We have so many illitrates on Nl and the few educated ones know little about inter-states relations. The westphalia treaty sets out the relations among states based on sovereignity while the treaty of utretcht sets out the balance of power among them.what we forget to realise is that Nigeria and Russia are both sovereigb states irrespective of their size, population, economic or military might.
Russia only has more power than Nigeria because it is a veto-wielding nation of the united nations and one of the five that can independently start a war.Now let's look at it,what has Nigeria done to warrant an attack ? The russia would only strain relations with Nigeria and nothing will happen. The US has threatened to cut off aids to Nigeria if it eventually banned homosexuality but Nigeria still maintained her stand and nothing happened. If Nigeria jailed the Russian, the government of Russia will only come and dialogue with Nigeria, possibly bribing for their release.

P.s
The united states of America paid the sanction imposed on Di*ck Cheney former vice president of the UD for his complicity in the haliburton case to the Nigerian government and heaven didn't fall.

The most sensible posts in this thread.
When you read through this thread, you will see the way an average Nigerian thinks, and you know our leaders are picked from among us, you should not be baffled at the kind of leaders we have.

So the Russians demand the return of their sailors? Let them lodge a complaint with our Foreign. We've dealt with far worse threats.

Anyway, I suggest the FG hands over the Russians in exchange for a number of Nigerians held up in Russian gulags. But confiscate the ship and all weapons found in it.

Excellent post my brother. What the clowns on NL fail to realise is that we've done way worse, yet the world hasn't ended. Read up on the history of your country's foreign policy. You think the Federal Republic of Nigeria is some ordinary country you can push over? We openly opposed the Americans and UNITA in Angola and provided weapons covertly to ZANU-PF in their fight against the then British supported Rhodesian govt. We also vehemently opposed the Americans again during the 2nd Gulf War. Did the Earth end on all three counts. Yet some fools think that we'll be punished by the Russians for arresting a bunch of criminals. What the hell are they going to do? Send Alpha/vympel or other spetnaz unit to break out a bunch of criminals? Impose sanctions? Abegi..

The Nigerian government should also demand the release of Nigerians in Russian jails in exchange for the Russian sailors.
If the Russians reject this request, then GEJ should allow the Law to take its course.

why is it that libya had to release those bulgarian nurses that infected babies wit HIV? The fact that the powerful sergei lavrov is involved in this saga is a cause for great concern. Do u think cos of ur useless numbers u can witstand a blitzkreig? Chechnya was far mor determined but how did it end up:a russian puppet. We cannot just release these sailors just because Russia is a World Power if it wants to go out of hand and i know Nigeria cant stand them in war then we transfer the case to the international court

So it's military now. No wahala. First of all, we both agree that Russia is a world power and an energy super power.

But here's a few questions:
-Do you really think the Russians will be so stupid to lunch a military campaign against Nigeria over a bunch of criminals?

-Let's say they intend to launch military campaign, how do they intend to project that military power down to west africa? Please do tell.

-The German blitz of WW2 involved the use of Panzer groups to punch through Europe. Let's say the Russian intend to adopt such tactics, were do they intend to use as a staging ground/base? Benin, a friendly country in a regional bloc dominated by Nigeria, and one with French protection? Cameroun, Chad, or Niger, French satellites?

A good student of International Relations would also advise the Nigerian government to seek concessions from Russia, such as an exchange of prisoners etc.
This would show that leadership of Nigeria is not a wimpy one.

After designing the TU-22, the Tupolev design bureau started working on a new bomber that was based on the TU-22. Initially Tupolev considered modifying the TU-22 by changing the angle of the swept wings and equipping it with more powerful engines. However after developing the design "106" and various analysis, the design did not meet the flight characteristic requirements. Tupolev also developed the design "125". The aircraft was supposed have two VK-6 engines, a range of 4500-4800 km and an operating speed of up to 2500 km/h. The design provided for the use of titanium alloys and advanced electronic systems.

If I am one of you people, I would be more afraid of this:

Certainly, Russians will not use an ICBM just because of a few sailors, but you should realise that stuff can reach Nigerian soil within 20 to 25 minutes after launch from Russian territory. Other, less aggressive things they could do, is to deal more harshly with Nigerian citizens arrested in Russia for one thing or the other, or to reduce international trade with Nigeria (which isprobably measured in millions if not billions of dollars.

Have you also wondered why the lockerbie bomber was released to Ghadaffi by the british ? You know why, libya got the oil and the british needed the oil,so they sort of swap the guy for oil and military contracts and that is how things get done in the international system since no nation is self-sufficent.Syria,iran and other hardline countries have alliance or some sort of treaties with Russia in case of any attack on them, which is why an attack on syria or iran could disrupt world peace.Besides, russia is only withholding her vote with china against possible military intervention in syria.so kini big deal

Nigeria can only beg for their release but russia can threaten us for their own release, you see, there are two angles to the concession option. Some of us appear not to know how weak our country is, we have never fought war with another nation, even the bakassi issue with cameroun we chickened out. Corruption has eaten deep into all sectors of our country even in our military might, it will amaze you that even Togo would have acqyuired more ammunitions than us, it is when a war breaks out you see Nigeria doing fire brigade approach. Are we sure they utilize the budget meant for national security accordingly or few persons are using it to enrich themselves. Can you remember when David Mark gave the USA 7 days ultimatum to reverse calling us a terrorost nation, i laughed when i heard it on tv. Remember what Nigeria did to south africa not too long ago? Power is it in the international community. When you are powerful you break rules. Nations play game like politicians. What sovereignty makes equal, power makes unequal. It cannot be changed right from the period of state of nature where might is right according to thomas hobbes.
