be Mr president.
Serious work is going on the eastern rail line.
Construction of 2nd niger bridge will commence next yr.
Unlike under OBJ and Yar Adua, incompetent PDP governors were not imposed on the southeast. Under GEJ, Peter Obi won election for 2nd term, defeating PDP and other parties(Ngige formula was not used). Rochas won in Imo state, defeating an incumbent PDP govt. The president did not step in to make it a do-or-die affair and impose Ohakim on Imo people, whether they liked it or not.
Anyway, when GEJ completes his first term come 2015, the HATERS can come so we can compare notes

my brother/sister i dont want you to read tribalism into this,it is the same story the whole country over, which project or projects have this people ever completed east, west or south even the north.it is the same project since the past twenty years that they are re awarding and awarding.Benin-Lagos road has always been awarded since i was in primary three(3)and now in my late thirties.from shagari to Obj,to buhari,Babangida,Yaradua,Jonathan etc. it is the same old wine in new bottle.Awarding contract without completion is the name of the Game.May god save us from the Looters called Leaders.

Thesame GEJ went on air in november mandating FERMA to fix the roads in preparation for the yuletide and in just a space of one month, foreign contractors to FERMA were able to fix a big chunk of Enugu-Ph expressway. GEJ's problem is lack of will and decisiveness. I know that after the yuletide, the remaining portions of that road will be handled after 2015.

I was actually looking for those your pictures to repost just to shame the @op and all those talking trash on this thread. As much as it is good to criticise government so they can perform, it is ridiculous that NL is now filled with political jobbers posing as social critics, the likes of dayokanu, oyb and other tribal bigots and trolls. The House of Rep committee on Aviation headed by an Igbo woman has given an appreciation to Minister of Aviation for the Pace of the projects under her watch in aviation sector. Is enugu international airport remodelling not part of the projects? Who is in better position to tell us what is happening?Or must ACN supporters listen to the voice of people who are disgruntled for one reason or the other? The same House of Rep that always oppose this regime acknowledged that great works are going on in aviation(Enugu airport included).

I travelled through Port Harcourt and wept at the poor level of work being done there, if you look at the laying of those fanciful roof structure, shame will just come upon you. If they really were sincere they would have just left the old buildings and started a totally new terminal but alas they are reconstructing and remodeling an old building they say perhaps at the cost of a new one.

The problem with many of us is that we do not travel and we also do not watch documentaries show casing industrial growth in other countries, truth be told there is really no standard airport terminal in Nigeria, these remodelling abi reconstruction sham will still not make an impact. We do have world class landing air strips though.
Re: Where Is Gej's Enugu "International Airport"? by ezeagu(m): 4:43pm On Dec 27, 2012
The old-Port Harcourt terminal was cramped and hot. You couldn't tell if you were at an airport or a sheltered market, especially when you are arriving. There's a lot of hassle at the airport right now, but most people are for the expansion since the old building was much less than good enough. Some people wouldn't even mind that zinc roof in the picture, even though the whole building seems like it's still a skeleton.

If they are going to do to these cities what they did to Lagos domestic, then people will be more than happy.
