Wrong move.

Piracy is a bigger menace to Nollywood than "poor funding".

Of what use is it if higher-budget movies are produced, only for (Al)Aba boys to pocket half the profits?

Exactly! What Nollywood needs is the political will to fight copyright piracy. Criminalize it, and squash it! Give the fight the same zeal that Dora gave to fake drug business in Nigeria.

Our leaders have an annoying habit of throwing money at problems, and assuming they'll sort themselves out.

If we go by the govt's line of thinking, why don't we keep pumping money into PHCN and our rotting refineries as opposed to privatization?

Nollywood deserves strong support from the Nigerian government. Afterall, Nollywood tell Nigeria and Nigerians story told in far away corners of this planet. President GEJ should close down some Nigerian embassies in some useless countries and use the money to fund Nollywood well.

No foreigner i know has ever told me they went to some Nigerian embassy information center to get any useful information about Nigeria. But some will now tell you that they are frustrated with the constant way western media put down Africa and Nigeria, that Nigeria is a developing country with developing infrastructure. How did they know that without visiting Nigeria? NOLLYWOOD!

Nollywood is Nigeria's answer to the bad character hanging over every Nigerian by CNN and other racist western media groups. Nigeria should fund Nollywood not just because it creates jobs and allow Nigerians to tell their own stories, but Nollywood is Nigeria's greatest ambassador. My trip to Saint Lucia, close to South America in 2008, i was stunned when my host handed me a couple of Omotola and Pete Edochie movies! His wife he said loved Nigerian films!

Nobody in the world receives nor believe our useless government owned radios, NTAi or even AIT. But Nollywood have powerfully represented Nigeria. They just have to improve the quality of their movies and reduce the witches thing. We know witches aren't flying all over the streets of Nigeria as some of the unfortunate movies attempt to portray.Government should set up special ministry to help Nollywood develop their potential into a world class movie industry.

Akwa Ibom State governor Akpabio said I am the chairman of the newest forum in the arena of politics, the PDP Governors’ Forum. The first set of disciples of the president.

We felt we must come together and rally support for the president, especially for his uncommon transformation agenda.

Sycophancy at its best.

@Warri Pikin: If Nollywood becomes primarily a govt-funded enterprise; it wil be no different from the 'despised' NTA. People will regard Nollywood as a propaganda tool of the govt.

Like some other posters said, piracy is a bigger threat than low funding.

Exactly.
The only thing that truely succeeds in Nigeria is one with minimal government, particularly the Federal Government, involvement.

PointB:

Well articulated.

The folks usually quick to condemn well targeted government policy are those who wish to see the president fail, to satisfy their preconceived notion. They are the 'retardeen choir' a bunch of hopeless no-gooders

Well said. But come to think of it, can I trust this president or this country that something reasonable will come out of this?

What about the previous monies that were released in the past. that's actually the question we should not run away from
Re: FG Sets-up N3bn Fund For Nollywood by jagabanban: 7:47am On Mar 05, 2013
PointB: Nollywood is one of the biggest industry in Nigeria, and of course Nigeria biggest cultural export. Any support rendered to them can only be seen as wastage by the 'retardeen choir' and allied bigoted crew because they lack the objectivity and foresight to know better.

Kudo to the FG for this initiative for the second time running.

I disagree with your first point that Nollywood is one of the biggest industries in Nigeria. What is the 'monetary value' of Nollywood that makes it one of the biggest. In my view, its probably in the 25th percentile of industries in terms of value. However, one cant deny the fact that it is currently Nigeria's biggest cultural export. I currently work with some Kenyans on a project and you need to hear how highly they speak of Nigerian movies and the wide acceptance in their country. They are usually surprised when I tell them of how little we value tham here. As Jesus said, "a prophet is without honour in his own country". I hope thay put the fund to good use sha, and avoid the usual controversies that has trailed similar funds.

Blah, blah,blah
There's really nothing wrong setting up a "fund" for nollywood that is if nollywood is now the de facto priority at hand. But nollywood is not!!!

The 3bn is it on loan facility basis or ....?
Is there data to show what nollywood has been earning over time to justify the need for such funding?
Is this the best channel to spend 3bn naira?

Was there an impact assessment to show that the fund would improve the quality of products to be produced?

Did nollywood ask for this funds?

These questions and more pertinent in any business endeavour or is it just a way to waste money?

Lastly the name nollywood itself is an albatross to the industry its fake and is a pirated name- see?

This a complete wastage because in the last 5 years, to me there has been nothing worth sponsoring in them all. All they engage in now is pure comedy and porn movies with no moral dignity as Africans. Well, working on my own movie and soon...Gbam! grin

So, kenyans told u dey appreciate naija movies and u opened ur mouth to devalue dem in dier presence. *smh*
And we are here complaining that white people paint us black without us knowing that what is eating the beans is even inside beans.
Anyway, my problem with fed govt involvement in nollywood is dat i dont want nollywood to be a fed govt affair. I dont want govt induced federal xter/quota system and nepotism to enter it OR a case where a minister/president will use a nollywood role to settle a concubine, etc.

I would prefer significant funds allocated to education, healthcare, and technology.

the first lady's mission is also a good project- it will provide jobs and women empowerment without compromising culture and values.

kenyans are diplomatic [due to much interaction with whites and other non-blacks].

dont assume you need to pat yourself on the back just because some kenyans said they admire nollywood.

they hold themselves to much higher standards [relatively speaking] than us and are more exposed. Dont be fooled.

Haba, its probably just rumour but if its actually true then he is making no sense. Why cant these people just wise up and fight corruptions in naija? 3bn on movies industry when the masses are crying of hungers, jobs, electricity, good roads, water and rests of basic amenities. Naija with her suffering and smiling things.
