Fulaman198: I thought that Djibril Cissé was Fula ethnically, correct me if I'm wrong. Some names in that region are also oddly fulani names (Cissé or Sissay). That said, I didn't realize that Touré was a Mande name. My late and great hero Ali Farka Touré was Songhai (related to Zarma and Djerma) Mali's former president was also named Touré. This is a very interesting thread.

Cisse a fula name this is new to me...
but Djibril is effectively a CIV malinke, Cisse can be either Malinke or i think Soninke, and Toure is also a mandingue, but now plenty of Gur speaking groups such as the Senoufo and related groups share the Toure patronym as well.

Ok, interesting the thing is Songhai isn't a Gur language and yet there are Songhai with the name Touré (or Ture/Tureh). There are even Nigerians with the name of Ture/Tureh but they are Zarma as there are no Mande speaking people in Nigeria.

I just am unsure what to tell people when they see the name Touré/Ture/Tureh since the name seems to have many ethnic groups that share it.

There were surely interactions between mandingues and other groups, maybe the fulas with the name Toure for example have some mande origins? I don't know, but it's a possibility...

Dununba dancers from Guinea during tabaski

The “Dununba” is the dance of the strong men, for the Malinke people of the Hamanah region of Guinea. There are 30 or so rhythms in the dununba family.

Ethnically she is Fulani as Sangare is a Fulani name. From my understanding, Wasulu people are ethnically Fula but have adopted a Mande language. She can also speak Fulfulde language (Fulani language)

The name Sangare is of fulani origin but today many mandingues bear it, same as Diakite. Wassulu area en-globed Bambarra, Malinke and Fulani, and a lot of mixing happened so generally, Wassulu people of today are mostly mixed, they are not totally ethnically fulani.

These two names , Cisse and Toure are widely spread in West Africa. Sybellah wrote earlier in this thread that Kolo and Yaya Toure were not malinke as I thought they were... In Senegal, many Wolof and Toucouleurs have these names as well

Her music is a melodious mix of Mande and Fulani sonorities. She sings mainly in Bambara but has a few songs where she mixes both languages. She surely is proud of her Fulani roots. smiley

I agree altough I believe Bambara and malinke to be the same. Sangare is a fulani name and you find the variants Sankara and Sankhare as well. Oumou looks Malinke, Wasulu people gotta be a mix
