HNosegbe: It's okay as long as two conditions are met.

1. It's not made compulsory.

2. The workers are paid overtime.

Do you expect the government to pay senior staff members overtime too?

Mad Cow: LAGOS
is indeed working!!! grin

But I think this should only apply to Muslim workers who take off
virtually the whole Friday because they have to go to the Mosque..
So let them have Fridays off and work on Saturday instead!
U VE GOT A POINT THERE

romanlaw: Chai!! If its GEJ that made this announcement!! Omo hell will let loose, ACN abi APC ati LAi Mohammed will go mad. BUT because ITS OUR DEAR FASHOLA THAT COVERS ALL OUR LOOTING.....ITS OK BY US. cHAI!!

Hell will be let loose if it was GEJ becos GEJ doesnt do things based on needs. He does them on Knee Jerk Reaction. This is simply based on needs. for example, LASTMA impounds your car on friday after offices hv closed. Wld u rather wait till Monday to sort it out or sort it out on saturday? Same goes for land matters as people need service in those crtical areas at weekends.

I guess this is worse than giving the civil servants a 2 week christmas holiday

What a negative effect on Adventists and other christians who, in following the bible, take Saturday as the holy day of worship and rest. Additional/longer hours of work at the xpense of our faith in the Creator of the entire universe will not necessarily increase productivity and success as good moral values and God-fearing attitudes will do.
May God help our help our nation as well as its leaders in all its decision-making processes.

Not every staff in those ministries will work on Saturday, it is only concerned professionals and they will pay them overtime.
Mind you some will still shout when they see disparity in their salaries.

Don't mind the illitrates
koruji: Who said they are minimum wage workers or that they will not get paid for the extra hours.
Don't almost everybody else already work on Saturdays in Lagos.
Besides, it is a pilot scheme at this point.

@ tatosh,

It seems NL's is constantly being populated with pea-sized brains pps.
tatosh:
What is this you're saying? It is people like you that will later complain that the government is spending too much on recurrent expenditure.
Do you know how much it will cost the government if they go ahead to employ new staff for this purpose?
What will be left for capital expenditure?
Next time think well before you spew bro

Re: Lagos Civil Servants To Work On Saturdays- Fashola by mapet: 2:29pm On Feb 27, 2013
It will be made compulsory if the nature of their work demands it. They may not necessarily be paid over-time, especially if they are senior officers. In the private sector, senior officers only get stipends like transport and meal allowances when they work weekends(I stand to be corrected); in most cases it's only the clerks, drivers, cleaners etc that gets over-time.

Was there ever complaints when the government officials gets monstrous allowances in estacodes, out-of-station allowance....and myrads even some jokingly posited "dog-allowance".....

But if some people care to rationalize this better, the purpose for these people working on weekends if for you and I that work in the private sector, that will not have time during the week to traverse thru 4hrs traffic from IV to Alausa to process documents and stuffs.......
HNosegbe: It's okay as long as two conditions are met.

2. The workers are paid overtime.

I totally concur with him cos the last time i went to the Drivers License Center at Ikeja on a Monday, the staff that came to office early came around 9.45am. This will cover fro their lateness to work. Those saying that it should be for Muslims that take Fridays up for their Jumat prayers, what do you have to say to Christians who take up about 1 - 2hrs daily for fellowship in all government parastatals?

Shows that this is a very productive and expanding economy so this expanded service delivery hours is no surprise.

The way things are going, I see some special services staying open 24/7.

0lumide: Laye laye!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is slavery!!!!!!!!!!

The 5 days a week should already be reduced to 4 for Family folks.. Now this?

Fashola is losing it on some fronts though.. 6 days a week and just 1 day to your self because of 18k/month minimum wage? Hahahahaha Fashola u goof on this one..
No! Even, does it matter if they work fullday both Saturdays and Sundays, after all they are going to be rendering important services, wont they be paid? They are never being overstretched. Gov Fashola's policies are never too harsh. All affected workers should simply "shape up or shape out"!
Re: Lagos Civil Servants To Work On Saturdays- Fashola by Nobody: 7:20pm On Feb 27, 2013
If not dat d white men trained us on some tnz in d colonial era, i wouldnt trust Nigerian rulers to institute weekend leave, maternity, sick leave, ; payment of overtime, residence of govt workers @ GRA; allowances. Even the pension payment is no longer sponsored by d govt, d civil servant have to save for his pension(d govt withdraws it frm d salary now).
Nonsense. All d ppl saying saturday job is good have not been put thru such. Employing odas would av been beta

While we agree there is a need, other solutions can be employed to address it. He could have hired more workers so they can work in shifts and operate 24/7. Some families only have 'family' time on Saturdays so extra pay might not necessarily suffice. Working 6 days a week is likely to burn out d workers. I wouldn't be surprised if they start frustrating people who come for their services.

Remember in Nigeria, it's per month not per hour. So what will be the pay for that Saturday for a minimum wage earner? 150? Is that even enough for transport to work?

Let's be honest, this won't work unless the incentives are really high.

And you think they can not work the extra pay into their monthly paychecks because its not per hour?

Am startin to get tired of dis fashola guy. He wan turn lagos to califonia overnite?? To me,quite right he's doing a lot but wat he now does is more of panelbeating or should I say 'makin up ' or false packaging of lagos when core issues are still begging to get attended to. Just like he said nurses should start putting on Behind uniforms with lagos state colors when d same hospitals lack beds...nd other facilities. Who dey decieve who....??

those jobless has no experience to do the job and training them to work 5 hrs on Saturday na waste of resources. J

Sometimes having a job is way more than financial gains. It boost morals and it creates diverse buoyancy in the system, especially among the long time unemployed and the hopeless. Irrespective of the hours.

It gives them a foothold to believe in themselves and a platform to strive more.

And don't forget that in the process of training the rookies, you are creating more jobs for the trainers, and going by the unfortunate wages they pay workers, the resources they will spend are peanuts compare to what traitors like tinubu pilfers from the system everyday.

Why not Sunday? Work saturday to disrupt traders?

What is a civil service contribution to the life of Lagosians?

What do dey produce apart from harass poor traders trying to make ends meet?

Civil service job should be minimal in my opinion

Small government is quintessential, Fashola learn.
