http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/01/10/contrite-nigerian-don-recants-claims-on-hivaids/ The controversy trailing the alleged discovery of a herbal medicine capable of curing the dreaded HIV/AIDS by Nigerian academic, Prof. Isaiah Ibeh, Dean, School of Basic Medical Science of University of Benin (UNIBEN), took a twist Thursday, following the recanting of the claim by the professor. And yet again, HIV/AIDS has unanimously defeated its challenger in demeaning fashion!! Hip! Hip!! Hip!!! Hurray!!!! 4 Likes |

Now, If the UNIBEN have supported his claims outrightly as some people suggest, wouldn't they have gotten their fingers burnt and embarrassed as an academic institution? Thinks the Prof is 'greedy' here, (1st) for not followiing the protocol & besides making claims of a cure for the dreaded disease . |

The alarming rate of deceit in the country coupled with the impunity from prosecution makes this unsubstaciated claims a cowrie spinning venture playing on the naivity, gullibility and desparation of persons living with HIV/AID to enrich themselves. It all started with dr. Abalaka the surgeon, then Jacob Abdulahi the lab scientist and now this.......... |

what a shame to the Nigerian system where a professor would be involved in such unprofessional conduct. This is how most of our so called university dons claim to have conducted research of immense benefit but to end up in abstract theoretical confusion of plagiarism with misunderstanding of concept. DECEITFUL JOKERS!!! |

Two wrongs do not make a right. Our attitude of antagonism, accusations and counter accussations will never lead us anywhere. Granted that the professor has made some mistakes. This does not mean we have to throw the baby out with the bath water. The University while querying d proffessor for proffessional misconduct should have encouraged him to present his claim for verification instead of completely disassociating themselves from him. Geinuses do not often times behave normal. Who knows he might have made a medical breakthrough that could take the name of d university and the country higher and help millions of people living with the virus. We should stop underestimating d capability of our own people. The proffessor might have been too excited at the success of his discovery and couldn't wait longer to burst it out. We all have our weaknesses. God bless Nigeria! 40 Likes |

There's more to this than we read/hear in the news. Or isn't it weird that similar things happen whenever someone appears to be making headway in AIDS research? 3 Likes |

The HIV virus is distinct from natural occurring and evolving viruses from the fact that since it's discovery only 2 strains have been discovered. The Virus is synthetic in origin. Read this: https://www.nairaland.com/1158458/origin-aids-operation-mk-naomi |

this is a simple case of our nigerian press blowing things out proportion.. if i say we are on the verge of discovery something, it doesnt mean it has been discovered but base on experience and research so far, we might witness a breakthrough, simple. is their any publication to his claim? none, so you cant hold him to anything. is it wrong to announce you are making progress in certain resarch? we hear about harvard profs sayin they are on verge of developing this and that or working to see a possiblity of something and no one quries them for misconduct. if you read magzine you would know. you wont be charged for any acedenic misconduct unless u official submit it for publication... most people just misinterpreted the prof. 3 Likes |

Not surprising at all. I knew such a recant was in the offing - it shows the respected prof still has some credibility after all. As I remarked in the previous thread, his earlier claim that he had found a cure was outlandishly premature, that is if we assume the agent in question did indeed have some activity against the virus. |

This reminds me of Dr Abalaka in the 90s who was frustrated by the IBB regime over his alleged cure for HIV/AIDS, dude had to run to Zimbabwe whr he was sponsored by the Zimbabwean govt to work on his cure, IBB just placed a nice threatening call and our nice Dr was deported to Nigeria and his travelling documents seized. Right now I hear he's into ice block business in abuja. Moral of the story is - the cure for hiv/aids will only come out when the powerful west wants it to come out. Next time prof should do things in the proper way sha 3 Likes 1 Share |

Oga ooooooo.. Nigerians are we moving forward or backward? Hatred and enviousness will never take us anywhere. I'm damm sure, that man must have actually discovered the cure to the pandemic disease but who cares? In a country where hatred, enviousness, bitterness and individual researchers are not attuned to making decisions or discoveries on their own,the pace of scientific inventions, medical research discoveries integration and development/improvement of human's health system would be slowed down if not completely defeated. Re: UNIBEN Professor Recants HIV/AIDS Cure Discovery by AZeD1(m): 5:47am On Jan 11, 2013 |
If funny how so many think you can just wake up and produce a drug. No wonder so many fake medicine in Nigeria... For the uninformed... Medical research usually follows the following procedures when a "new cure" is found. 1) It is first tested on animals.(there is a thread here on Nairaland about blind mice regaining there sight. There researchers have not claimed to have found a cure for blindness) 2)After you test on animals, you report your findings 3)Conduct more research 4)Apply to relevant authorities to perform clinical trials. At this stage, you get human volunteers who are willing to test the new drugs. Stage 4 is very important because this is where you get to decide the efficacy of the new drug. You check for side effects and other sorts of things like whether the new drug gives total cure or just suppresses the illness. Clinical trial can take years to finish. There is no point in releasing a drug that cures aids while giving the patient cancer. The uniben prof did not do clinical trials so how does he know the drug works? 6 Likes |
