Africa World Cup Qualifying Format: Is It Right? by shadrach77: 2:27am On Feb 20, 2013 |
i stumbled upon the African World cup qualifying format. Here is it below 2014 World Cup qualifying Five African nations will qualfy for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. There will be three rounds of qualifying. The first round sees 24 teams trying to make it into the second round of competition, where there will be ten groups of four teams. In the third round, the ten group winners play off over two legs to determine who will travel to Brazil. The first legs will be played between 11-15 October 2013, while the second and decisive legs will take place on 15-19 November 2013. it doesn't sound right to me. The wrong teams might end up qualifying for the world cup. I think the first two to top the second round group should be grouped into five groups of four each and the winner of each group goes to the world cup. This i feel would be more intensive and would bring out the best team in the continent other than the play off thing. What are your thoughts ? |

I think the current format is fair enough. it will prevent player burnout in an already congested international calendar. Who knows, the top ranked African teams will be paired with the lower ranked ones. |

Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal have players scatter over the world, good coaches can make them proud, Egypt are technically sound to qualify, the fifth team is none of my business |

Why can't the team that won 2013 AFCON get automatic qualification? Then the other teams can slug it out for the remaining 4 spots? *awoof tins* 1 Like |

i agree with op that the present qualifying format may produce weak ambassadors but what he is suggesting will still produce the same result.a tough qualifying format should at least toughen up our reps.all the south american qualifiers made it to the second round in south africa why?because they have a 10 team league style qualifying format.imagine if africa adopts a 10 or 12 team league style qualifying format.imagine nigeria playing ghana, cote d'ivoire, zambia, mali, egypt, algeria, morocco,b faso, tunisia, bafana, cameroon just to qualify for a world cup,by the time super eagles get to the world cup, their concentration, quality of bench, quality of coaching crew, patrotism and unity of team would have passed thru fire and ready to spank teams like greece and north korea even with 9 men.africa seems to have reached the glass ceiling in the world cup because the mental toughness a tough qualifying process will give them is just not there, gyan could not tuck in a penalty, senegal just could not believe they should beat turkey, nigeria lost to 10-man italy even when we were one goal up.iron sharpeneth iron.the teams that participate in this league style format will make more money because every match is a sell out, then with 5 spots up for grabs every match will be important till the very last second of the last match.we all know that getting africans to do what is good for africa has never been easy 3 Likes |

I thought carrying the nations cup automatically qualifies us to the world cup. |
