the things you people are talking about, i don't have the hardware - or the light for that matter (i.e. NEPA isn't reliable enough) - to try out
besides i don't understand how streaming works; couldn't you just use your linux box as a file server and play the files instead? anyway i don't know anything about DLNA
Re: Ubuntu Linux by EvilBrain1(m): 7:43pm On Jan 08, 2011
Evil Brain:
New question. I just got myself a playstation 3 and an HDTV for christmas. I'm now thinking of turning my old desktop into a media server so I can stream movies and music to the PS wirelessly using DLNA. Most people I know use windows media player or media center, but I don't want to reinstall windows.

What's the most hassle-free way of doing this in Linux? For those of you who've done this, which program did you use? I've heard of Moovida and MythTV and google suggested a program called PS3MediaServer but I've never tried any of them before. I'm hoping to set it up this weekend, but I don't have much time to experiment (my office has been killing me with work.)
Done some more research. Apparently, you can't use Moovida as a server. My options are MythTV, TVersity, PS3MediaServer, MediaTomb, and XBMC. There's a few others but these seem to be the most commonly used and PS3MediaServer is apparently the most popular. I'm still at work so I haven't done it yet, but I'll tell you how it goes whenever I get round to it.

@4ller You need a very good wireless router to be sure the signal gets everywhere in your house. If you want to record satellite TV, you'll probably need a PC with a DVB-S tuner card plus a smart card reader. DSTV recently married each of their smart cards to one single decoder so there might be added problems with them. I've never tried it do I don't really know.
Before you buy the tuner card you could try finding out which satellite and which transponder DSTV or HiTV uses so you can email the manufacturer or ask them in their forums whether it works. Plus I'm sure other people must have done the same thing if not in Naija, then in SA so try googling it.

I want to try this Ubuntu. How do I start?
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 3:32am On Jan 15, 2011
@prettyG
well first of all you have to obtain an installation cd; you can download the image (iso file) from the ubuntu site and burn to cd, or if you have the patience you can order (they'll deliver for free) but it might take some time; else if you can get one of us (ubuntu users) living near enough to you such a person could give you a cd, perhaps even help you install ubuntu on your computer

This might be useful to anybody whose is finding it difficult to use the new MTN fastlink Huawei E1550 modem to work with Ubuntu, by default Ubuntu sees it as a storage device, but following the steps will get you going:

For 8.10 you need udev-extras, you don’t need this for 10.04 onwards:
sudo apt-get install udev-extras

Add a udev rule:
gksu gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/15-huawei-e1550.rules

What we’re doing is telling udev that when this device is plugged in to switch its mode.  Paste this and save:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb",
SYSFS{idProduct}=="1446",
SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1",
RUN+="/lib/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type option-zerocd"

On next insertion, Network Manager’s mobile broadband configuration assistant will run

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 7:37pm On Jan 19, 2011
dude, so u still remember this thread? lol

that evo is still alive? wow!!!

the only thing that will run on that thing is puppylinux, and maybe slax.

recommend puppy tho, they have a thriving forum but am pretty sure the only issues u will have is commonsense one based on gettin used to the layout. remember ur ALWAYS ROOT.

get the newest release 5.2. it now also uses debs from ubuntu repos so u can get r fav apps, tho stick to light, ur ram is atrocious.

do a hard drive install, ur ports are 1.0 and d cd drive probably wonky. i do drive installs with no issues
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 12:53pm On Jan 20, 2011

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 1:44pm On Jan 20, 2011
browsing on puppy is very very ok! i even got yf and iwp working on mine sef.

just get a browser if u dont like seamonkey. recommend chrome or midori cos of ur ram. even chrome sef is probably too heavy for it, lolz

u will need to get java installed for all dt sha o. check dem forum for prepared .pets of java. or better just subscribe jeje and install all u need.

Hello peeps i want to get started with linux but have no experience with it whatsoeve how do i get started and what learning resources do i seek.

Hello no responce anyone? I could really use somehelp/push/info/data here because i just learnt i have an opportunity to work closely with another department /section of the firm i work for on a really big project we just landed and are project planning for but my knowledge of linux or lack of it is a drawback for me.i really want to be on that project it has all the signs of being one of those projects that could boost ones carrear as well as the rich experience that comes from being a team member of a project combining diverse technical specialties.
I v been adviced to start up with CompTIA Linux+ training and certification which takes about seven weeks with some of the training centers in lag.im considering starting this weekend.i was told that training in a structured manner helps me avoid knowledge gaps that could occur if i self-studied specially as time is of the essence.
I just wanted to know if there was any truth/logic to the sentiment above?
Common people pls help a newbie find his feet.i ll take the time to walk myself.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Ubuntu Linux by lynxnoon(m): 12:04pm On Feb 09, 2011
@EMANY01
i would advice to go on with the training as planned.
As for this thread, what we usually advice newbies is to read through th whole thread,. . . yes, the whole thread, cos that way there's nothing u'll encounter when using ubuntu that has not been talked about wink
As u begin to use ubuntu don't hesitate to post problems/difficulties u encounter along the way.
Cheers

Thanks lynxnoon.I dont mean to errr irritate but iv got to ask is ubuntu totally linux.i mean is it the best recomendation for a total beginer like me(if that can be said) as i have gleaned that there are so many versions of linux.Basically where do i build my foundation(s) kind of like how it used to be said that one who learns to drive using a manual car is grounded .
Iv read a good number of the pages posted though i did skip a couple of them and skimed through others , ill be going through these pages again.

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 4:19am On Mar 01, 2011
err i really dunno o. guess its cos its new and unfinished but the design just looks out of place for a full blown computer, however that being said, aint NOBODY gonna say this looks like windows, and im willing to bet that windows for tablets is gonna copy this thing.

thats said, i guess its fine for a netbook or a slate, lets see what the finished thing is besides this is the 2D desktop, i read that there is supposed to be the main 3D desktop that looks exactly like this one too but functions a bit different and has more eyecandy and effects ( it sure could do with effects)

what i find most jarring for now is the file manager. the design is all smooth and pretty till u open the file manager and u get the same old nautilus look! had to change my background to black to compensate and i stil havent figured out how to change the icon set. i think they need to redesign the nautilus look to look exactly the same or at least integrate better with the menu and workspaces look.

that being said, i may be wrong because all iv done is install the 2D desktop on my already pimped gnome and from past desktops addition experience, they always jar themselves. all in all its not bad, not bad at all and definitely adds identity. this looks nothing like any other os. and somebody pls tell mint crew to get rid of that windows like menu they use

aaha now we see what the mint team will do, shebi they have been making mouth and insulting canonical, let the mumus build their own desktop now or they will keep maintaining gnome 2, they think modifying an already made desktop/os is a sign of genius, woe betide them if they ever come out with unity desktop, i will make life unbearable for them on that their site, ingrates
