See What I Brought Upon Myself! by Gboliwe: 1:53pm On Jan 11, 2013
Just want to share with you all, so we become wiser in our dealings.

In late September 2012, I got a job away from my usual route in town. In a place I cannot remember visiting until then. One of the days prior to my getting busy in the office, I decided to walk around and get acquainted with the environment.

I walked all by myself for about 15mts away from my office and found a motherless babies home. I was intrigued and told myself I needed to check them out. I am that kind of person who has a thing for the helpless in the society. They could be orphans or motherless or aged or handicapped, or anything, just be helpless, and I am all for you. My problem has always been how to accommodate as much as they come, but God has always been faithful and has used me immensely to make something out of the people I come across. But that’s not my story today.

I got to this home and decided to make enquires if there was a way I could volunteer my time in teaching the children, I asked to see the sister in charge and I was given a seat, I waited for about 5- 7mts and she wasn’t in sight and decided to look around while waiting, just beside the reception, outside, towards the main building, I see this very young less than 18yr old heavily pregnant girl sitting down with a long morose face, I asked why she was there by herself and she started crying. She told me she was hungry and that the sister refused to give her lunch. I felt so much for her that I forgot that all I had was N230.00 and that I would need N70 to get back home, I gave her N200 to go and buy food since she said she could get outside. I was happy. I even gave her my phone number and told her she could call me anytime.

I didn’t see the sister and I left promising the front desk “nurse” I would come back again.

This is where my story begins.

This event happened on a Tuesday, by Friday the girl calls me and she was crying seriously. I asked her what was wrong again, she said she hadn’t eaten since the day and that the sister said there was no food. I was so moved, but I was very busy at the office. I asked her if she could come out of the home that I was just at the next bustop, she said she could, so I directed her to my office and when she came, I gave her N500.

She left, by Tuesday next week, she comes to the office without calling me, I had with me N300 that day and I gave her N100, by Friday of that same week, she comes and this time, she comes with another pregnant girl. I wasn’t in the office and unfortunately or fortunately, I left my phone in my bag and went to the bank, I was greatly delayed at the bank so when I came back, my colleague told me that two pregnant girls came to see me, I checked my phone and saw 11missed calls. I even thought there was a problem much more than the hunger and made to return the call but my colleagues assured me the girls were fine that they said they were passing by and decided to check on me, so I relaxed.

Another day, this girl comes again without informing me and also in the company of another pregnant girl, I was pissed and raised my voice at her. I accept I was a bit harsh as I even asked her if she thinks I keep pregnant girls. I asked her never to come to the office again and that I didn’t know why she even came with her friend. I was really pissed that day. Summary of it is that she didn’t come again.

Sometime in November, I went to the home to see the sister again and casually asked after the girl, they told me she had given birth just the week before and left. No problem. I told myself I would call her when I recharged to congratulate her. It wasn’t long, early December, I was in the office one good day when I was told a sister wanted to see me, I came downstairs to see a sister and two girls and one said I was the one they were looking for. I was surprised. The sister asked me for the address of my relative (the girl in her home who gave birth), I told her I don’t know what she was saying and she said that the girl told them I was the father’s younger sister and that the girl came to the home and stole N82,000 and some clothes and shoes belonging to the caregivers and the home. I was stupefied! They insisted I must provide the girl or tell them how to get to her village. All the ‘I swear to God’ I am innocent fell on deaf ears as the sister threatened police arrest on me. The receptionist claimed I have been to the home twice to visit her, the other girl said she has escorted her to the office to see me, it was strong evidence.

It took the grace of God to exonerate myself from this case and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. All this happened because I wanted to be of help. I don’t think it would stop me from giving help but it is a big eyeopener.

Wow... Thats one bad of experience. Thank God that it didnt land you into a bigger trouble. My advice to you is that, next time you are helping some1 you dont know much about, try and get 2/3 people that you will explain things to, sort of witnesses. So that when case like this comes up, they will be there for you.

You welcome my brother... Keep up the good work of helping the poor cos it makes one happy and at peace with himself.
Dont know if you are a catholic, but am a member of St Vincent the Paul, so no work of charity is foriegn to me. Am not surprise at what happened to you cos in my society, we are told to expect the worst just for helping some1 in need.

I am not catholic. Charity isnt an exclusive christian or catholic culture though, the moslems are bound too.

Lol. Everyday is an experience. When I get to be grey haired, I shall have had lots of experiences. The good, the bad and the ugly. Unlike you who is superhuman, I am human and open to risks. I learn from it all.
